Hmm that's a new concept. I'm sure it's doable but as banker pretty much said, it's not gonna be as easy as bolting them together

I think someone on here way back built a 2.0 with an lsj head, it took a lot of work. If I recall the 2.4 has a different crank trigger then the 2.2 which turns into a tuning nightmare

I wish he'd be a little more informative as to what is actually seized and why. All he's probably gotta do is tear the engine apart to find out what's wrong and replace. Tearing off the head is super easy, probably just a head gasket

Isn't there a sunfire that was a 2.2 Eco that is running this setup? I'm sure he has posted on here. But to the op search around on here. If not on here then try g m s p o r t c o m p a c t.

Im currently doing a Le61 hybrid build on my cavalier. 2.2 L61 head with 2.4 Le5 Block. L61 is an 03 which should be the same as whats in the cobalt, LE5 is an 07. When it comes to the cavalier. All I need to do is bolt down the 2.2 head to the 2.4 block, using the le5 gasket of course, and run a trigger wheel and bracket for an external crank pos. sensor. I might be able to get you a trigger wheel. Wiring would be the same other then extending the ckp sensor. I recommend you use a le5 intake mani as well. As your low end will suffer using stock valve train and the l61 mani.

2.2 head on a 2.4 block has been done a few times already, so its definitely doable.

I did a 2.0 head on a 2.4 block but its the same thing really, just a few more headaches getting a 2.0 head to work with a J-body.

Its very easy to do and is a great build. Like Newt said has been done a couple time already. Doesn't cost a lot like other people saying it does.

Id love to do it and it was my plan. However i could not get a straight answer on the timing of the motor. I had heard that on guy tried and destroyed his valves with timing issues.

There are a couple build threads on the j body forums on this type of hybrid build. Newt was even kind enough to make a build thread here n explain it as well. You just need to run an external crank trigger wheel w/ a crank sensor. External wheels are widely used on factory production cars and aftermarket cars like LS V8's

the L61 E37 Ecu and the LE5 E37 Ecu use the same crank trigger wheels so for 07+ L61's this wouldnt be an issue.

Yes that's true, but he is doing a Gen I L61 on a Gen II LE5, so different crank triggers I believe.

Yeah found it. His L61 is a 7x reluctor ring and the LE5 is a 58x ring. So he'll need the external crank trigger.

I believe there is a spacing issue if you run the crank sensor in the factory location from your L61 to the LE5.

I remember reading about that on here, ZZP has a spacer they made to fix this issue, they use it on their 2.4 stroker motors, not sure if its for sale by itself tho.

My head is shaved around 0.005", and I clayed my valve clearance, and with my Comp Stage two cams, and no head gasket on the motor when I clayed it, the valves didn't even indent the clay I put on the pistons.

So there is lots of room in there.

Mind you out of all the guys that built a LE5 hybrid on the JBO I think im the only one who didn't have theirs blow up yet....one from an over boost issue, one from a valve snapping off.

No issues on mine yet tho ***Fingers crossed.

Which is why I don't understand why more people are doing these frankinstein builds. The benefits far out way the cost. Its old school hot rodding at its finest. Plus to me it seems very easy and straight forward.

Heck I just read last night one of the j body guys swapped a full lsj in his cavi and got it running n/a for now.

I was told by ZZP that they dont use the gen 2 LE5 block anymore because there is a flaw in the block that makes them very prone to coolant leaks into the oil. The Gen 3 LE5 block fixed this issue but a gen 3 junkyard motor is $1000 or more right now.
