View Full Version : Average MPG in your Cobalt
REIGN SS 06-07-2008, 10:29 AM What is your average MPG in your Cobalt PER TANK OF GAS
This is the # your DIC shows, not what you get using the "old-school" math method.
I'm not talking about the one time you reset it going 62 on your trip to TN and got 47 mpg, I mean what is your usual average week to week (or fillup to fillup)
schamsy 06-07-2008, 10:41 AM I am getting 27 almost every time. Last tank i got 333.7 miles and it took 12.3 gallons to fill.
OzzyruleZ 06-07-2008, 10:45 AM I usually end up in between 30 - 32 on the DIC on my work week. Thats driving normal and no WOT runs. Its a mix of highway and city about 82 miles round trip per day. I fill up Sunday, and then end up refueling again Thursday morning.
njtrippe 06-07-2008, 10:52 AM I average 28+. That's city, highway, and spirited drives.
stonny9 06-07-2008, 11:06 AM I get about 23 and I have a heavy foot but I use cruise control on any stretch of road 1 mile or longer so I dont speed but at the same time can go the max legal speed when I dont mean to speed.
gre23a 06-07-2008, 11:52 AM my 2007 2.2 AT, with k&n short ram and ss/sc down-pipe and exhaust gets an average of 24-25 almost all city driving and short highway runs. so about 310 miles per tank some times less.
Joeyavhu 06-07-2008, 11:57 AM I usually get about 36-38 MPG reseting it each time. I also mostly shift at 2K, and dont really come close to boost very often. Plus, it is mainly "highway" driving around here, there is no stop and go anywhere. Lol
Wild Balt 06-07-2008, 12:00 PM Clicked LNF and meant LSJ...oops. Still getting about 27-28 mpg on a bone stock ss/sc cobalt. About 80% highway and 20% city. The DIC says 30, but doing the math at the station, its clearly optimistic.
M-Dub 06-07-2008, 12:05 PM Usually between 26-30
chevy cobalt 08 06-07-2008, 12:06 PM 2.4 LE5 Ecotec
i usually get 21.3 or 21.7 city depending on my driving habits. 19 if I do a lot of fast accelerating. Get into 5th gear as much as you can cause thats the gas saver. I noticed my mpg varys a lot differently from 4th and 5th gear. like the 19 as apposed to 21
DangotBoost 06-07-2008, 12:17 PM 26.9 on the DIC with very little WOT driving.:twothumbs
25 everytime, with the occasion WOT run, just for the hell of it. i'm playing the "how much gas milage" can i get game right now... so far up to 33 mpg
Red2.4SS 06-07-2008, 12:28 PM 24MPG is my average DIC after tons of normal daily driving.
BTW the average speed is ~30MPH with that.
Shibito 06-07-2008, 01:00 PM I get about 40 highway only going 60-65 and not using the gas on hills. I get about 25-30 city since I'm a slow accelerator and I try not to accelerate when going up or down hills, just maintain speed going up and let gravity increase my speed when going down. Display says it's an overall average of 30.7
chevy cobalt 08 06-07-2008, 01:00 PM 24MPG is my average DIC after tons of normal daily driving.
BTW the average speed is ~30MPH with that.
lol mine is 16mph
weavagra 06-07-2008, 01:26 PM Summer normal everyday = 25-30
Summer highway = 35-40 (best ever was 42 last weekend about 200 miles of highway)
Winter normal everyday = 20-25
Winter highway = 25-30
2.2 auto
SSSCEnthusiast 06-07-2008, 01:37 PM Im stage 3, getting 29.8 MPG, Most everywhere... Higher on the highway, of course.
sherm420 06-07-2008, 01:39 PM im getting 34 in my ss/t
Ducky22287 06-07-2008, 01:43 PM Last night when I checked it was at 27 and bounces between that and 26.9. (It's a 2.4 btw). How are people in the 2.4 getting between 35 and 40?
BitchyTheDwarf 06-07-2008, 01:48 PM my mpg just went up for some reason. Used to be 29 or 30 just about all of the time, but it's currently at 32? Only thing that has changed is the temp outside. I still just drive the car to work one day a week and maybe to the store on Sunday.
