Offical: Porous Block Problem Thread
#102
I may be buying a 2009 Cobalt SS TC from a GM dealer. Then I read this thread and got concerned. I will be checking it out at the end of the week. It has a little more than 40K miles, no factory warranty remaining. I checked and the car has a build date of 10-27-2008. I doubt there will be any way for me to tell if this engine is affected. I know the dealer changed the oil, so everything is all clean right now.
I suppose the dealer may be able to offer an GM extended warranty. If you were buying a 2009 with a 2008 build date, would you buy a GM extended warranty (assuming it was available)?

40k still leaves some time to fill i think......still a possibility it has a porous block. no way of telling though, kinda shitty. i must have been lucky, mine has almost 99k on stock block and ive beaten the **** out of it since 33k lol. however i am having a coolant issue now.........lol. block test and compression are good though, i have an idea but i dont wanna talk about it haha.

Hope this applies to 36,2XX as well.
Zero lost coolant so far, so we shall see.
Nice to have all this knowledge available , but it sucks that it is yet one more thing for me to watch out for/worry about !

I have 2 months of the factory powertrain left, and did buy a GM extended warranty, so hopefully IF this issue is present it rears it head within the next year or so.

that's what happened to mine.
i suggest switching your DIC to coolant temp. watch temps as you drive. i noticed mine climbing one day and pulled over when it hit 110C. didn't wait for the overtemp light/alarm to come on because by then it's too late..
then again i needed a new motor regardless.

I did some checking. The car I am looking at is no longer covered by the bumper to bumper warranty. So I'm pretty sure the GM dealer will not be able to offer any kind of extended warranty. I'm not sure I would have taken it - depending on the cost.
So here is what I see ... 2009 Cobalt SS ... build date of 10-27-2008 ... 40K miles = rolling the dice. Simple as that. I guess it's probably OK. Worst case scenario - a new short block from ZZP.

Pass until you find a 2010.

I am looking into buying an 09 TC with 130k km's off a lease return. What i get from this thread is that as long as it has an 09 build date I should be free and clear of this problem. Correct?

I had my 2010 checked at the dealer for any recalls or issues. They said GM knows the VIN ranges for the porous block issue and I was well outside of that range of course. Call a dealer with the VIN.

WTF how hard can it be to find the same build date? I do not see it on my driver side door... It is not on the tire specs tag and there is NO sticker on my door underneath the door the front part of my door. wtff

can't you just pop your VIN into this and it'll display the build date?
