Oil Changes

Has anyone yet tried to find the oil filter themselves...without a manual? It has to be the most awkward set up I have ever seen. Doing it myself would definately beena challenge seeing as how it took the guys at the local garage 20 minutes to locate it? Under the supercharger...on TOP!!! of the motor. Crazy. That is the ONLY thing I have to say wrong with this car so far. Everything else great...this....foolish!
Anyone agree?

I just changed my oil and filter last weekend on my SS/SC. Ive been reading how hard it is and blah blah blah. Well it took me about 2 minutes to change it. Not as hard as it looks.
1. locate the filter housing cap (black under the throttle body).
2. Unplug the map sensor to gain access.
3. Using a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, 12 inch extension and a 32 mm socket you can move a few hoses and lines out of the way and get right on it.
4. unscrew the cover.
5. set the ratchet and extension aside, reach under the supercharger with your right hand and lift the cover and filter out (use a rag to catch any dripping oil)
6. change the filter element
7. reinstall the filter and housing back on the engine and HAND start it.
8. Use the socket to retighten it (not too tight).
9. replug in the map sensor connector.
10. Add 6 1/2 quarts mobile 1
11. Enjoy

I'm gonna change my oil either tomorrow or next weekend but anyways I went to Wal-Mart and bought a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 for $18.00 and then bought 2 1qt bottles for $3.96. Every auto parts store I went into wanted between $7.00-$8.00/qt for Mobil 1 and for a case of 6 was $31.00. to Wal-Mart for having cheap prices on oil. As far as the oil filter I've only seen 2 kinds.... Purolator and Fram. The purolator is like $4.00 at Wal-Mart and the Fram oil filter is $7.00. Just wondering what everyone else has been using who changes their own oil

my dealer wanted 5 bucks for the acdelco filter. it looked better built than the fram.

why are you putting 6+ quarts in? the owners and service manual both say the oil capacity is 5 quarts. (going to change mine for the first time soon, might answer my own question)

costco has 6 packs of mobil 1 5w30 for around 23-24 bucks.

has anyone tried the mobil 1 0w30? says its supposed to give a bit better mileage than the 5w30, and it still meets the same gm standard 4718 that i've only seen 5w30 synthetics meet.

Hell, I need 10w30 for my car, due to the consistant 110-115F temps here during the summer.

from what other members have said who have changed their oil they have said they used 6.5qts. Anyone who has changed their oil did you jack the car up because i couldn't see driving our car up on those ramps . our cars seem a little too low to the ground for it?

12) Drain out 1.5 quarts of oil.

The engine takes 5 quarts of oil, not 6.5.

If you're that strapped for cash, I guess you have no choice. Synthetic must be really expensive in Canada. Around here, especially if you get the 5qt jug of Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart the difference in price between that and regular old oil is only a few dollars at most.

Synthetic is actually CHEAPER to use. It lasts two to three times as long as cheap regular oil. The revised newer Mobile 1 claims 15,000 miles. Alot of people don't get that. Sure, you pay more for it, but you don't have to change it nearly as often. It saves you the time of extra changes AND is cheaper.

Unofficial How To.. Oil Change

Actually if you look in the manual it states 5.0qts WITH the oil filter!

I just changed my oil yesterday and was the very first time I have ever done an oil change on a car and I must say was the easiest thing to do. 30-45min job. Part of this was from chevytech329 but I'm gonna add to it because there is some stuff missing for it to be an actual how to....

ITEMS NEEDED TO CHANGE OIL:
1. Ratchet
2. 15mm Socket
3. 32mm Socket
4. 12in Extension for Ratchet
5. Jack
6. 2 Jack Stands
7. Oil Filter (I used a FRAM.. part number CH9018)
8. 6qts of Mobil 1 Oil (Get at Wal-Mart. 5qt jug for 18 bucks and 1 qts are 3.89)
9. Some rags if you make a mess

UNOFFICIAL HOW TO CHANGE YOUR OIL ON YOUR 2.0L SUPERCHARGED SS (people without supercharger the directions would be the same except you won't have to deal with the SC in the way):