SSSCEnthusiast 06-07-2008, 01:58 PM im getting 34 in my ss/t
Yeah, and you're in your break in period, hahaha.
midniteracr06 06-07-2008, 02:03 PM most of the time ill get 35.6 or more as i usually drive highway to my girlfriends house which is 110 miles one way. i tend to take it easy most of the time but every now and then ill accelerate fast to hear the intake. if i really take it easy, a couple of times going to my girlfriends i got 40 mpg avg but it was hard to do as i was constantly watching the dic to make sure i got good gas mileage.
GhostFox 06-07-2008, 03:41 PM Last night when I checked it was at 27 and bounces between that and 26.9. (It's a 2.4 btw). How are people in the 2.4 getting between 35 and 40?
All highway driving?
I get a brutal split on mine. Basically 20 mpg city, 40 mpg highway.
Unfortunately I do about 100% city driving on a normal basis.
TheCaptain 06-07-2008, 05:25 PM Almost always 33-35 Imperial MPG. Highway at 125-130 K, and in town at 40-60 K. Almost 50/50.
Edit: Btw Reign, nice idea on the poll finally. Maybe a sticky so noobs can't post new "whats your mpg?" threads?...
WhiteSSBalt 06-07-2008, 10:19 PM I average from 26-29mpg in my 2.4. But when I go down and visit my rents in SC, its gone as high as 35mpg.
Billig ss/sc 06-07-2008, 10:28 PM I'm averaging around 29 or 30 in my ss/sc if I don't drive it hard
suburbanrobot 06-07-2008, 10:44 PM duh... I put LNF instead of LSJ.... I'm getting 25-30, unless I can't control my foot which happens from time to time... then I get 24ish :twothumbs
at the race track I get 6 mpg :lol:
auto-Xing I get about 8 mpg
I am amazed at the power and economy combination, truly a great motor :twothumbs
ls68506 06-08-2008, 10:32 PM I average about 23- 25 depending on my right foot. My highway gets about 35!
455rocket 06-09-2008, 11:09 AM 2.4L auto here, If Im not paying attention and just driving hard with traffic I get 27 or 28. If I make an effort to drive easy and stick to it, not letting it shift past 2500 rpm, i can get 33-34. I drive 40 miles each way to work so it pays to take it easy on the gas pedal.
lsjwannabe 06-09-2008, 11:13 AM 25~26 all city not trying
Z_Ghost 06-14-2008, 04:30 AM City stop and go HWY on the way to work and no traffic on the way (3am) home.
27.9 for the week.
2008 SS/TC
esfkotaro 06-14-2008, 04:45 AM depends on my mood.
bad mood tanks: 29mpg
typical\good mood tanks: 31-33mpg
domin8_gt 06-14-2008, 04:57 AM Reign, I voted for the 25-30 on the LSJ. Since I have a LE5 also could you edit the poll to reflect a vote for 25-30 on the 2.4 also?
Preston 06-14-2008, 01:03 PM last one i got 27...time before that 25...ha
im trying to conserve gas. ha

damn Bryan... did you add the Hybrid option:lol:
for me to get any MPG near that, I'd have to chop off half my foot
Area47 06-14-2008, 04:08 PM thats with cams, 60's, and my majik finers!
summer gas does wonders. as well as a crap load of part throttle timing.
My DIC says 30.x MPG most of the time, using the old school method I usually get anywhere from 26-28 MPG per tank. I do a lot of highway driving.
REIGN SS 06-27-2008, 01:49 AM I'm going to move this here
steddy2112 06-27-2008, 04:30 AM 30-35 in the Turbobalt.
That includes some romps up to 135
:D love this fucking car
krispy 06-27-2008, 10:00 AM LNF @ ~27mpg
mostly 75mph freeway & stop and go traffic (which actually raises the average)
BOOSSTED 06 06-27-2008, 10:06 AM in my LSJ I was getting almost 40 to the gallon on the highway
Dunkinuts 06-27-2008, 10:06 AM on avg. i hit low 30s when i drive normal, if i am being good then i have hit 38mpg but heavy foot driving nets me around 25-28mpg
BOOSSTED 06 06-27-2008, 10:06 AM LNF @ ~27mpg
mostly 75mpg freeway & stop and go traffic (which actually raises the average)
you mean mph correct, I would love 75 mpg though
alleycat58 06-27-2008, 10:12 AM I guess week-to-week I put 30-35 on my LSJ. That's not really accurate because my driving is extremely varied. I'll go a few weeks on nothing but city driving and sit at 28mpg or I'll go a few weeks on nothing but highway driving and be sitting at 38mpg. So I averaged those to 33mpg.
