Factory Airbox Mod

Until some restrictions are addressed in the factory air box (the next going into the turbo) the factory box will always have less power then an air intake setup. I've been looking at replacing the factory tubing with silcon piping (even ordered some up), if you could replace the factory piping up the factory breather hose assly, the air box would perform just as good as any CAI or SRI, as most performance is not in going to a "round filter" (though going to a filter that has more surface area does help) but the gains are also getting rid of the restriction in the factory piping.

I'm guessing just as material and it's remedied by going to something like K&N, right?

Tonight I was able to get the air box snorkel off through the headlight opening, but it was a challenge. Remove the headlight & cradle, then remove the snorkel bolt you can see.
I had to remove the stock air box to see the other push pin fastener head. I was able to pry it out with a long screwdriver.
I don't have the silicone coupler to put the belled snout back on, but it's still going to get more cold air than hot until I am able to complete it.
A 3.25" ID coupler looks like it'll be a snug fit. The snout on the airbox measured a strong 3 3/8".
I wish I had a way to measure the LTFT now... a Dashdaq may be in my future.
Once I complete the mod I'll have Trifecta look at the tune again with the K&N drop in I'm running.
Edit... My snout didn't have the tapered wedge like the OP's pics show to hold it in place into the air box, it had a foam ring.

Just thought I'd share some info: the AEM coupler is available seperately from the kit for 160.00 at summit racing part number is 5-6821. No BS I ordered it myself, installed it tonight and not only does the turbo sound happier the car even before complete relearn is pulling noticeably harder. Not bad for something that's cheaper than an SRI that the car doesn't like anyway.

Are talking about the coupler between the airbox and the turbo?
If it was the coupler between the box and the turbo, how long did it take you to change it. Was it easy to do?

Good find on the part number. I'll see if we can get them cheaper. I should be able to find out on Monday.
This is the combo we are running on our 12.1 @ 114 car, so I'd say it works well.

I had Summit price it all out about 2 months ago (installed end of May I think) after looking at the AEM kit and emailing to see if they would sell the coupler separate (when I saw it would attach to the stock box). They told me to contact Summit Racing, after a weeks worth of calls, finally got it in the system as special order. Worked nicely. I also found a hose manufacturer that sold the 3.25" silcon hose for the ZZP mode, cost was 14.00 or something like that w/ the clamp.
You didnt get the 2-929 w/ it btw? Its the nipple for the Cobalt SS, the main reason I wanted that pipe.
For Matt...AEM told me the only place to get sub pieces was through Summit. Maybe you can work something out if your a vendor, but it was the only place they responded back that could order individual items out of a kit.

I'm definitely interested in the silicone piece from the turbo to the air box. Would it come with proper connector(s) for hoses? how much is this going to be from zzp? Ive ordered a few things from you guys already

No..separate part (atleast when I ordered it was). I'm sure you could figure something out to make it work. I'm not sure what others are using (not many have this), but for me the entire point of doing this was to get a better flow w/ the stock box, and not worry about the fitting on the intake tube. AEM has had it for what 9months now? It works perfectly, and snaps right in. Disappointing it has taken the other manufactures so long to fab this part correctly.

Sounds about right...Ran me just over 200 for everything. Going to get dyno'd hopefully if time schedule allows on Friday to see the difference in numbers. On previous dyno, the car flat lined @ 5k rpms w/ stock box and filter w/ tune.

Don't bother with the overpriced nipple from AEM, Dorman Fuel line part # 800-155 works perfect and can be ordered from any local parts place, it has the correct fittings on both ends of the line to work with our breather hoses ( you just cut it to the length that you desire), sorry about the late reply but I'm just coming back off of my honeymoon.

So is most of the gain from installing the turbo to airbox coupler or from putting in a high flow filter and removing the fenderwell restriction.
I already have a K&N filter.
I'm wondering how much more HP a K&N filter with fender restriction removed is over stock.
I have ordered the stage kit so learn down will be gone soon.

Alright I have removed my snorkel and have the K&N filter.
I don't have the new piece from the turbo to the air box, but here are my observations at this point.
You can really hear the turbo and sucking better with the snorkel off.
Also, the IAT1 on the highway is generally only 2 degrees higher than ambient so really you don't get much help with the added piece into the fenderwell.
I am not going to add the stack to mine. I don't think it's worth the money at all.
With that being said, my intake temps when sitting still are a couple degrees higher, but my intercooler will handle that issue and intake temps drop quick when moving.
