So get this. 1998. That was the last time that I bought a car just for me. It was mine. Of course I wasn't married yet so I had free reign... could pick what ever I wanted without consequences.

Fast forward to 6 months ago. I'm starting to think that it's about time to think about another personal car. Something just for me. Something fun... something hot. Something Corvette. But hey, I'm married now with 2 kids. I need to be practical, right? And I couldn't just get a Vette... it'd have to be a Z06... or worse.

Then I began to think about the Camaro. Fun, hot, half the price of the Vette and I can throw the kids in the back. Problem is, summer is here and there's no Camaro. Next best thing? Pontiac G8. But there's yet another problem... two actually. There's clearly going to be a GXP, but it isn't here now. And can I really settle for the GT and get wasted by some Joe in a SRT-8?... not liking that idea. Also, this thing sucks gas. I'm not liking 22mpg hwy for a car that I'd like to drive to the office all summer. Heck, the Vette does much better.

So I have a delima. I have to find a car that meets all of these requirements: Fun, hot, cheap, good gas mileage and have the ability to throw the kids in the back.

In walk Chevy Cobalt SS. It seems to do it all. It's fun, fast, cheap, economical and hey, there's a back seat!

The Problem: It just isn't fair that I would buy a brand new 'just for me' car and leave the wife out. Of course it doesn't count that I bought a brand new Saturn Vue Redline for her to use just two years ago. So here I am, scheduled to sign the papers on my Cobalt SS today (which BTW the car has not arrived at the dealership yet). I'm at work and I get a call... the wife is at the dealership looking at a new vehicle... a family vehicle. Wanna take a guess what she picked?

OK this story is getting too long... but you should all be aware. The purchasing of a brand new Cobalt SS Turbo can lead to this. Currently, at this very moment sitting in my garage is a 2008 fully loaded $55,000 Chevrolet Suburban with all of it's gloriousness and it's 19mpg... but no Cobalt.

Everyone... beware.

Fortunately, there is no gas guzzler on the Suburban... really strange. Probably because it's a flexfuel. Dealer filled it up for me today, warning me that it cost them $115.

And just so you know, the Cobalt is still on it's way. Just not here now. (I wasn't going to get nothing out of the deal.)

Nah... I still don't get a Vette. But I'm sure the Cobalt will be a blast. And I'll feel less guilty for abusing it.

BTW. I was completely up front with the dealership about my aftermarket intentions wanting to get their reaction. Their response was pretty much 'Cool!' They said that there'd be no problem. The service manager was great. Totally understood that these cars are going to be messed with. He was kind of a big kid himself.

Actually, this morning they had 8 on the lot. By the end of the day they had 3. Sold a lot of Tahoes and trucks as well. This 72mo. 0% interest is a big kick in the pants. Was really what sealed the deal for us. Managed to get our payments down to $700/mo with GMS and a nice down payment.

Why stick with Vue that should have plenty of room for all, when you can get a big ass suburban to fit the entire neighborhood in? They still charged you $55K even though they can't give them away and the 72 hr sale?

Marriage/Family is a life long lesson in sacrifice.

But sorry man, I can't see how a $55,000 Suburban in an age of skyrocketing fuel prices sacrifices much of anything.

There are tons and tons of less expensive vehicles available that could haul around a small family, so you've obviously got the extra $$ to spend.

So why are you  over a 'lil $24k car?

Trucks don't have to pay "gas-guzzler" tax, as they WERE NOT MEANT to be personal vehicles. Thus, a loophole was there before they even became trendy. The law is supposedly going to be changed on this soon, but it hasn't yet.

Regardless, if my wife so much as considered WASTING money on something like a Fully Loaded Suburban (when all she really needed was an HHR), She'd get an earful.

Although, MY wife would NEVER consider such a thing in the first place.

Hope you realize that $55k truck has already depreciated down to $35k. Good luck with that.

My dad works at a dealership and no one is buying trucks/SUVs or anything that gets under 20mpg but every one is trading them in. Allot of people are getting pissed because they think there 40k vehicle is worth alot more than the dealer will give them. The more of that type of vehicle they have on the lot the less they give you on the trade in regardless of what kbb or any of the other pricing guides say. The more gas sucking options you have the more they take off(bigger tires/wheels, lifts, etc). Last year a guy bought a 40k plus truck and put about 20-30k miles on it and the dealer would only give him 9k for it. He said that they have TONS of 07-08 trucks sitting on there lot for under 13k. My point of all this gibber is to say this shit is just getting out of hand and we need to at least get something stabilized before we can't even afford to drive. For some reason it seems to affect the people in the states more, because the people in canada have been paying these high prices for years and haven't really driven there economy into a recession. Sorry not really trying to thread jack.