I'm trying to baby the car though so that I can officially say I haven't stopped at a gas pump in a month :-). Should have ~415 miles on this tank of gas if I keep getting the same mileage.
krispy 06-27-2008, 10:45 AM you mean mph correct, I would love 75 mpg though
err, yea, the 'g' and the 'h' are right next to each other on the keyboard ;)
CSM Huber 07-01-2008, 10:18 AM It occurred to me that the higher mileage reported by Canadian Cobalt owners might be due to the larger volume of the Canadian gallon...
here's a cut and paste.. http://aquaweb.pair.com/forums/archives/loach4/index.cgi?read=41109
TOPIC: A "PRACTICAL" PROBLEM
When travelling, we are sometimes confronted with a unit that involves "gallons", and frequently this involves American gallons which are different from Canadian gallons. The problem, then, is what is the conversion from American to Canadian gallons and vice versa?
In Canada, if we use gallons at all, we use the British gallon which is defined in a logical way: 1 gallon of water weighs 10 pounds (not very metric, but logical at least). The American gallon is defined as 3.786 litres. There is probably a logical reason for the American gallon as well, but I am not aware of it. The problem is to convert from one to the other.
We can proceed by finding the mass of each gallon:
A Canadian gallon of water weighs 10 lb which is the same as 4.535 kg. The American gallon is equivalent to 3.786 litres, and since 1 litre of water weighs 1 kg, an American gallon of water weighs 3.786 kg. Obviously, the Canadian gallon is the larger.
The ratio is 1 gal(CAN) = 4.535 / 3.786 = 1.198 gal (US). Rounding this off to 3 significant figures, we find 1 gal(CAN) = 1.20 gal(US).
So bottom line, the Canadian gallon is almost FIVE US quarts while the US Gallon is FOUR US Quarts. OR another way is 4 Canadian Gallons is ALMOST 5 US Gallons. The result is that if the general Mile Per Gallon term is used Canadian Cobalts will get about 20 percent higher gas mileage than US Cobalts... maybe better.
A 33 MPG Cobalt with US Gallons would get about 40 MPG with Canadian Gallons....
DaBuzzard 09-12-2008, 03:35 PM But, does the DIC show us MP(US)G or MP(IMPERIAL)G ?
I suspect the former......7.2 litre/100km = 32.1 MP(US)G .... which agrees with DIC.
7.2 litre/100km = 38.4 MP(IMPERIAL)G
I would expect this is because we :ca: don't buy gas by the gallon anymore, we buy litres. No point having the DIC calculate MP(IMPERIAL)G for a market where there are no gallons anymore.
That said, I am averaging 34 - 35 MP(US)G on my 2.4 5 speed, 160 km (100 miles) a day, about 80% highway. Cruise at 110 - 115 k (70 or so mph), shift between 3000 and 3300 or so.....unless I'm in a hurry, or just want to hear it sing.
Some of the secondary highways I drive on are posted at 80 k (50 mph), if I actually stay that slow I can get close to 50.....but little old ladies in minivans pas me then so......I am happy enough with mid 30's :)
91 octane btw, have not noted any mileage gains over 87 but it pulls better / smoother from low (under 1500) revs.
07touringcoupe 09-12-2008, 03:46 PM I think i get horrible gas mileage. My DIC said 272 when i filled up. I got to fill up twice a week :thumbsdow. But here is my question. Is it better to drive at high rpms out of boost or low rpms in boost?
kazinova 09-12-2008, 05:10 PM I think i get horrible gas mileage. My DIC said 272 when i filled up. I got to fill up twice a week :thumbsdow. But here is my question. Is it better to drive at high rpms out of boost or low rpms in boost?
Take a wild guess.
07touringcoupe 09-12-2008, 05:12 PM Take a wild guess.
didnt ask anybody to be a dick. Im not saying in high boost but like in 5 llbs
kazinova 09-12-2008, 05:14 PM I'm not trying very hard to be a dick on this one. Here's a general rule I've developed in my 23 years on this planet.
