Unclear information on block generation.. newer L61
Hey guys,
So I've picked up a low mileage L61.. to my surprise once i got it I saw that it is an 07+ but an L61, since it does not have variable timing BUT has a 58x reluctor and cam position sensor and trigger wheel on cam w/ 4 coil packs. So my question that I cannot get a clear answer on.. and since I have no other ecotecs around to compare it to (I am new to your world!) Is this a GEN II block like an 07 lnf or whatever that supposedly has weaker coolant passages/sleeves or is it a Gen I like an LSJ or normal L61 (that I can resleeve and make stronger)
Is there a place on the block I can look to really tell?
The engine code on the oil filter housing and timing cover i believe was AWT if this helps
Thanks!
Will

Im confused... There was no 07 LNF. and the L61 was the 2.2 ecotec if i recall.. Which did get stronger as the generations went on block wise but not by much.. VVT was on the LE5 IIRC.. With alot of people on here with a nice M62 setup on there 2.2 or even some custom turbo applications that are on stock bottom end why resleeve? The rods are the weakest point in the 2.2's as far as i know... I do some searching.. 07+ is gen II.

GM did make a LNF in 07 just an fyi. It was originally designed for and ran in the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline 07 and up.
As far as the gen II being "weaker" so to say, that I would have to disagree with whoever told you that OP. If you so desired, any gen II block can be resleeved without a problem in the least. The main issues was the lost foam casting process they had used compared to a sand casting (which they went back to for the gen III's). Due to the foam being a more porous casting material, there was a tendency to have coolant loss in some of the earlier castings.

I believe ZZP was one of the sources saying it was weaker. Physically the block looks no different to me than a GEN I or an LSJ, tho id probably have to cut it up or remove a sleeve to see. I think im just going to resleeve this with ductile iron sleeves from a certain forum member. I'm just worried since i see ZZP does not even girdle gen II blocks anymore because of the issues they have

You are correct ZZP does say the Gen 2 block is weaker. They are actually even having a clearance on them with that they have left.
ZZPerformance - Gen 2 LSJ 2.4L Short Block #ZZ-LSJ24SB
"This is a discontinued product we have experienced a high failure rate of the factory coolant passages in the GM Gen 2 blocks. Moving forward, we will only be offering the Gen 1 and Gen 3 blocks. The remaining Gen 2 blocks are being sold at a clearance price with no core charge"
