View Full Version : Hearst Castle Revisited
DC52NV 05-18-2008, 06:33 AM it was my fiance's and i 5 year anniversary on 5/13 so we decided to go out of town since we love to travel. we decided to to on a day trip to Hearst Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearst_castle) and enjoy the scenery. last time we went was almost 2 years ago and you can see the pics i took then in this thread (http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25472&highlight=hearst+castle). we went on tour 1 the first time so we decided to take tour 2 this time which is the garden tour. here are some exposures i took while on the tour. i couldn't really walk around the place looking for shots to take so i had to work w/ what i had. camera used was my canon 30D and kept switching between 3 lenses. (1) Canon 50mm 1.4 aka "nifty fifty", (2) Canon 10-22mm and (3) Canon 24-105L. let me know what you think and please feel free to give out any constructive criticism on my pics. enjoy.

I've seen your pictures, and haven't been impressed with anything. And, I know for a fact DC didn't use any polarizers or any other filters for that matter, it's called knowing how to use your camera.

chevy cobalt 08 05-18-2008, 03:49 PM dont wanna be a dick and im no photography expert but...your pictures are good but they just dont compare to what i saw in the original post
cause a lot of his shots are with DOF and I don't take many pictures like that every photographer has their strong and weak points in what type of photography they're good at. For example I'm very good with long exposure, but DOF isn't really what i'm best at. where as he can be good at macro, and not long exposure. i'm more of a general picture taking person which means i take of everything rather than just one subject (macro, action, etc) but theres certain things i'm best at taking pics of and things i'm not (like i hate taking portraits of people lol) so really it's not about who takes better pictures it's about who takes better pictures in a particular subject. he's prob got me beat @ macro but i prob got him beat @ long exposure. -> http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs12/i/2006/293/3/7/ghost_at_the_wheel_by_hyperactive122986.jpg ghost anyone?

what kind of camera do you use and where do i learn to take pictures like that?? awesome just awesome
nvm reading>me canon 30d
yeah, i have a canon 30D. there are photography courses you can take or just pick up a camera and learn first hand. don't get discouraged if you don't like what you shoot at first. keep taking pics and you will learn as time goes by.
Wow...these are amazing. :( I WANT A DSLR!!!!!!!!!!

wrong. no filters were used. i never claimed that these pictures were one of a kind originals or that my shooting style is L337. that's like me telling you, 'all you did was slow down your shutter speed.' anyone can do anything you and i can do w/ basic camera knowledge.

cause a lot of his shots are with DOF and I don't take many pictures like that every photographer has their strong and weak points in what type of photography they're good at. i don't do macro photography. i'm not specifically good in any type of shooting. i'm well rounded and can shoot any scenery that is presented to me. i'm not saying it will be the greatest but pretty damn good above average. i agree w/ you that portrait photography is my least favorite but i do it for a living as i own a portrait studio and pays good money.
thanks everyone for your kind comments and constructive criticism. :cssNET:

i'm sure your gf will truly enjoy her photog class. is she doing the B/W film class? those are the classes offered here. my exposures are no work of art to be honest. i've been doing it for over 5 years now and not a day goes by that i don't learn something new every time i click the shutter.
very nice pics...I love the flower pics (no homo!)...the hallway too!
i'm a sucker for flowers. i love shooting them. especially right after it rains in the early morning. sometimes i'll just cheat and take a spray bottle and mist the flowers before i shoot to give them the same effect. ;)
As it has been said....nice camera
i think you're the first one to say 'nice camera' in this thread.
thanks anyway. :) although, the camera is pretty much useless if the shooter doesn't know what he/she is doing. ;)

esfkotaro 05-19-2008, 02:53 AM tbh im not entirely sure WHAT her class covers...she just started a week ago, an elective that fulfills her art requirement (future med student, actually)
but she seems to enjoy it, and I know that they're doing B/W at this point so far...no idea what they'll get into in the long run though.
my photog skills are weak. sad weak. I can't even take a 1/2 decent pic of my car, in any lighting. lol.
REIGN SS 05-19-2008, 02:59 AM If its a basic class, it's probably just going to be B&W film.
It's cheaper to make prints that way.

