Pulling the trigger on an 09 Sedan
Hi guys, I am very interested in an 09 Sedan SS. It has an 11/08 build date, 68k miles and what looks to be 2 prior owners and clean carfax. It is at a dealership and they are asking 12k. I have a few questions that might help me to make the best decision.
1. I have read the porous block thread thoroughly and it really seems to be hard to make heads or tails of if there is any particular "tell" for what cars might be affected. I really CANNOT afford a 2k+ repair on this if I buy this car, so help me with anything I can do to verify whether or not it will go.
2. My wife doesn't like the Cobalt because her stepdad (now passed on) used to sell Chevys and put it into her head that they don't have the build quality of a foreign car. I don't really care about cheap looking plastics, but are the electronics, HVAC and other creature comforts reliable?
3. I am a reasonably competent mechanic and have done much of the maintenance on my own cars over the years. Brakes, oil, filters no problem and I have done clutches, axles and (with my brother) the head gasket and lifters on a 98 M3. Is the LNF SS decent to work on for the home mechanic?
4. The car is an 09 model but was not sold new until 14 months (Jan 2010) or so after it's 11/17/08 delivery to the dealership. As it came with a 5yr/100k powertrain warranty would I still have a few months on the powertrain warranty? Do you think that the long wait to be sold would have affected it negatively?
5.Obviously 12k isn't a kings ransom but I would need to get financed on the car, do you think 10.5k would be a pretty reasonable offer? They have had it more than 2 months now.
Thanks,
Matt

1.most happen at lower miles and there aren't any signs its about to go its either leaking internally or not check thru the couple of threads on here about build dates
2. 103k miles on mine and no major mechanical issues and the electronics have never failed me.lots have had issues with the blower motor for the hvac but it not all that expensive or hard to fix. For me It always seems to be piddly little crap that goes wrong like the trim ring on the sunroof button not staying in place or the damn rear view mirror not staying screwed tight.
3. There's nothing too special here im probably in about the boat as you and ive been able to get everything done ive needed to. Search this forum and google there are how to threads in just about everything you will need to do.
4. You should have warranty left and that time shouldnt be an issue seems pretty common
5. I would expect to pay around that 12k if the car is clean your area may differ greatly though so I would definitely start at 10.5.
If you can post up a link to the car

It looks like a great deal! I love my sedan! There are Lemon laws from dealerships which give you some protection from a car being messed up or having hidden damage. Also 12k with maybe a dealership warranty would be well worth it. Some throw in free car washes and oil changes. Good luck!

I got a sedan with 95k miles with everything but the RPD (which is a gimmick in my book) and love it. But, mine had a new motor put into it from the factory at 93k and I picked the car up (which was very clean and a commuter car) for 9,500. I live in Oklahoma and that was a hell of a deal for anywhere close to here. Good luck man you will love the car if you get it.

Wow, that looks in great shape. I have 72k on my sedan which includes around 2k of fairly abusive track miles. I haven't had any real problems with the car but like LNFTX said, the blower motors fail, but are easy to replace.
Once you buy it, come joing the SS/TC Sedan registry: 474 Cobalt SS Sedan Registry
