Lightweight wheel questions....

I got a set of rims for my car 16x7s at 17lbs a piece and I've got bigger tires 225/55/R16

I weight one of my wheels one day when I was rotating them...came out to be 38.3 pounts on the digital scale....so account 17.1 lbs for the rims including balancing strips and 21.2lbs from tires and the 29psi inside....is that a good weight or can you go lighter for tires...?

I know Mugen *....barfs...* makes 15lb 17" rims for 650$ a piece....is there something like that here in america????

Center Line makes forged wheels for about $300 a pop that are also 15 pounds for the 17" version. You'd be better off looking for lighter tires or dropping down to a 16" wheel though.

They don't make them in the SS/SC's bolt pattern though, not sure about the LS...

I got my 4 wheels from Big 0 on sale for 78$ apiece...go to bigotires.com they got some good sales and clearances...and then I got my wheels froma wheel shop here in town thats absolutely the best shop pricewise - $300 for 4 new tires/mount/balance

I wouldn't go magnesium and I'll tell u why...if u blow a tire and it shreds..you grind the rim on the ground...the magnesium risks lighting up and burns at like 3,000 degrees...making it damn near impossible to put out...not to mention your whole car will light up

the LS and LT's are 4x100 bolt patterns making us much more suitable to ricer rims.....

$269 each for 15 pound 17"ers in 4x100.

$212 if you go with the 15" ones, not sure on the weight but they've gotta be crazy light.

Yes magnesium is flammable but the autoignition temperature of magnesium is approximately 883 °F in air. Even if you shred a tire you will never see 800 °F before something else bad happens. and with a 4X100 bolt pattern on the LS you can get these follow linky. 17x7 and 14 lbs.

yeah dude definitely digging on those rims for sure....unfortunately, the $280 price tag for each quite expensive...but good price for forged for sure....

as for 883*F autoignite....yeah you'd never see that for sure in the ambient temp but considering DOT 3 brake fluid breaks down at 570*F+/-...and you have to refill your brake fluid a little bit every couple months...means its exceeding the 570*F temperature...I wouldn't want to be the poor sap with new magnesium rims driving down a mountain riding the brakes....

or heres another tact...ambient temperature in las vegas during our 6 months of summer is 114*F and we're at a higher altitude...means our brake temperatures are going to get higher and stay higher.

But your right it is severely improbably to light up the magnesium wheels.....

Actually the boiling point of DOT 3 varies depending on the manufacturer. There is also 2 boiling points for every hygroscopic brake fluid. The dry boiling point (brand new fresh) and the wet boiling point. Brake fluid absorbs water, that absorption is what lower the effective boiling point of the fluid to the wet boiling point. Wilwood Hi-Temp 570 Degree Racing Brake Fluid is the highest DOT-3 I have found. Typical DOT-3 fluid run around 300 to 400 degrees dry and even less wet but for a typical pass car its more then adequate. As for the 114*F ambient air temperature, think about a braking system for a second. The rotors operational temperature is maybe what 150*F higher than that? I'm afraid that I'm coming across as M Fing know it all but I'm just trying to help.
