View Full Version : '08 Delivery Expected on 5/2/08
TrevMo 04-25-2008, 08:16 PM I have quite a story on getting a new Cobalt SS. After reading that it is possible that GM is no longer taking orders for '08 Cobalts, I had my Dad, who works for GM, call a local dealer to inquire about this. The dealer said that he was unaware that this could be the case, but offered to order me an '09 (since I was planning on waiting to get white). We went ahead and put in the order (and the dealer had all of the options that would be available, including the new performance display).
Later that afternoon, my Dad received an urgent e-mail from someone in his region stating that for the rest of April they would be offering an additional $3,000 off of certain models.
We called the dealer back and asked if he had any '08's on the way and it turns out he had a yellow, black interior, high wing, lsd, sunroof, and 6 disc radio that shipped and is expected to be delivered on May 2.
We were able to purchase this one (he had 3 on order, two are being built next week) and I am ending up getting an amazing deal...not to mention I'll have one of the first few on the road.
The sticker price was $24,700. I'm getting the $3,000 special discount for employees in April, $1,000 bonus cash, $1,500 loyalty cash, and ~$2,000 regular employee discount. When it is all said and done, I'll be getting one of the first '08 Cobalts for approximately a 31% off the sticker (before tax).
Nothing like driving one of the hottest cars off the lot for ~$17,200 when the sticker price is $24,700. I really feel like I fell into a bit of luck with this one!
UPDATE:
Here is the final word on my ordeal. I did end up purchasing this yellow '08 Cobalt and it is still scheduled to be delivered on 5/2. I ended getting the April discounts on Cobalts (the e-mail my Dad received was not quite right). I got $1,500 loyalty cash and $1,000 bonus cash. Tack that on top of the $2,000 employee discount and I'm getting it for $20,200 before tax, title, and license. I'm extremely happy that the dealer was able to report the delivery for 4/30 since I had already purchased the vehicle and they had the invoice for it. Nothing like getting a good discount and getting one of the first '08 SS/TC to hit the streets!
krispy 04-25-2008, 08:27 PM whoa whoa whoa,
3k for employees? (on top of normal employee discount, not sure where this comes from)
$1k bonus cash (don't see that on gmfamilyfirst.com)
get your salesperson to give you the incentive code for these discounts if you can, I would be very interested to see them as I didn't see them in the incentive management system at all

I think that is the understatement of the month. Congrats. :D
GULLABLE0NE 04-25-2008, 08:40 PM you wanted to wait for the 09 ss and an 08 ss falls into your lap in a week and a half lfrom now for 17k? i almost hate you a little bit. j/k congrats

Well, if you notice on the current incentives on gmbuypower.com, it says they were last updated yesterday. The $1,000 and $1,500 figures were straight from the dealer at 4:30 PM CST, so it is possible that they made the decision today for the final few days of the month.
As for the $3,000, it was our understanding that this was in addition to the current incentives (also, this e-mail went out to my Dad at about 4:00 PM CST), but we are slightly skeptical. We won't be able to get things figured out until Monday, but the way the e-mail was sent, this is the way things look.
We are guessing that GM is trying to get some quick sales to finish out the month of April to make sure they are competitive if other auto makers had good months.
I'll keep everyone updated when we get to the dealer on Monday to firm up the details.
GULLABLE0NE 04-25-2008, 08:46 PM if the car dont show till may 2nd wouldnt that sale go for the month of may since you technically cant buy the car till it is delivered? also where can i check all the current offers? the chevy site is so unreliable that i wouldn't go by that, and my salesman gave me the rebates available as of a few weeks ago so i curious what i should be looking at. by the way my expected delivery date for my ss/tc is the first week of may, but ive had an order for it since march 20th
DARK AGE 53 04-25-2008, 08:50 PM stating that for the rest of April they would be offering an additional $3,000 off of certain models.
and is expected to be delivered on May 2.

There's less then a week to go in April, how do you get 3k more off if you don't take delivery until May 2.
I'd check to see if the Cobalt SS/TC is on the list, in fact, it's hard to believe any Cobalt will get the extra 3K off......but if it's true I'm in.
GULLABLE0NE 04-25-2008, 09:00 PM the ss may be excluded. chvy likes to exclude the models they expect to sell that month

The dealer told me that as long as he has the VIN and we have the papers signed, it is purchased in the month of April.
I'm not sure if he is doing us a favor or not because it is someone my Dad has a long standing relationship with.
GULLABLE0NE 04-25-2008, 09:03 PM that daddy factor could be the reason
MikeyMo84 04-25-2008, 09:04 PM Dealers can "RDR" cars before they're delivered as long as they're positive its gona be delivered
RDR is when you report a car sold in the GM System
DARK AGE 53 04-25-2008, 09:06 PM The dealer told me that as long as he has the VIN and we have the papers signed, it is purchased in the month of April.
Can they do that....and if it comes in damaged you'll be stuck with a damaged car.
Cobaltss/TC 04-25-2008, 09:10 PM Can they do that....and if it comes in damaged you'll be stuck with a damaged car.
Yeah as long as they have a vin it is possible. But yeah if it comes damaged that sucks, never seen one come damaged yet.
TrevMo 04-25-2008, 09:10 PM Well, my Dad just talked to one of his sales buddies and he said that the e-mail was probably just worded poorly. He is thinking that it will just be $3,000 total.
Either way, it will still compliment the employee discount nicely!
Billig ss/sc 04-25-2008, 09:11 PM You suck haha. Congrats man. Gotta find some GM employees for a discount now haha

