Transmission Swap

Hello,
I am planning on doing a transmission swap and I was searching the forums as to what can interchange (directly bolt on) to a Cobalt LS 2006 2.2L manual.

I found this first forum that states that the Cobalt LS transmission can be directly swapped with and F35 Transmissions.

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...5+transmission

The second forum I found though says that the Cobalt LS transmission can only be interchanged with other 2.2L/2.4L models

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...f+transmission

And searching on the forums, I am under the impression that the Cobalt SS/SC and the Cobalt SS/TC all use the F35 transmission but just have different gearing ratios..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F35_%28MU3%29_transmission

So my question is will a LNF or LSJ transmission fit on my Cobalt LS 2.2L ?

I was planning on getting the LNF transmission with a LSD from -

http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...P1907C437.aspx

Thanks-
(I did not know whether to post here or on the transmission forum)

it will physically bolt up to the block. This topic has been covered MANY times.

You'll need a new clutch/flywheel (given they even mate up considering dimensions etc.)

new master cylinder?

TOB

axles
mounts
intermediate shaft?
linkages
shifter
shifter base etc.

More work than it's worth to be honest.

Yea, I knew I was going to need a new master cylinder, clutch, and flywheel.. those were obvious.

I did not realize that I would need a new axle though, that was one thing I did not account for. ><

Can I get any insight from people that went this route?

see that's the problem, no one has gone that route, everyone decides that it's not worth it.

Yea I am just thinking of getting a transmission with an LSD in it, as a standalone LSD insert is almost just as much

why

mvp was able to use a 2.4 block in an LSJ.. he got a custom flywheel made.. but he didn't need too .. everything bolted right up

and there are f35 flywheels that'll work with the 2.2/ 2.4

any update on this? i'm thinking abou tdoing this to a 2.4- upgrade to the tc/ss trans

btw- its not only the lsd- when you upgrade to the turbo trans, you end up with-

bigger axle's, larger wheel bearings, quicker steering ratio, stronger knuckles...... oh and limited slip-

in my book this is a well worth it mod, but of course so many people here will try and discourage those with good ideas-

try it man and let me know how it goes

Well seeing as there is a LS61(LSJ bottom end/L61 head) cavalier with the F23, the key was using the F35 spacer. It will bolt up no problem since the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same across the ecotec line.

so in theory you could use the F35 spacer and be able to keep everything else stock? with the F35 flywheel?
and an L200 clutch?

Yes in theory, I believe the guy running that setup was running an LSJ clutch with the F23 and the spacer helped clear part of the bellhousing since the flywheel/clutch was contacting when he was turing it over. So there might not even be use for the L200 clutch, or spacer it just needs to be mounted and tried. The spacer is there for TOB to pressure plate clearance from what I've read.

He goes by Daflyinskwirl on a couple of different forums but take into account he is using an LSJ block with a F23. Where as your trying a L61 with a F35, for all purposes its possible and will bolt to the engine but there are other parts that would need to be changed.

What I would do is buy an F23 and F35 and start comparing gear ratios and final drives and piece together a tranny. That way you could use the F23 case and not have to switch up so much, if you used a F35 diff you would need a hybrid axle but thats not too hard.
