The two overhead camshafts, which actuate the intake and exhaust valves via roller cam followers mounted on needle bearings, are driven by a space-saving, durable 8-mm wide simplex roller chain instead of a relatively wide, toothed belt. This assembly is designed to be maintenance free.

Crankshaft
The Ecotec features a cast nodular iron crankshaft with eight balance weights. The number five counterweight also serves as the reluctor wheel for the ignition sensor, ensuring accurate ignition timing for the life of the engine.

Intake Manifold
The intake manifold is a scroll design with tuned intake passages for good power and torque in a compact design.

Connecting Rods
Durable, accurately forged powder metal connecting rods for all pistons reduce machining waste and help optimize engine smoothness.

Twin Balance Shafts
Twin balance shafts provide quiet engine operation and smoother performance. These shafts, located in the cylinder block, cancel out the shaking forces inherent in an inline 4-cylinder engine, resulting in an engine that is smooth from idle to maximum engine speed.

Direct Accessory Mounts
The alternator, air-conditioning compressor, and power steering pump are directly mounted to the engine for vibration suppression.

2.2L ECOTEC Engine
The 2.2L ECOTEC engine is a twin-cam, 16-valve power plant that produces 145 horsepower and 155 lb.-ft. of torque. Standard on Cobalt Coupe and Sedan models, LS models and LT Sedan.
2.2L ECOTEC engine highlights:
Has undergone some of the toughest and most comprehensive tests ever conducted at GM Powertrain.
The cylinder head and engine block are made of lightweight aluminum.
Noted for its low noise and vibration levels, a result of the engine's rigid structure, counter-rotating balance shafts, structural oil pan and other features.
Designed to be driven for 5 years or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first) before replacing the coolant, for 100,000 miles before changing the spark plugs and, based on driving conditions, without ever changing the automatic transmission fluid (on Cobalt models equipped with this transmission).

Yeah, the L61 Ecotec 2.2 went from 140hp and 150lbs tq to 145hp and 155lbs tq then went to 148hp and 153lbs tq.

The new LAP 2.2, from what I hear, is even higher in hp and less in tq.
If that is the trend, keep robbing tq for hp, it will become a Civic Si, lol.