I'm still in if I can get that.:twothumbs
That would have to be on top of my GMS price also.
dperkins1988 04-25-2008, 11:21 PM Yeah you either get the awesome interest rate or the cash discount you dont get both i promise thats how i bought mine 0% interest or i could have got 1500 dollars off UNLESS it says xx% AND xxx amount of dollars then you have yourself a GREAT buy but the odds are highly unlikely on a brand new car that hasnt even been launched yet. Like when the 09s come out then yeah you will find some good deals on 08s if you get the GM discount which I DO! lol but just some info in case anyone was interested! PEACE OUT

Yeah...the way it was originally explained to us, it would all be cash incentives, but there would not be a break on the interest rate. The way it is now, you can either choose 2.9% interest or the bonus cash.
I understand that usually they don't put incentives on brand new products, but there were not any restrictions on which Cobalts when we talked to the dealer yesterday. The thought process is probably to sell whatever they can to boost their April numbers. From GM's perspective, getting one more Cobalt off the lot for an April sale is better than not selling it, even if it is an SS.
slownlow 04-26-2008, 12:05 PM hmmm i get GMS and am considering getting a ss/tc and giving my wife my ss/sc...the 3k as described is probably the 1500 rebate with 1500 loyality cash totalling the 3k. i wonder what GMS will be with upgraded stereo and lsd as the only opitions..............
Super_SS 04-26-2008, 12:08 PM i cant wait till you get it either...i wanna see how *quick* these things are...you go to woodfield at all?
slownlow 04-26-2008, 12:12 PM GMS is 21500 with my opitions, i have a hard time beleiving they will have the 3k rebate on it though 18500 would be awesome

Yeah...those are the types of things that make me think GM is very desperate for a few sales in the final days of April. My Dad has worked for GM for almost 23 years and he said it is the first time he has ever seen rebates on Corvettes!

The 2004's had rebates when the 05 came out . Look around , the rebate and incentives arent coming only from GM . The car/truck market is very poor at the moment and GM is doing what it can to qwickly reduce is stock of cars and trucks .
Enjoy the new SS , your pm box is gonna be full for days with questions :D :D
nice man, can't wait til you get it .. let us know if there is any delay on it or not.. todays the 1st .. 1 more day to go :D:D

As I said earlier...I am out of town and won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow. As of 4:15, it still had not shown up yet...looks like it might be stuck in a rail yard somewhere...unless I hear otherwise, it is looking like Monday...

The other post says they are on hold, not sure how true that is, or if it is just that one car. but you might not be getting it until the problem is sorted out, if there is one.

True, they have at least a week from the scheduled date to deliver your vehicle, it will get there in time, for example we had an HHR SS that was supposed to be in on 4/25 it didn't get there until 5/1.
mcz34man 05-03-2008, 11:44 AM i agree the system can be delayed.....i just dont like when people count the chickens b4 the eggs hatch just my own opinion

Well...it is Monday morning and my Dad got a hold of someone who can track where the car is...IT HASN'T EVEN LEFT OHIO YET! It is waiting to get put on a train. Looks like the expected delivery date is very dependent on train availability. Hopefully it will get on its way today, but then it could still sit for a while in Chicago before a truck gets there to pick it up and deliver it to the dealer.
And as far as me "making excuses" for why my car isn't here...what can I do but state what the expected delivery date and hope that it gets here by then? Looks like it will still be a few days!

I ordered mine the other day and I am hoping to get word back on if GM stop taking ordered on the SS/TC I hope not... The dealership told me last week of may or first week of June but I am in Pennyslvania which is right beside Ohio so it should arrive on time... if not no big deal as long as its not after 3rd week of June
billwit 05-05-2008, 05:37 PM I just got back from the dealer. I handed him a $500 deposit and he said maybe in 5 weeks it could be delivered.
I suppose I'll find out in a few days if the rumor is true that the 2008 SS can't be ordered anymore. Or I'll have a new car in a few weeks. One or the other......

I asked GM is this true and they said:
"Thank you for contacting Chevrolet and your interest in the 2008 Cobalt
SS Turbocharged! We appreciate the time you have taken to contact us.
At this time, the 2008 Cobalt SS Turbocharged is no longer available
for ordering. We apologize for any inconvenience. The 2009 Cobalt SS
Turbocharged is scheduled to begin production on June 23, 2008. Vehicles
generally begin arriving at dealers about 6 to 8 weeks later. Please
keep in mind that production dates are preliminary and subject to
change. The new vehicle sales manager at your preferred Chevrolet
dealership is in the best position to advise when the 2009 Cobalt SS
Turbocharged will be available in your area. If you are not currently working
with a Chevrolet dealership in your area and you would like to locate one,
an easy way to do so is by using the Find a Dealer web tool on"

Maybe something changed in the last week.

