In European guise, the engine cranks out 163 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.
All they are doing is bring over an engine from Europe where everybody has diesel engines. When people find out that the engine is a $1,500+ option they wont want it anymore.

This is good... Diesel is a less refined fuel and you would expect it to be cheaper... nope. There are new consequences that come with a diesel car. The emissions are much tougher to deal with and there are different rules as to maintenance. I would hope it to be a positive thing. If there are more diesels, and since there is technically only one grade of diesel, maybe the price of diesel will be driven down since there is a higher demand...
This doesn't always work, obviously. Diesel was almost $5/gal in 2008. Lets say at that time, when gas was $3.99/gal and diesel was about $4.80- you have a diesel that gets about 40 mpg, while a typical gasoline car gets 27 mpg.
You get 6.77 miles per dollar on regular gas.
You get 8.33 miles per dollar on diesel.
What's it worth to you?

True story (In addition to BMW and Merc...pretty much European brands only)...and just a few short months ago when the new TDI golf arrived...they couldn't keep them in stock...and the TDI range of all their vehicles sells extremely well. Hopefully all manufacturers start bringing their European Eco Diesel engines over here.

It seems every time Chrysler brings out a diesel Cherokee or Commander, they sell terribly and they don't do it again.
With the cost of diesel and the increased maintenance cost, people are going to stick with gasoline IMO.

That would make sense was working on a cruze today and had to do some programing it had 8 engine codes to choose from 1.4 LUJ, 1.6 LDE, 1.6 LXT, 1.6 LEV, 1.8 2H0, 1.8 LUW and what might be the diesel 2.0 LLW and last but not least 2.0 LNP SS maybe?

2.0 CDTI Ecotec I4 1956 cc 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) @4000 rpm 350 N·m (258 lb·ft) @1750-2500 rpm
258 ft lbs and it only makes 158 hp
You turbo swap that thing and it's going to be like 250 HP 500 FT LBS
This is what would be needed for an AWD system with all that damn torque ..
interesting....

Tuned it could probably get a solid 180HP / 330TQ... that could be a cruze id drive.. wouldn't be as slow as *****.

The key to the diesel is the torque number. Forget HP. That kind of torque, married to an automatic transmission, would be a sweet driving car. As long as it is reliable, (remember the ill fated GM diesels from the late 70's?) and quiet, North American buyers "may" buy it, but only if the cost of fuel is high enough. But most importantly, North American buyers will not drive a car that sounds like a can of marbles is under the hood.

That's the whole point behind the Cruze. HP is not even in the minds of Chevy for it right now. It's all about MPG. Even the SS won't be all about performance.
But I am very interested in this. Let ZZP get ahold of it, simple mods and a tune. Could make a peppy fun car to drive with monster torque and great MPG
