Dammit. I was hoping for some good news. I'm going to guess dropped valve too like already posted.
Only reason I don't think its folded rings is because it would be odd to see that in two cylinders like that. But then again, I'm sure it's happened somewhere before.
This makes me sad.

I'm guessing valve train related since it's 2 paired cylinders.
I've built a bunch of these heads and timed these motors way more times then I can count. Timing was definitely spot on when we put it in the car. I am kinda interested to see what happened but so fed up with the car especially with the whole interior being ruined. You would never guess the car had almost 200 k miles on it if you saw the inside
Ugh maybe all out race car for this thing in the near future. But for now it's probably going to be hihiding under a tarp for the for sea be future

I'd be surprised if it were out of time, when cranking. The backfiring is suspicious though, unless it backfired through the slightly bent valves. Albeit possible, with heads that I've purchased and or fixed, when they bend valves, it's generally on all 8 intake. considering it had pretty good compression on the other 2.
The fact that it backfired is also odd. I'd check to see how the chain looks and go from there.
I assume it's in the head/ timing chain related. I'd bet the bottom end is fine

Didn't touch it yet cause I have another car I'm trying to finish first but yes I'm pulling the valve cover this weekend and pending what I see might do a leakdown. But there is zero pressure built so I have a feeling something is fucked and will probably just pull the head when I have time.
But first things first I'm getting the trans am running

It was definitely timed correctly not exactly rocket science with these motors. Done it many times.
I'm leaning towards the chain maybe jumping.
When it backfired it was more violent then I've heard these things do before. Worse then if your cam sensor is off.

well upon inspection over the weekend seems the exhaust cam is 180 out.
don't know how I fucked that up, but will retime it this weekend and hope for the best.
now comes the fun part of doing this in the car without dropping the chain cause it's gonna be a ***** to pull the front cover with the ati balancer
do have the cam gear holder tool available, but I will probably have to rotate the cam gear also which is going to make this interesting

You can do it pretty easily in the car without the holder. Just have a friend handy. I swapped my cams out just by zip tie-ing the chain to the gears and having a friend hold each one up while keeping tension as I swapped the cams out one at a time. It was pretty simple and only took a half hour or so. I get pretty lazy sometimes lol

lol increased air flow, decreased compression to zero.
hopefully that's all that's up with it and it will be running friday night/saturday morning, then I can get back on the race car for once.
still have a ton of work left to do on this car, nitrous and meth install are the priority, but still have all the cryo2 stuff to wire up and plumb also. pretty much a solid day or so of wiring left to do
then new stereo system goes in (and wait til you see what I have in store for that lol)
figure if I'm gonna daily the car in traffic again, need me some good sounding speakers
