Blown turbo, upgrade help

Alright so i was driving down the highway and next thing i know my cobalt has no pressure and is making a very loud winding noise (louder than typical) and my acceleration is just horrible. I open it up on to find metal shavings in the tubing going to the intercooler and the turbo is blown. So i would like to turn this tragic incident into a new upgrade. My first question is will my engine still be okay with those metal shavings being in the oil? I had to drive it to a shop about 30 minutes away and i'm not sure if there is a high chance that those shavings got into the engine and what do i need to do to get them out. Second question is i would like to get a bigger turno so what are some great suggestions for upgrades from the stock turbo. I don't want to spend more than 3,000 and i found a shop that can install it for around 500 give or take.

Any pics of the actual turbo? Shaft play at all?

Upgrade turbos, zfrs, s252, s256, s259, 20g, a precision set up. All can be had for under 3k and will be fun choices. All depends on what you want out of the car.

There is shaft play, i don't have any pictures but. Know the turbo is blown. I just want to know if my engine will be okay. I've been reading that the intercooler kind of acts like a filter and stops the majority of those metal shavings. Is this true? Can you also flush out all those shavings so you don't have to worry about them harming the engine

Some will Say outdated some will say it works. But what I've seen 20g do well but the other turbos are more "updated" I'm getting the ko4r till I can just do a 4.05 tranny/big turbo in 1 shot hoping the end of summer mabe winter but the ko4r should keep me happy till then. But efr is probably 90% of the votes around here. Some say trans killer, some say get a fking tune and learn to drive. Lolz.

its pretty unlikely the metal shavings made it through the intercooler, take off all pipes and intercooler and check, and clean. if they are in the lower cp, then they could have made it into the motor. if so, if ur lucky, they went though and out the exhaust without damaging ur cylinder wall. if they did, if u can scratch the side of the wall and ur finger nail catches the scratch, may wanna get that fixed. may loose some compression and be burning some oil. I had that on cylinder 1, didn't really notice anything except for oil pressure was a tad down, but my metal went though the oil galleys since it came from the cam and went though the oil pump and everywhere else the oil passages lead.

Metal shavings didn't make it to the motor. We cleaned and pressurized the intercooler to check for leaks and everything is solid. I decided to go with the zfr 6758 turbo because thats what most people say is one of the best. It should be in by wednesday and ready to go.
