yes, ATF stands for Automatic Transmission Fluid, which as you said you are not an automatic.
Do a search, I asked the same question a while back and you need to use 75w-90 gear oil for a 5 speed and your going to use a little under 2 quarts. and if im not mistaken, the drain for the gear oil is in the drivers side front wheel well somewhere

All transmissions in the 05-08 2.2L and 2.4L Cobalts require Dexron 3. If you go to GM they are now selling Dexron 7. Its reverse compatible. It is the proper fluid for the 5 spd getreg and the auto transmissions. It's 1.7 litres / 1.8 quarts to fill. Stick with what the manufacture reccomends.

Word to the wise i've been down this road before if you change your trans fluid consider your warranty as far as your transmission goes voided, they won't work on it. That was one of the big questions I had to answer when i brought my car in awhile back to get the transmission fixed when i asked him what if i swapped tranny fluids the guy said well then its no longer covered.
o and i brought mine in and the tranny had to be rebuild and it had like 40 problems with it because i had to drive on it because they wouldn't take it in until it was convinent for them

GM service info and the owners manual say for the 07 2.2 and 2.4, manual trans fluid part #88861800 which IS NOT ATF. The 05 & 06 2.2 & 2.4 take dexron 3 ATF. It was changed in 07. The 2.0 for all years takes part #21018899.

its actually called mtf not atf for the manual transmission's and i just put the synthetic mtf that the ss/sc use in my 2.4L cost's a little more but worth it if you ask me.
