Timing Chain Retiming

Hey Folks! I need your help, I did retiming my timing chain. I put back everything in order and follow color key that it's pointed to. Then I turn my engine when it's not running but just to turn it few times and it come back 1 tooth skip ahead. Exhaust, intake, and pistons all 3 skip 1 tooth. Is that normal ? Or it could be timing chain is stretch ?

I did this exactly when I did retiming but skip 1 tooth after I turn over my engine few times.

FWAK! I forgot to rotate 45 degrees exhaust camshaft to clock my timing! That's why it skipped 1 tooth ahead.

yep. triple check your alignment and rotate the motor around until they go back 100% in time. sometimes they will be 1 tooth off in either direction but it should eventually line back up.

I did 4 turns and it still ended up 1 tooth jump. I'm gonna realign timing and rotate 45 degrees on exhaust camshaft tomorrow. See what happens, I'll update tomorrow afternoon.

make sure you put the tensioner in and release it before you rotate the engine and use the j tool to hold the cam gears in place to torque bolts

How do I release the tensioner ? I did put new 1 in but tap it but it will not release it. I kept banging the **** out of it and still will not release. So, I had to put old 1 back in that is already released and put it back in.

I usually release it before I put it in the car however if you do not install it right you will break the tensioner. With that said. If you rotated it without a set tensioner your timing will be off as well like Mr b said

You need to find a tool that fits down there and hit the little rod with one swift hard hit. That releases it. The issue is getting something down there that leaves you with enough room to hit it. I usually release them before I put them in on the cobalts.

I talked with Chevrolet mechanics and he said that I just put in the tensioner then tensioner will set inside the engine. He said that tensioner has a small hole where oil goes in tensioner then it'll set. Does that sound right ?

It could be bad battery, ignite switch, or relearn.
