cold start/funky sound..
so ive had my car in twice now for this cold start noise. they replaced a couple of parts, cam phasors but i forgot the invoice on what they replaced at my work on my desk.
the NOISE is still there on cold starts!!!!! IDK what to do!
a good friend of mine works at the dealership and he hasnt worked on my car but he did take it to lunch and found out the front control arms needed to be replaced (he noticed a slight clunk)and he got them replaced under warranty. so after a week of the dealership having the car,i finally picked it back up yesterday but this morning i go to fire her up and the noise is still there!!!!
so i called my buddy (who works at the dealership) and told him the noise is still there. he said they will replace the timing chain next... WHAT THE EFFFFFFFFF DO I DO? be a picky ass customer or on of 'those' customers??
the noise is more annoying than anything. i dont think it is hurting anything but idk that.
here is the other thread i was talking with a couple others who had the same issue

Sounds like a quick moving dry grinding noise right? Mine does it every now and then. There is a TSB for it. Check this thread... https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/08-1...art-up-267514/
Edit: just noticed you linked the same thread. Haha. My bad...

Look guys, the best that I can come up with in theory about this issue(cause Ive been trying to figure it out after about 10mo of owning the car, it started) is that the chain tensioner is somehow loosing its pressure and allowing slack in the chain to develop while the car sits for more than a few hours. Then when you start it the chain slaps a bit on the chaing guide while the slack is taken out. I believe that is the sound that we are hearing for that first second at startup, the chain slapping the guide cause it was a little slack.
My only issue with this theory is that Ive had my tensioner replaced twice already LOL

lol^^
my buddy who works at the dealer said that if the sound is still there, they will start with replacing the timing chain and tensioner.
of course i have a video and you can hear the noise but now my damn phone wont let me upload the video onto my computer.

Here you go! Told you the tensioner was the cause. Took mine apart this weekend because my chain guide snapped. I suspected that the tensioner was loosing pressure thus releasing its hold on the chain, allowing it to go slack. Then, once you start the car the chain slack moves to the intake side where it slaps up against the chain guide there. In my case it caused a failure.
The seal in the tensioner was the culprit! It had come apart and was allowing the oil to seep passed. This caused the hydraulic pressure to lessen. Anyways, I replaced the o-ring with a slightly thicker more robust version I found in an o-ring seal kit, metric not standard. Pics!:
Carnage:
Tensioner apart:
Seal broken:
What it looks like almost put back together. See how the seal is supposed to keep the oil IN the tensioner? That whole assembly sits inside right at the edge of the tensioner keeping the oil in so the piston stays snug up against the chain(guide):
After I replaced the seal and installed the new guide and set timing and put all that **** back together...LOL...she hasntONCE done that sound again. And she has sat overnight without issue, whereas before she'd be off for an hour or two and Id get that noise. Just sharing my experience. I have two other tensioners that I took apart and checked, both the same....seal torn. Why does it keep happening to me? I have no freaking idea but I hope this new o-ring holds up. Also, it still could be the chain or some other cause for you guys, but this seems the most likely.

No problem man. Were all here to help eachother out. I hope it doesnt happen again either. So far so good. Why my particular engine is killing the seals on these last three tensioners is beyond me.