Higher RPM w/ Throttle == Higher Fuel Consumption
With very few exceptions, I've found it to be true.

ok let me give you s situation. UNDER NORMAL DRIVING, lets say im in 3rd gear and i come to a hill and corse you gotta use more throttle to get up this hill, now you are at 4k rpms out of boost and if you switch gears to 4th to maintain the same you have to put more throttle putting you in boost at lower rpms. Which is better for fuel economy?

The honest answer is that it depends, however, going up a high you want to be in a lower gear than you normally would be to be as efficient as possible. You might be boggin or waste energy on turning the motor if you shift up and have to mash the throttle to keep going up the hill.
Although, things may be different in an SC car.
Spanky's Monkey 10-02-2008, 10:02 PM 27.8 daily driving....spirited, daily driving
22.3 .....you don't wanna know.
JDMjunkie 10-02-2008, 10:04 PM 31.3mpg with my SS/SC :)
Gestapo007 10-02-2008, 10:26 PM I wanna see driver information center averages. Thats whats up
scottyguy401 10-02-2008, 10:32 PM Well I have an auto 2.4, and drive rather spirtedly in the city. I get 22 avg with my avg speed being 25
hoffa 10-02-2008, 10:32 PM 30ish when it's all said n done.
06SuperSport 10-02-2008, 10:46 PM I'm averaging roughly 25-27.5 city driving. Have yet to see what I average on highway.
WickedSS2005 10-02-2008, 11:16 PM After some fine tuning under normal driving, I get 37mpg on average per my DIC. 38.5mpg by my math skillz
Firebirdhorn 10-02-2008, 11:23 PM 31 or 32 mpg on average.
DaveinCoalinga 10-12-2008, 10:05 PM My last 4 tanks averaged with the DIC is 30.3.
2.4 manual trans
stealthy1ss 10-12-2008, 10:13 PM I get about 34-35mpg now that I am tuned and the highest that I have ever got was 40mpg.
Tundraboarder666 10-13-2008, 03:31 AM 2.2 auto with a lead foot...
I get 26-28 range most of the time.
mrdan 10-30-2008, 12:22 AM in my 05 2.2 5spd cpe i am normally getting 32-34mpg that is a mix of in town and highway, goofing off too. my personal best is 39.8mpg no goofing off, no wot, in town and highway. i am more than happy with that!
cruisn 10-30-2008, 12:26 AM I average about 33-35mpg in my 2.4 98% percent highway. lol. cruising at 120 for half and 110 for the other half.
I am also heavy on the right foot to get up to speed... so that hurts mine a bit...
HackAbuse 10-30-2008, 12:28 AM 0, my engine currently can't move my car. lol.
my dic says im gettin 34 mpg, bullshit, i did the math 10 gallons, 285 miles
ever since i went stage 2 my dic mpg has been off worse did anyone else get that?
Rydis 02-05-2009, 08:50 AM I seem to only be getting 22/23 highway. I usually drive casually shifting around 2200-2500 rpms and keep a steady speed around 80 mph...does this seem norma with 93 octane?
kwest 02-05-2009, 09:13 AM my dic says im gettin 34 mpg, bullshit, i did the math 10 gallons, 285 miles
ever since i went stage 2 my dic mpg has been off worse did anyone else get that?
yea thats how mine was. its because of the tune. since ive got my 60s installed and the custom tune i get waay better gas mileage since my car was stock, plus the exhaust helps too. I usually get around 30-33mpg. But i dont drive like a bat out of hell, shift at 2k rpms generally.
Gestapo007 02-05-2009, 11:31 AM i have a feeling alot of these high averages arnt "averages" some1 just put there car in cruise control at 40 mph and looked how much they get at 40, the mpg INST or whatever. No way there averages. my 2.2 got 31 mpg average driving from NY to NC. as soon as i got back i reset it and it went down to like 27.5 around town. i just feel like alot of these numbers are exagurated
chevy cobalt 08 02-05-2009, 05:28 PM Why am I the only fool that seems to only get around 18-19 mpg in a 2.4? Or is it that Staten Island really has too much stop and go compared to other cities? I don't get into 5th often either and I drive mostly local 30mph roads. (max 40) Not much of highway at all.
