View Full Version : SS/TC Upgrades from Hahn RaceCraft

EcoBoost

It's official...we pick up our SS/TC today!

We are getting her from Lattof Chevy in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Those of you familiar with Crate Engine Depot, another fine vendor at this site, will recognize Lattof as CED's home base. We are pleased to work with such a faithful supporter of Cobalts in general and Cobaltss.net in particular!

As many of you know, Hahn RaceCraft has led the way with turbocharged Ecotecs since their emergence in the US with the 2002 Cavalier and Sunfire. Along the way, we've raised the bar repeatedly for Ecotec Turbo performance, while introducing hundreds of Ecotec owners to the sublime advantages of Turbocharged Power. Our very first Eco-effort won the prestigious GM Design Award at SEMA, an impressive 12-second, stock engine EcoCav show car that ran 12's with our bolt-on TurboSystem. We haven't looked back since, with more records and firsts than all others combined.

We're proud to bring our 20 years of GM FWD Turbo Performance to bear on this exciting new application of the LNF Turbo! We've had a great time with this engine so far in Solstice/Sky and HHR, and now it's the Cobalt's turn.

Products we'll offer include:

Our popular 3" Stainless Steel exhaust system, prized for its sound, valued for its HP PPC Tuner
Intercooler Upgrade
Piping Upgrades
S20G Turbo Upgrade
....and much more!

The goal? High 11's on radials, stock engine, just like we did with our SRT-4. This is going to be fun!

A nice goal would be a high 12 sec SS/TC for less than $1500 in staged parts.

I don't see that as impossible with traction :)

All you need from the power side of things is a computer, yes? I would think the stock turbo and fuel system is capable of producing 12-second power. Just need to get it to the ground...

I agree. The K04 is capable of pushing enough air to get the tq up in the low/mid 300's at the wheels. Hopefully the direct injection can be tuned effectively.

It appears (and I say this after only reading a couple of dynos) that the tq peak is being managed by the ECU. So maybe bolt ons will have a minimal effect without proper tuning. I could be way off base here.

Looking forward to your work Bill

Im looking forward to the turbo upgrade! The stock turbo is WAY too undersized - it runs out of air around 4.5k rpm...

I just got my car dyno'd this weekend and the speed shop was pushing hard to let them start messing around with trying to tune it.. uh... no. :) They told me this was the first DI car they had dyno'd and were going to use my dyno charts as baselines to compare to other cars (AFR wise)

What a terrifying idea, the possibility of a privately owned Cobalt with a Hahn turbo system under the hood. This is terrible, Cobalts might actually become fast.

Actually. When i go to NY im going to prove you can put a stock cobalt TC into the high 12's with just a few modifications. So with Bill's produtcts and our wonderfull ecotec, the skys the limit.

Edit. It was a statement and a fact, this is not my thread, so do not argue - send a message to me if you have a must to.

yea by just takin off the muffler

Have you not read? anything? i never once said removing a muffler makes you fast & have crazy power.
It is barley a 5hp gain and thats only above 4k from what i seen on dyno testing.

You should be banned for trying to ruin someone elses thread ' a paying vender none the less' like you did mine '

This isnt correct. For a 2.0L motor, the K04 is adequately sized. It's efficiency range is actually quite nice and could easily handle 20psi. Like I said, mid 350wtq is achievable on the K04.

Im not convinced of that until I see it - the dyno runs just show a nice torque level that steadily drops down from its peak numbers.. Maybe this engine just needs the correct supporting mods, but it just feels asthmatic at higher RPMs.. Low to mid its GREAT. Maybe thats the way GM programmed the computer? Who knows until some serious tuning gets started.

