My light comes on every now and then. It never seems to be on when it goes to the stealership so I just ignore it.

I had mine come on everytime i had a passenger, or once in a while on its own. Turned out to be the passenger seat belt tensioner sensor was bad. Anytime the seat belt would be pulled at all it would trigger it. Took it in under warranty and all was solved.

Bulletin No.: 09-09-40-003A

Date: July 26, 2010

Subject: SIR/Airbag Light Illuminated, DTC B0081 and Passenger Presence System (PPS) Code 23 Stored (Replace Passenger Seat Belt Retractor and Re-Route Wire Harness)

Models:
2006-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe
2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe
2006 Pontiac Pursuit Coupe (Canada Only)
2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Coupe Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to update the model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 09-09-40-003 (Section 09 - Restraints).
Condition

Some customers may comment that the SIR light is illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find the following SDM code stored:

DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023

Cause

The wire on the Belt Tension Sensor (BTS), that is part of the retractor assembly, may become open or acquire a ground near the sensor. If the BTS is rotated toward the rear of the vehicle, added stress is applied to the wire bundle that may cause an open or a ground path. The two photos below illustrate the possible effects on the wiring. Each photo indicates the area to investigate at the arrow labeled (1).

^x2 on a problem I was having like this turning out being the seat belt tensioner. It was a shorted wire going to it that is located near where the B pillar meets the floor I'm told. Since it's all one unit, the entire assembly must be replaced.

If you do decide to go to a dealership to have this looked at, please let me know as I want to be available to follow up with you on it.

Same here, whenever I have a passenger and the seat belt is touched it says Service air bag, and the passenger air bag OFF is lit up. Guess I have to take it in.

I recently got my car back from the dealership. My ecm needed to be reflashed since my car was running extremely lean and CEL was on. I started my car this morning and Service Air Bag showed up. I've had it do it before but it went away after a few times of starting my car.

The airbags aren't covered out of warranty? That seems kinda weird to have a safety device not covered.

Yeah, I thought so too. It may have a longer warranty period that other items. I definitely had to pay out of pocket though. It was in the range of $350 for parts+labor if I remember right. I thought about doing it myself, but it's a hazmat item since it's got some explosive in it, so I was like... yeeaaah... not going to DIY this time. lol

Parts are parts. Warranty isn't a safety coverage. It's coverage for manufacturer defects. It's not weird at all. Things wear over time. Sometimes they break sooner than you'd like, but there are a lot of factors that come into play.

BTW, just an FYI, when the Airbag light is on, the airbags are not operational. Keep that in mind when driving the vehicle. Besides the bulletin that has been posted, people should also check the wiring harnesses below both seats to make sure the connectors are properly connected and have a little dielectric grease on them to prevent corrosion and poor connection...

With just a TSB, they still charge you. You need a recall to get free service. Being a safety item, I'm surprised this isn't a recall.