1. Jack up the front end of your car. I put the jack in the middle (front) of the car. (Make sure you put something behind the rear tires and I also put the e-brake on).
2. Once car is jacked up I used 2 jack stands and placed 1 on each side of the car on the frame. You can't miss it. The frame rails run parallel with the tires.
3. Get a 15mm socket and ratchet. Get your oil pan.
4. Get under the car and locate the oil drain plug. It's towards the back of the oil pan.
5. Use the 15mm socket and ratchet to loosen the oil plug, BE CAREFUL if you unscrew it all the way, the oil really shoots out!
6. Once oil is drained put the oil plug back in, get the jack and jack up the car so you can take the jack stands out and then lower the car so you can easily work in the engine bay to get at the oil filter.
7. Locate the filter housing cap (black under the throttle body).
8. Unplug the map sensor to gain access.
9. Using a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, 12 inch extension and a 32 mm socket you can move a few hoses and lines out of the way and get right on it.
10. Unscrew the cover.
11. Set the ratchet and extension aside, reach under the supercharger with your right hand and lift the cover and filter out (use a rag to catch any dripping oil)
12. Change the filter element by pulling it off the cap and the new filter snaps into place on the cap.
13. Reinstall the filter and housing back on the engine and HAND start it.
14. Use the socket to retighten it (not too tight).
15. Plug in the map sensor connector.
16. You might want to add 6qts of Mobil 1 Oil. The manual states 5.0qts WITH the filter. The old oil I had drained out from the car I put back into the empty Mobil 1 containers I had. It filled 1 5qt jug to the top and about a half to 3/4 of a 1qt bottle.

GOOD LUCK!! It's actually really easy!!

put a universal joint in your socket, extension setup to get the filter cap off, and you don't really need to move any hoses. just come at it at an angle from the side.

The only thing I don't like coming in at an angle is you could possibly strip the nut part on the cover, it is plastic.

I just use a 1/2 drive socket with a 3/8 adapter all I have to do is unplug the sensor.

actually the oil pan holds 6.5 quarts of oil. If no one believes me call up your local dealership and ask them. Or just simply read your owners manual a little more carefully and you'll see it's 6.5, not 5 like the one guy said. If you'd like your motor to seize from lack of lubrication go ahead and use 5 quarts, but me personally I'm stickin to what it says, not what i hear from people on a forum

Well I feel like an idiot. I just spent $60+ plus on oil, 1/2 drive 10 inch extension, mobil 1 5w30 oil, and the 32mm socket....I changed my oil and proceeded to log down the info in my extended warranty manual (along w/ the receipts) when I noticed a check-book looking manual tucked in one of the pockets. Low and behold it's full of free oil changes at the dealer and other service vouchers for getting extended warranty...I didn't know whether to be happy, or pissed at the moment lol.

Proper oil fill????

Well after reading the owners manual, checking at work (i work at a chevy dealer) using
dealerworld and changing my own oil (been changing oil for 20+ years)...

I can tell you my car held 6.5 quarts.

was not quite sure at first (from reading what people on here wrote).. so I started
with 5 quarts (after a full oil change with the oil draining for 30 minutes), then started
adding oil 1/2 quart at a time untill the level was on the full mark.

Yup, 6.5 quarts just like it says. After driving it for 10 miles and let it sit over night
I rechecked it cold. Right on the full line.

HUmmmmm

Guess the manual was right.

gee imagine that.

Is it just me or are a majority of people who own this car handicaped or something. If your gonna come on here and spit out facts like you know what your talking about you might wanna research before you run your mouth. The GM mechanics that post on here and a very few select people on these forums seem to know what they are talking about. That's my .02 as well

I put 6.5qts in when I did my oil change. So anyone else wants to put 5qts in and bust their engine go ahead like TheExorcist said. Car runs amazingly smooth with 6.5qts in it. Don't forget that oil filter needs to soak up with oil too!!!

I used 1 1/4 on mine...I'm pretty sure they all use the same socket, but I'm not 100% on that.
