2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel arrives with 42 mpg for $25,695*
Looks like instead of the 2014 Cruze SS we were hoping for we get the Cruze Turbo-Diesel engine that makes 148 HP and 259 ft-lbs of torque and can make 280 with 'overboost'
Not entirely sure what that means, but what do you guys think?

If it has a decent revband it will move out pretty good! That's quite a bit of torque! Still wondering what the overboost is for! And the city MPGS! But overall not bad! Got to remember you have to have models that get good MPGS so you canhave ones that dont like a cruze SS (hopefully it's coming!) It's called CAFE! corporate average fuel economy!

Cause direct injection turbo diesel... Diesels have alot of compression cause of no spark plugs (glow plugs instead) so high hp/high rev's are not very common! My bros F250 diesel only rev's to like 3-4K (ive only ever seen 3.3-3.5K lol) but makes 700 Ftlbs and like 450 Hp. Banks built 7.3L powerstroke! With just a controller he could allmost double his TQ and gain about 50% in HP but just wanted it safe for towing 5th wheel!

Well thats a 6 speed AUTO figure for highway MPG. a 6 speed Stick will hopefully have better numbers as well you can control shifts/RPM. How many automatic cars have a 40+ MPG figure that are not hybrid..? LOL it stickers more than an ECO cruze but also has more options as i doubt the ECO cruze has leather! Eco is a stick and this is Auto #'s! with a stick diesel you can allways make it better cause you decide the shift points and well it's not all ways pretty on any new car.. Even the Jetta TDI has seen less than 35 MPG depending on driving habit and conditions and even with an auto! I hope this cruze brings better #'s! Remember drivetrain loss with an auto vs stick!

Too bad this car isn't coming out in a stick though, which is swaying a lot of people over to the Jetta TDI.
Strictly talking MPGs, this car isn't worth it when the other cheaper models get very comparable EPA estimates.

I doubt it comes with a manual trans. Its a low volume engine and adding an equally low volume trans means they would probably only make a few hundred a yr. But its expensive to design, certify, and stock all that stuff. Most people aren't will to spend extra for that.
As a positive you know they had to beef up the car to handle the extra torque . Those costs could be spread out over a few more cars if they did make an ss.

See that's why this car is going to sell. People are complaining that it isn't rated at 50 mpg, but it's still rated higher than the Jetta. I have a feeling that we'll see quite a few of these, especially since it's the first domestic to bring a diesel to market in a compact car.

To be honest, I think we'd see more diesel vehicles around here if the lifted and tooned trucks didn't set forth such a negative image. I see them all the time, stacks just rolling coal from every stopsign because the owner thinks it's cool to leave their chip on level 6, or max powa all the time.

What I wanna know is what trifecta and ZZP parts will do to the HP and Torque. It'd be a sleeper car I'm guessing. Think a Cruze TD will smoke a stage 2 GTI or GMPP Stage 2 Cobalt SS/SC?

It's all about the gearing. Diesels can't rev very high, 3-4k, so if they had our transmissions they would only hit 12 or 13 mph in first before redlining. Clearly they will be running different ratios. Since this is an Opel engine, I'm assuming the Opel transmission will come with it because it's already got the gearing set up properly.