REIGN SS 02-05-2009, 06:27 PM my dic says im gettin 34 mpg, bullshit, i did the math 10 gallons, 285 miles
ever since i went stage 2 my dic mpg has been off worse did anyone else get that?
How often do you reset it?
hossdeuce 02-09-2009, 03:51 PM gettin 26-30 mpg on my lil beast! (some WOT) around 300 miles to every fill
I think mines sitting at around 26 right now.
It was about 23-25 this winter (very cold), but in the summer I usually get 30-33 (math calculated).
I take off around 2.5k-3k RPM, and I do get on it sometimes. I have a hill to climb when I turn out of work, and then another one after I turn at the light. So depending on traffic, I sometimes wind it up to 4, sometimes even go WOT.
ace921000 03-06-2009, 06:42 PM 22.7 mpg in a 2.4. i drive pretty much all city with some highway every now and then
Black SS/SC 06 03-06-2009, 06:43 PM Usually 25-30 mpg
my normal punk kid driving habits, in city, getting about 300-320 per tank with a 2.2 auto.
Highway, cross country, with the car loaded down pulling 390-400 miles per tank
If I baby it, in city probably worth another 30 miles on the first number so 330-350 per tank. dont know what it can do unloaded on a long highway trip. Probably close to the 400 number. thats still being slightly hard on it, no cruise control either.
All in all happy with it, basically hangs between 25-30 mpg
wantedSS/TC 04-23-2009, 04:29 PM Yeah, for the "life" of my car, so far I'm averaging 25.5 mpg (the car only has 900 miles on it though).
gre23a 04-29-2009, 11:20 AM i made it from houston to san antonio on one tank when i went to see nine inch nails. i dont remember the exact numbers tho but at an average of 65mph i got close to 32mpg, i am getting about 26mpg all city driving with a heavy foot.
wantedSS/TC 04-29-2009, 11:28 AM Now i'm down to 25.2 after the meet ... too much boost, but I LOOOVE boost :)
Blue_Balt 04-30-2009, 11:48 AM Going down to MD for a meet last weekend I avg 35.
Doing my usual shit I avg around 25-26 mixed.
koch1ar 04-30-2009, 11:59 AM XFE only reset DIC once. I have a lead foot. 23.7 ios what is says right now. WOT almost every chance i get. monday i'll fill and reset it, and see how much i can get
dousmanbob 05-07-2009, 12:08 AM I have a plain jane balt not an ss. 5 speed and I putter down the highway right lane at 60.

You should have bought a used LSJ or LNF!

I'd certainly say so
dunit121 06-08-2009, 12:58 AM my car says 19.9 but i drive more city then highway and i love to here my turbo spool so yah thats my problem but sound > money

I don't know what Wicked did, but it worked!!!
Deathscythe 06-08-2009, 01:20 AM I see 31 in the city, and between 37 and 42 highway, depending on my cruising speed. I see 37.8 driving at 80 mph. BennyHHR did my tuning for me.
chevymanva 06-17-2009, 07:39 PM My Dic says 27.3 at the moment i usually fill up with an 1/8th tank left and thats usually with 260 to 280 miles of drivin and the miles to empty is usually between 70 and 100 miles left.
ForsakenOutlaw57 07-29-2009, 12:13 PM I average in the mid to high 20s but all of my driving is highway and its 5 miles to and 5 miles from work. I peaked 36.4 mpg though on a trip down the LIE out to Nesconset. Avg speed was 52 mph for the trip but I was easily booking 75/80 for a large portion of the trip, windows down, no cruise control, locked into fifth gear just cruising.

06'Yellow SS/SC 09-08-2009, 08:25 PM i dont get how people are getting 38+ with the LSJ i get like 24 in the city if i'm lucky and as high as 35 on the freeway. i have no tune, stock with an intake and flowmaster on it now.

On an uphill 340 mile trip to upstate NY this weekend I managed 30.1mpg while doing 70mph. I'd say 90% of it was highway.
Going back home and doing 80mph for most of the way while hitting some traffic....28.9mpg
*edit* this is not my normal average. My daily commute is a mix of highway and stop and go...24-25mpg
