Unhappy LSJ Bad engine noise - timing chain? or something else...

Ok, my 06 ss/sc...

we were having some fun last night (hit about 130 that was fun) on the highway, all was well.

got off the highway and was just cruising, then noticed some engine noise.

I've only had the car for about a month but im positive i havent quite heard this yet. And im not talking about the fuel system or exhaust, allthough it kind of sounds like the pitter patter the exhaust makes, just louder

Heres how the noise is: You don't rly hear it at idle, not even much when you rev, but once im in gear and moving, its kind of a rattle/ticking that increases with the rpm. almost like a misfire of some sort (no CEL on btw) or lifters.. im scared

The engine seems to be running ok, my gas mileage is still good, and (although im scared to check) the car still accelerates fine.

But its the noise that gets me is this the timing chain tensioner? all the engine noise posts i culd find anything like this lead to this... but the sounds they describe aren't quite matching right up with mine so idk. took a vid while accelerating but my crappy phone couldn't pick up the noise.

Only happens in gear? Transmission problem maybe. Does it go away if you put the clutch in while rolling?

Miles on the car?

well it'll do it a little if u rev it, but im pretty sure its nothing to do with the gears. im at 35k now, its an 06 ss. i'd have to check with the clutch thing but maybe... but its definately when the engine rev is going up, like under acceleration. once im just cruising in gear its not really much noise until i gotta hold speed again.

mmm.. semi sure... like the exhaust isn't rly any louder than it was previously, but yea, the ticking noise DOES sound a little bit like the stock pitter patter it makes, just louder.. idk. the thing was, i was just beating on this car on the highway for a decent while just before i noticed the sound so im worried i F'd something up haha, i better check it for leaks though who knows.

GOOD THING IS, my cars under the powertrain warranty, so i guess im just gonna bring her in there, ill get back to this once i find out what the problemo is

still open for suggestion though (it sucks trying to explain noises while typing lol)

Check your flex pipe. They crack all the time.

Exactly what I was thinking. Hard shifting/driving, especially with the stock mounts, can easily break the flex section of a stock or aftermaket downpipe.

im gonna say cracked flex pipe in the stock d/p or belt tensioner. i never heard of a stock lsj having a bad timing chain anything at 36k.

Careful, I have 22K, timing chain tensioner seized up and the timing guide screw sheared off and I drive my car nice. Now I am paying to replace all the intake valves and possible a new head but that's after trying to change the timing chain tensioner while I read on this site its near impossible to jump timing and it did. I also have an 06 ss/sc.

Yep..... tensioners go in Lsj's alot..... but they are usually worse at idle and go away as it goes up in the rpm. These trannys will make a rattle on deceleration .... both of mine do it and it's more noticeable next to a jersey barrier or something that reflects sound.

I remember reading that people were just taking out the tensioner and screwing the new one in.....while it was still collapsed . I'm suprised that they got away with doing it that way and did jump a tooth . I took the valve cover off and tapped the tensioner so it would set rather than take that chance on my LSJ. Mine went at 18K IIRC.

The new style requires no tapping, and no setting. Nothing.

You must have used the old style tensioner.

Nope.... I used the revised one . The instructions from GM stated it needed to be released and even had Pic's of the new one in GM SI.

The revised one, which is an LNF style one, doesn't have a way to lock it, so there is not a need to release it. If you banged on it, all it did was move a little lol.

The original design was updated a couple times. Now they all use the LNF style hydraulic one that doesn't have that locking spring bullshit in it, just a c-clip that locks the pin in place and oil pressure keeps the chain tight. No setting or breaking or any of that crap.

Ahh... gottch . I had the 2nd revision that had to be set with the valve cover off . I didn't know that they are using the LNF tensioner now . I replaced my LSJ's back in 07 so thats were the difference came from. Thanks for clearing that up!

Yeah, the newer one was sold from '08-up I believe. I bought one when I changed the head on my '06 car, back in later '07 I believe, and it was still the 2pc design. Not the same as the original, different shape to the casing and sealing areas, but still needed to be locked/released. The newer ones I deal with now on the motors i've built have all be LNF style.

Right, Joe is correct.

This is the 2008+ version. The newest one. I am 110% positive of that.

At the time i did it ....in 2007 .... it was a revised tensioner . I haven't had the car for awhile so didn't know they started using the LNF tensioner as of late.

I believe there is only (1) revision. The old one 2005-2007, and the new one 2008-2010.

There was a major design change to the LNF style, but i've seen more than one type of the early tensioners.
