Grind in 2nd gear
I was coming up to a light where I was going to make a left turn with car in neutral and the clutch pressed in when I shifted into second at about 10 mph and try to accelerate out of the turn there was this grinding noise coming from the engine and I couldn't accelerate over 1500 rpm. I was going uphill at this point with traffic behind me and the car would not accelerate. So I tried shifting into third to make it up to a road where I could turn in and stop the car. The same thing happened where I heard a grinding noise and couldn't go over 1500 rpm. So I stopped the car for a few minutes and left it in neutral. I then shifted into reverse and got back on the road. First gear started out fine and so did second. When I got to third gear it seemed ok. So I drove around from light to light to make sure that the problem didn't reoccur. I did not encounter the problem again. Any ideas on what happened? I don't think I accidently downshifted into fourth at that turn or anything and this is the first time this has happened to me. I have a '06 SS/SC with only 3500 miles on it.

well first of all 2nd gear is too high for only 10mph.. you should have been in first gear going that slow..you really shouldnt drop below 2000rpm in 2nd..not sure but reading your post I got the impression that you shifted in the middle of a turn and thats something you should never do, rule of thumb is you should always have power to the ground into a turn, never go neutral into a turn, you should shift into either 1st or 2nd gear before you begin to follow through with a turn..

I was in gear before I turned but when I accelerated that is when the grinding occurred. Do you think I was in too high of a gear for that speed? I was under the impression that you should never downshift into first unless you are at a dead stop or roll.

Yes, 1500 rpms is too low for 2nd gear, depends on the car, but the cobalt is geared well enough to downshift into first when taking a slow turn like the one you took, if you wish to stay in 2nd gear then take the turn at no slower than 20mph, depending on road conditions..

your second gear syncro is going, it will only get worse, the more you dring it the worse it gets, itll get to a point where youll have no second gear at all. I alreayd went though this.
Hope you can get your tranny replaced.
The only way out of this is a new tranny.

Hopefully it will be covered by warranty. I don't drive this car aggresively because its my daily driver so if the dealership gives me crap about driver abuse I will be pissed. Do you think that they will have to replace the whole tranny if there is a problem? Or can they just replace the second gear syncro?