Essentially forever...we've run these transmissions up to ludicrous power with no issues in other applications. It all comes down to not abusing it needlessly:

Yes sir. The stock SS/TC Getrag F35 is a very evolved piece, improved once again for SS/TC over its previous iteration in SS/SC. We also use the predecessor to F35, the F23. It's in a Sunfire that so far has run 11.1 @ 132 in the 1/4 mile. This car has recorded almost 200 11 and 12 second passes on a pair of F23's, with slicks, with no failures.

The F23 and F35 are very well designed and internally robust. They are up to the task!

well thats one nice looking car, and thank you sir for the info.

Those Getrag Transmissions are really made to last, so I wonder why one of the GM spokes person said initially there wont be any staged releases for the car due to the transmission being at the limit for the power it could handle.

I'd presume he was talking about the theoretical limit that Getrag publishes. The LNF engine builds a fair amount of torque, well more than the LSJ. But that's OK. More upgrades for Hahn RaceCraft to do then!

Bill,

Since the exhaust was designed for the SC (soundwise) - would you consider fabricating the same exhaust without the muffler and only the resonator? I wonder with the cat and resonator if it would be just as quiet as the SC exhaust.

Much like the SRT4 exhaust.

I'd opt for an exhaust like this - esp if it costs less as well.

I hear you, but I doubt we'll tool up for these changes...we like our 3" exhausts to be as legal as possible, and removing sound control from them runs counter to that goal.

We'll do some sound clips for y'all when we have it installed and let you listen!

Steddy -

You bring up a good point. Why the low rev limit on the 2.0L? I'm not sure of the bore/stroke but I would think most 2.0Ls could spin upwards of 7K. I suppose it depends on how oversquare the motor is.

SR20DETs with a 86/86 could go to 7800 in stock trim.

More of a TQ rescriction than anything...but jesus I had a tuned LE5 before this car...I still run into the rev limiter

There is more to picking a shift RPM than running it up to max red line. Go back to page 3 and look at the dyno, HP starts to fall off after 6200 or so. The part of that dyno chart that's missing is torque. You want RPMs to fall back into your peak torque right after a shift. Need to consider that too.

Depends on the turbo and whether or not it runs out of breath up top.

The exhaust isn't too rescrictive.

We get pops on upshifts.

3" back to the resonator then 2.5" from there

The intake on the other hand...but still isn't all that bad.

Thank you, and yes sir, stock in every way save for our mods.

BELIEVE me, this is far from optimized...for a first time out, we actually learned more than anything, so there'a a lot left on the table with this car. It was sticky hot and humid too, with corrected altitude in the 2500 ft. region.

ONWARD! So much more to come :)

wow great job

da was just a hair over 1500

Here's the timeslip! :-D

http://www.turbosystem.com/ProjectVehicles/New_Folder/Cobalt/13.20%20timeslip%20cobalt%20ss-tc.gif

I have an enormous amount of data to compile and analyze, along with vids to post. I should have time to do so this evening. In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions here, and I'll adress them when I get back.

What a fun car! :cssNET:

what mods are on the car? what was the car being launched at? the 2.0 60ft looks as though you didn't leave off the 2 step. The car looks very healthy up top. GREAT RUN AND SIGN ME UP FOR THE MODS!

Im looking forward to the turbo upgrade! The stock turbo is WAY too undersized - it runs out of air around 4.5k rpm...

I just got my car dyno'd this weekend and the speed shop was pushing hard to let them start messing around with trying to tune it.. uh... no. :) They told me this was the first DI car they had dyno'd and were going to use my dyno charts as baselines to compare to other cars (AFR wise)

thats more torque management and boost control then the turbo.

What rpm were you shifting at?

What is the redline?

Were you using the launch control?

GOD BLESS YOU HAHN! UR THE REASON WHY MY COMP. SCREEN IS STICKY WITH SPOOGE!

Have a look!

l'll look this thread over for questions the new thread does not answer.

Thanks everyone for the excellent interest!

I am about to buy this BSR tune.

Hey Bill does it keep the no lift shift?

Also 7k redline(please God say yes) in the 1st two gears right?
