are these cars THAT bad on gas?...
ok help me out here... I just started my first "Real" job out of my studies and I have to commute now. I did 2 interviews so far and worked monday and tuesday and I'm trying to wrap my head around the gas consumption
...now I do take a toll route, only because the money is worth not having to dip 10km south and sit on the most bullshit highway in Canada (401), I justify this because I think I'll use less gas cruising at 130Km/hr and getting there in 30min than sitting in stop go for 2 hours for whats almost the same distance.. also, this toll route (407ETR) is pretty much always wide open and never packed so my sanity & time is worth something.
But I'm getting like.. 7-10ishL/100km on average on the highway(CC set) and then of course variable mileage once I get off for the last 7km to my house and work, being light on the throttle.
I calculated I'll be spending around $20 on gas round trip to my job, this is a 73Km trip... like pretty much burning just under 1/4Tank round trip.
Does this sound right? my old 2.4 was very good on gas, I know this is a performance engine but... yikes for a 4 banger should I be looking at something wrong with the engine? or are they just bad on gas.
...this is why I'll never buy a v8 lol I was pricing out a VOLT and I can pretty well get one for just a tick more than I'm paying for my cobalt, now the Volt will be much longer to pay off and I sincerely love my Cobalt but I'm a little freaked at this mileage.
mods are.. K&N intake

I have no idea what you just said I dont speak Canadian numbers but
With 103k miles I can still get 30 mpg as long as its at around 65mph with cruise control anything over that gone. In town I usually see around 22mpg

7 L/100 km is 34 mpg (US gallons) and 10 L/100 km is 24 mpg. OP, that's a wide range. I used to get about 22-23 mpg in the city and 33-35 mpg hwy. If you are getting 7 L/100 km on they hwy and 10 L/100 km off the hwy, that's very good. You will be hard pressed to find a car that gets better mileage on the hwy going 130 km/h, hybrids included (maybe a few mpg better). If you are getting 10 L/100 km on the highway, that is bad.
Compacts nowadays are supposed to get mid 20's mpg in the city and mid to high 30's mpg on the hwy, assuming no hypermiling so even a new 40 mpg compact wouldn't save you a whole lot.

Don't drive 130... that's whats eating your fuel. that's revving close to 3000rpm. bump down to about 113-116 and you will get over 80 more km to your tank.. so basically you would get one more day out of your tank just from dropping your speed and getting there about 5 minutes later.

It will get good gas mileage if you stay out of boost. I live in burlington and for the past year drove to the other side of tdot every day for work along the Gardner. It was taking me 45 minutes to travel 8km since the started the construction. Still got 400-450 km on a tank. Now work in Mississauga and get around 550-600 to a tank.
Don't forget when you are in boost your gas mileage is basically cut in half or more. Doesn't take much fun time to kill you r gas mileage.

The only time you'll get 30 is if you're steady-state cruising on the highway. Any kind of stop and go will lower the numbers.
I got 25mpg over the last 2000 miles, about 60% city 40% highway and I drive like an *******, lol.

100% highway driving the best I could get out of mine was 7.4 L/100km (~31.8 mpg). That was with cruise control set on 110km/h and a relatively flat highway.
City driving I average around 11 - 12 L/100km (19.6 - 21.3 mpg). That involves all stop and go traffic with some big hills.

130kmh will not be cheaper on gas than say 100kmh. faster u go the more gas ur using, slow it down and ull do better. but around 30mpg seems right. I know when I went to the states when I was pretty much stock I did average of 38mpg. a lot of times I was at 40+.

I find 110 kph is a good cruising speed for getting decent mileage. It's the city driving that screws the mileage with all the stops and starts. Driving to get good mileage sucks, slow accel and low boost ain't fun, but visiting the gas station frequently sucks too.

7l/100km is like 33mpg how much better could you ask for? It's the best of both worlds performance when you want it, efficiency when you need it. Ask an Evo owner what they get for gas mileage.

I've started commuting for school and have been getting 32-33mpg with probably 80% highway.
That's driving at about 101-105ishkm/h. (oversized tires)
Screen shows anywhere from 7-8L/100kms when cruising and have got my trip estimation over 600kms
BUt only ever get like 520kms in about 44L.
The local Subi guys are getting an average of 13L/100km
