oil pan replacement
Hi, my brother drove his cobalt LT off the road the other night in thick fog and managed to crack his oil pan with very minor impact. Are these aluminum? He barely hit the dang thing.
Does anyone know where I can purchase a new pan? I'm guessing with all the modifications you guys do around here to suspension that they're a pretty hot item. The stealership wants $160 just for the part. I'm guessing some after market company ya'll love and worship sells this item for much less?
Does anyone make a steel/aluminum hybrid or all steel engine oil pan for these cars?
Thank you for all your help. He delivers pizza and the sooner we can get his car back on the road the sooner he can have some cash flow again.

Your best bet would be the dealership or do like D4 mentions above. An after market pan will probably be more expensive. That is the type of part that if some one was to make one it would probably be for performance more than just replacement. (e. deeper pan, more volume for oil, bigger oil pump and sump.)

Yes they're aluminum. You'll probably just have to bite the bullet and get a new one from the dealer; I'm not aware of any aftermarket ones and if there were, they'd be deep sump racing pans for big money.

here ya go, 97 dollars on gmpartsdirect
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/catalog/frameset.cfm
that link may not bring you to the product. just put in the year, make & model, and it will bring you to the catalog. in the Search field put in "oil pan" and it will come up.

Thank you guys so much for the help. I appreciate you offering time and assistance especially D4! You guys are so helpful. A lot better than my car of choice forum (euro snobs <sigh>).
The GM direct part is about half the cost! Only problem now is I don't have the part # and they list three oil pans. Do all the motors use the same pan? Their unofficial catalog suggests this but doesn't have any part #'s to back it up. They're all listed as working but I was reading the 2.4 uses different pan from the 2.2 and 2.0. I could use some help on this one.
The dealership was nice enough to give me the part # for what I need. It is part # 12601240 quoted directly from the parts guy.
Does this pan have a gasket like most? I was reading it doesn't.

I ran PN 12601240 in my GM database and couldn't find it listed. Here are the oil pan part numbers my GM database shows for the Cobalt engines:
2.2 Oil Pan PN 12578193 (05-08)
2.4 Oil Pan PN 12578193 (06-08) Shows same as 2.2
2.0 Oil Pan PN 55558816 (05-07)
The factory service manual says to use GM sealant PN 12378521 and lay a 3.5mm bead around the perimeter of the oil pan and oil suction port opening.
2.2 Oil Pan PN 12578193 (05-08)
2.4 Oil Pan PN 12578193 (06-08) Shows same as 2.2
2.0 Oil Pan PN 55558816 (05-07)

Cobalter LS,
I looked up 12601240 part # and it brought up the oil pan for me on gmpartsdirect.com. I hope I ordered the right one! This # came directly from the dealership parts guy. Hopefully he wasn't screwing with me! The fact that it came up on gmpartsdirect under that number is encouraging to me though.
If all three pans are the same, I just spent an extra $13 on nothing other than a part # difference. The website gmpartsdirect.com listed all three pans for the 2.2 also though. I should have just bought the $87 pan! Oh well no biggie. I searched your numbers and the pan came up too. God if that dealership gave me the wrong pan/pan#... grrr. Hopefully I'll be suprised by a new new STEEL pan when it gets here!!! Hah, I can always dream can't I?

I believe the motor mount must be unhooked. It probably only needs to be supported since its a lower, not an upper mount. Typically motors are balanced on the upper mounts and the lower is just for forward/backward forces, for lack of a better term. Will let you know after I finish.

just the bolts...but some of the bolts are a royal PITA. theres a couple that are directly above the sub frame, so theres no way to get a socket wrench in there....i dont remember how i got it off...i think i had to jack the engine up a little. It was abut half a year ago now, but it didnt involve removal of anything else that i can recall.
removing your fender wells helps a lot too, or just un-bolt some of the bolts and peel it back
