Crazy that last time I was in Canada about 8 years ago and the exchange rate was like $1.30 U.S. To $1.00 Canadian. A pack of marlboros in Vancouver was like $9.00 when at home they were under $5.

What you saw was not even remotely an exchange rate thing;
You saw (what I often complain about) the lack in buying power in Canada versus the USA;
If I recall what I was told, the last time the Canadian dollar was above par a discernible amount, was the late sixties or early seventies.
In the recent past our dollars were at or just off of par.

In general Canadians are taxed more, and see virtually everything costing more.

Your example of cigarettes is especially flawed because of all the additional taxes they are subject to - There is a reason why Canadians buy cigarettes state-side (and are limited in how much they can bring over the border).

I couldn't believe things cost as much as they did. The hotel we stayed at for the convention was cheaper if you paid in Canadian money but I don't know about exchange rates over the years. I'm guessing the government health care takes a lot of money, and I would expect ours to also do the same whenever obamacare gets in full swing. Sucks that you have limited companies up there to buy parts from, but at least you do have Powell race shop. I will be sending more money to him soon.

For those interested,

Previous E30 stock turbo setup - 360/380, 34lbs MAF and 28lbs VE -23psi, 21° up top

K04R - 381/394, 39lbs MAF and 32.5lbs VE - 24psi, same timing

20-25 mid range gains, 30-50+ from 5300-6500

As soon as I can get time to throw the car on a 'real dyno' I'll report back.
