doubled core intercooler.

has anyone put together an 8 laminova core intercooler? take two cases, cut the top just below the blower mounting point off then take a second case and cut everything but the actual cores and supporting metal then weld it inplace in the space on the first IC to create a 8 core ic using nearly stock endplates? just modify the endplates to change the angle of the flared fittings slightly?

single pass is still only 4 cores, someone has to have added cores, right? more = better. if no one has, im going to buy a pair of intercoolers, chop them up, weld them slick as **** and sell it because damn it, someone should.

I always thought the less passes through the intake manifold the better. Stock is 4, many people go dual pass, and some even single. 8 is going in the wrong direction

I think that he means single pass but with 8 cores. I think with that you should be thinking about the restriction in air flow that may pretty much cancel out any gains made with the added cores.

theres more cooling potential for this system, its just gotta be unlocked. im looking for all the time improvements, not meth and there is no e85 where i live. heck, maybe i should just run a second intercooling system with a plate style intercooler under the blower, have the dualpassed ic using a griffin and the plate style going to a FMIC. might be cheaper in the end than cutting the manifold.

I still don't get how you will fit 8 cores where there are only 4 stock. And what kind of set up are you running that you need that much cooling? I have a front mount and my cruising IAT2's are about 20 degrees higher then outside air temp.

For all that work it would be better to cut the whole core system out and replace it with a large bar and plate h/e. Or even better make a full sheetmetal one designed around the bar and plate h/e with intake runners tuned to length for the highway cruise rpm (runner length doesnt really matter in boost but making them tuned to cruise length should increase fuel economy, if you dont care about fuel econ, go ahead and make them as short as possible).

thats really what im curious about, ive seen intercooler setups for bmws made entirely custom using laminova cores because they are so good at what they do. the front side of the intercooler is just empty space, the area directly under the blower, its empty all the way to the bottom where the first laminova core is. should be straight forward to cut open the case and add at least two or three more.

im not sure if its okay to post links? i hope so because this is exactly what im talking about.

M62/S62 900HP Laminova cored aftercooler build. - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum

the link is to a bmw tuner who built an intercooler with 6 laminova cores to replace his upper intake plenum. This sort of thing could be done for a cobalt, our set up has enough room for more cores particularly if your willing to go full custom like this guy.