I had 3 dealerships tell me they are getting about 3 each in first week of June so I am giving all the dealerships that told me they were forsure getting 3 in by the beginning of June and I am going to go put a nice deposit in cash that they cant turn down so I have one SECURED!!!!!

TrevMo 05-06-2008, 10:11 AM Most recent update:
My Dad had someone call over to the plant to find out what is going on and they said they have been on "stop delivery" for some quality checks. They were thinking that they might start going out today or tomorrow. They have been building them like normal, but have been parking them all in a lot for these checks. Since my delivery date was 5/2 (build date of 4/23) and it still hasn't left the factory, I'd expect some delay for everyone else who is counting down to their delivery date.
You would think that they could have taken these checks into account when they started estimating delivery dates. Also, it would be nice to keep the dealers in the loop since they seem to be left in the dark. My sales guy said he has just been watching for a yellow car on the trucks when they come in. If they kept them in the loop, it wouldn't make people any happier, but at least they would know what is going on with their car!

roadrage06 05-06-2008, 03:35 PM Wow, I didn't realize how rare or hard to get a hold of these things were gonna be. From what I'm gathering I may not get a change to race one in my home town like I hoped. And since I'm so good with my dealer I was also gonna see about getting a test drive for comparo reasons......doesn't look like I'll be able to do that either. If one does show up it'll already be spoken for and won't allow a test drive. I hope I'm wrong. At the least i really want some ignorant kid to tyr and race me in one.
Cobaltss/TC 05-06-2008, 06:59 PM i talk to a guy who works at Lordstown he hasn't said anything about delays or defects, just something i think they like to make up excuses that is, just like airlines make up excuses for delayed planes. Once the car is off the factory floor it is no longer a problem of the factory the parts are considered used and the dealer is to catch and fix those issues, once again like i have said in the past we have had many new vehicles come in all messed up

This is nuts!
Car Mags have tested them ...
Edmunds.com drove one ...
Even that "pro" driver on that video who doesn't even know how to drive street cars anymore raced one ...

They may not be BSing you, but they may not know what is going on. None of the dealers have access to the tracking system that some people on the corporate sales/service have access to. All they have to go by is looking up the expected delivery date in their system. I'd expect this information to be inaccurate, but it is probably the best information the dealer has to give you.
Cobaltss/TC 05-07-2008, 01:25 PM I have been in contact with my normal source, yes there is a defect with some of the turbo cobalts, not sure what it is but hopefully will be finding out tonight, he said they are getting is resolved very quickly and the ones not made yet won't be affected, the cars should go out here shortly. I will keep you updated with my info.

PimpLay2 05-07-2008, 01:39 PM I dont understand the factory is in Ohio right? I am on the border of PA and OH but the SS/TC wont be in my area till 1st or 2nd week of June :(
How long does it usually take the car to be shipped after the dealership gets the inovice 3 weeks?
**This question is to Cinci since he works at a dealership**

Did you talk to someone at the plant about when they might go out or are you going off of a date in the dealer system? According to my dealer, mine should have been here 5/2/08. According to someone my Dad called at the plant, it is still waiting to get on a train.
I'm not blaming dealers for inaccurate information, just trying to warn people that they are at the mercy of the information they receive.

No axle strike delay at all on cobalts. They are getting the spindles from an outside source and have been for over a month.

I ordered mine on 3/13/08 and it got made today, so that tells it takes some time.

I found out that mine was ordered by the dealer on 3/6/08 and was built on 4/23/08. Delivery date was 5/2/08. Hope that helps with some projections...hopefully you guys won't be affected by these quality checks that are holding me back...
krispy 05-07-2008, 02:36 PM well they didn't go into production (at very limited amounts) until early April, so it should take them a while (3-4 weeks) before they start showing up at dealerships
actually, start of production was delayed from the first week of April to the 3rd week, so they have actually only been building them for 2.5 weeks
never quick enough, eh?
Cobaltss/TC 05-07-2008, 08:53 PM So the cobalt ss/tc is on shipping hold but it is nothing important, something to do with the vin codes. So you guys should be happy that they caught this problem and didn't ship your car to the wrong place.

He said i believe this week, for the ones that haven't been made yet or being made this week won't be affected by this i only think there has been 500 production cobalt turbos made, so shouldn't take long to get those cars out since they make 1000 a day.
jkonkle 05-08-2008, 07:55 PM I just called classic in Dallas and they said on or about 5/14 for the three on order - nothing with LSD. Nothing shows up in the gm order system you need to go to their website - two black and a yellow on the inbound.