like ryan said, it's more than likely a B&W film class then. it's a great class to take for basic knowledge. there are plenty of books out there to help you w/ your photo taking skills. lmk if you're interested in reading them. i can PM you links to books that helped me out tremendously.

chevy cobalt 08 05-23-2008, 03:58 AM Cause I can't be bothered with messing with the white balance or converting RAWs. I shoot manual, but white balance is the only thing thats auto. I already gotta fiddle with the shutter and aperture as it is...

 lazy much?
if you wanna be a real photog do everything your damn self it honestly isn't that hard and if you want the best pictures you have to learn how to do it...the camera doesn't magically know the correct WB to use...it knows something kinda close.
There's no problem using auto with the WB but your obviously not a serious photog if your doing that.
chevy cobalt 08 05-23-2008, 04:47 AM well i changed my mind and decided i don't wanna be one because theres no benefits in it and i know plenty of photogs that never touch the white balance.

um... ok i don't know what else you want me to tell you... i know what I saw.... i went to about 15 jobs with them they were either reunions or weddings and worked in his "house" office studio and watched what they did (i found nudes of the girl worker too lmao on the computer. and apparently she don't know what a razor is...) and I'm telling you first hand experience they NEVER touched the white balance or use RAW. They do not touch white balance. and I remember him saying to me he does not shoot RAW cause it's too much of a pain in the @$$. I watched how they do the jobs and learned. and they showed me what's done and how to do these jobs. I think I'd know they leave white balance on auto...

DC52NV 05-23-2008, 03:27 PM Cause I can't be bothered with messing with the white balance or converting RAWs. I shoot manual, but white balance is the only thing thats auto. I already gotta fiddle with the shutter and aperture as it is...
can't be bothered? sorry, didn't think your time shooting was so precious. only takes around 5 seconds to choose your WB and you can just set your camera on RAW or RAW+JPEG so it's not like something you have to do every single time you want to take an exposure. that's like saying you don't want to bother reading road signs while driving because you're already have to fiddle w/ the gas/brake pedal and steering wheel. i was like you, only shooting jpeg's not so long ago but knew i had to eventually step up my skill so now i only shoot RAW. best thing since slice bread. you make it seem like shooting RAW and selecting your WB is something so difficult to do. it's just a simple button you press it's not like you have to take your camera apart to set it.
well i changed my mind and decided i don't wanna be one because theres no benefits in it and i know plenty of photogs that never touch the white balance.
you're basing this off the business practice of ONE studio?
there are great benefits if you got to a legit studio. i just opened my own studio in feb. and i'll admit i'm not raking in a lot of money but it was expected as new business usually do suffer a little bit when they first start out. i still make enough to cover printing costs and rent so it's not doing so bad so far. *knocks on wood* i'm only doing this part time as well since i still have my full time job.
when i shoot candid i usually leave it on auto WB but change in PS when i do my PP.

which pics are you talking about? if mine, i never said they weren't edited. they are very much edited.

I know. But I don't take time and "set up" shots. I just basically point and shoot (don't say just use a point and shoot cam then. I use TV AV or M it varies. sometimes auto if I'm lazy.) I don't have any paitence and I'm a very "rush everything" person Btw I don't look at road signs  also If I do manually set the white balance to whatever condition it is (say its cloudy) I set it to cloudy and it never looks all that great to me... so I shot RAW once with manual wb and I found that a different WB setting looked a whole lot better so I usually don't mess with it...

that's pretty awesome! I know we don't get along but still good for you! and I hope you do well with your business! I wanted to start something on the side with photography at 1 point, or even get a permit to sell some of my photos on the sts of manhattan....but with constant people on other forums I went to constantly abusing me saying my pics suck, they're blurry, etc kinda ruined my esteem and my confidence and my joy and pride in photography....now I just... lost all interest in it cause my confidence is destroyed. I'm offically convinced my pics suck no matter how hard I try to make them good. so I just kinda gave up. I mean I take pics now and then but... meh.....
