nope, the Ion is dead

whats the point anyway, people will just bash it because of the Saturn logo and then praise the Cobalt even though its built on the same platform ;)

There will not be. Saturn Sky Redline as the LNF but the Ion was killed off at end of MY07 and was replaced by the Astra. There is talk about an Astra Redline that might be powered by the LNF but not sure on that.

I hope the call it the VXR, like the Opels and Vauxhalls. I love the exhaust on them. Hopefully Ford will finally release a Focus ST or RS in this country. There small car division is hideous. The Verve/Fiesta looks very good imo, it's just not going to be released anytime soon.

If they release a Nurburing edition with the Recaros and everything else I think they will price themselves towards an R32 and Evo GSR range. I like the Hot Hatch look but I think the Cobalt has an old school wedge look that nobody is using other than Scion. I love to see what the Vdub crowd would say? They always throw that it's German engineered crap in your face.

^^...I own an .:R32 and I think this car looks great.

Oh yeah my car is german engineered so its 1000x better thatn anythign else.

there is one reason, and one reason alone why i decided on the cobalt and not the ion. the gauges being placed over the center console. i fucking hate it. if it werent for that. id have that car instead. and to be honest if they made a redline tc quad sometime in the future (with the gauges in the right place), id get a yellow one as soon as i could afford the losses of trading in my balt.

the gauges are actually alot better once you get used to it.. i never take my eyes off the road to see how fast i'm going.. it's parallel to your line of site so you can still see the road through peripheral vision as well as see the speedo through it as well

There are Talks about having the Asta XRV Stateside. I drove one of the 3 door XR that they have now, and I've also had an XRV when i was in Germany on a business trip. I would trade my cobalt in on one of those in a heart beat. The handling was amazing and the power was spot on for the car. The state side version isn't very different from the Eurospec, which is a good thing.

The Astra VXR would cost @ 30K. If they were equiped like the EU cars. They use quality materials in the interior.(leather,Nav) They have Bi-xenon headlights. The car would compete with low end BMW's and Volvo. Saturn is not there yet to compete in that segment.

astra vxr? they should make it all wheel drive. oh my god PLEASE make it awd. the american auto market has 0 competitors with the wrx/sti/evo. we need a bad ass little awd car with a strong block to take them on! and from the looks of that it would have a nicer interior and would probably end up being cheaper.

I would love to have the 6spd. tranny. Also if Milltek make an exhaust for the cobalt. If they make an Astra Redline it would be an 09 at this late in the year. You guys should check out the next Gen. Focus RS that car is bada$$.

Over in Europe the Astra has performance version sold under the VXR label for the Vauxhall and the OPC for the Opel version. They currently still use the port-injected, 240hp 2.0L Ecotec. Those are the "super top of the line, special limited edition" type cars. The Opel Astra in the GTC trim level is a little more tame and comes with a 1.6L turbo Ecotec this year that replaced the old 2.0L turbo Ecotec.(and is now rated at 180hp).

It would be great to get a performance Saturn Astra with the same suspension tuning as the new Cobalt, the DI 2.0L turbo, and the panoramic roof option, but I don't think it will happen as soon as we hope. The Astra has been on sale for a long time in Europe and is coming up on a redesign. When GM killed the Ion and brought the current car here it was only meant to be a place filler so the Saturn dealers had something to sell in the compact segment until the new car (still a global design and essentially identical to the upcoming Euro Astra's) is introduced. They're also planning on producing that car in the US and I bet we'll see it around the same time or a little later than the next gen Cobalt.

I just moved back from Germany at the end of last year and since the time GM decided to impart the current Astra and now the dollar-to-Euro currency rate has plummeted even further. What used to be a "make no profit" but build market and have a better car to offer has now probably turned into costing GM a lot of money lost on every sale. I'm guessing that's why there's essentially no advertising dollars being spent on the car and why they aren't pushing for a lot of sales… yet.

My educated guess is that if the Astra production in the current for gets moved to the US prior to the global redesign we might have a better chance to see a turbo Astra for sale on our shores. It would be less expensive to build it here and they could probably justify the expensive certification and testing required. If the production stays in Europe there's a chance we could see the 1.6L turbo or maybe the older 2.0L turbo used in the VXR/OPC, but if you think about how much that certification would cost and how few would be sold I wouldn't hold your breath. I hope I'm wrong but I wouldn't hold out on hopes of a turbo Astra here any time soon.