Your story sounds kinda familiar to what I'm going through, except I already own a 2006 SS/SC and a 2007 SS/NA sedan. I mde the mistake of showing my wife the 2009 SS/TC sedan. Now she wants one bad. I think that because she (very likely) will be getting one I want to upgrade too. Fortunately, most of my mods will carry over to the SS/TC if I get one. Why is it that they get the $45,000 SUV and we get the $20,000 compact and we still get ZERO ass? She got the 5.7L Hemi 4x4 Overland Grand Cherokee which cost just $1500 MORE than the SRT-8, I can only assume it is because of the rear entertainment and NAV system. Meanwhile I'm driving a 06 2.4 SS that cost 18,000. I would so be getting a Vette in 3 years after both of these are paid off if I didn't know that gas will be flippin 6 or 7 dollars a gallon by then........

I'd love to see that in writing, in some fine print somewhere, because...

WHAT IS COVERED
Engine
Cylinder head and block
All internally lubricated parts
Manifolds
Timing gears and timing cover
Timing belt (until the first scheduled maintenance interval)
Flywheel
Oil pump/oil pump housing, water pump and fuel pump
Harmonic balancer
OHC carriers
Valve covers
Oil pan
Engine mount
Seals and gaskets
Turbocharger or supercharger
Fuel systems

wow, all I can say is wow. I have to admit that I"m actually shopping for a 3/4 ton diesel, or a big 8 4x4. I need this truck for what I do, my 1/2 ton 4x4 just doesn't cut it. People will still need trucks for what they were intended for, but the days of using them as a sports car are gone.

tsunam1
06-28-2008, 11:16 PM
Well our big ass truck has never been farther than about 20 miles from the house and her work commute is less than 5 miles round trip, so gas mileage isn't really an issue, because there isn't any mileage, 4000 miles in 8 months is like 500 a month @ 14 miles to the gallon is 35.7 gallons @ 4.30 a gallon = $153 in gas a month. I do about 1130 in the cobalt a month so that comes out to about $195 a month with 24 avg mpg.

He said that as long as I always have it serviced there I could just about get away with whatever I wanted... shy of replacing that bottom end.

Oh and a big heads up. If you're thinking about the extended bumper to bumper, you should all know that our dual-scroll turbo is not covered under the 100,000 mi. drivetrain waranty as it is not part of the 'sealed' engine. Apparently they regard it as any other accessory, ie. alternator. Only it's about a $1200 alternator. Apparently this little bugger is some pricey piece of hardware.

it's says on the GMPP paperwork that the turbos are part of the 'fuel system' only covered for 36K, so you need the multi year warranty either at purchase or within 36K/36 months.

If you need a good deal on the GMPP try Fichtner chevy at gmpp@fichtnerchevrolet.com

thanks for the headsup, regardless it's not /drive train/ warranty :-)

i see this car as a five year sponsorship from GM to go to track days and weekends :-)

thanks GM - I needed a sponsor, now find me a good deal on tires and brake pads :-)

put this in another thread:

What does the The Chevy 100,000-Mile Warranty include?
In general, the powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, transfer case and axle assemblies on light duty vehicles as indicated below:

* Engine
Cylinder head, block, timing gears, timing chain, timing cover, oil pump/oil pump housing, OHC carriers, valve covers, oil pan, seals, gaskets, turbocharger, supercharger and all internal lubricated parts as well as manifolds, flywheel, water pump, harmonic balancer and engine mount. Diesel engine coverage includes the timing belts until the first scheduled maintenance interval.

OK. So I'm 4 days in and I have to say that I love the vehicle. It really is about the nicest thing, short of an Escalade, that GM makes. Ours has the FlexFuel and the Displacement on Demand which shuts 4 cylinders off. The whole trip I spent searching for a sweet spot. At 70mph the truck averages around 19-20, but will not run in V4 mode on level pavement. Drop down to 60-65 and it's a whole different world. At 65 mph is 22mpg and at 60mph the gas jumped to about 24mpg. For the whole trip we averaged about 21mpg.

The around town stuff is killing me... about 15-16. But then I really wasn't doing any better in our Saturn Vue.

Now I'm searching for a programmer that will let me edit the V4-V8 mode algorithim. I'm thinking that I can push this thing up to a consistant 25 on the hwy.

Hmm.... cake AND eat it too.

More later... the features are amazing.

OK... as an update. My Cobalt was build on the week of June 9th. As of today, my car still has not arrived yet. The same day that the dealer ordered my car, they ordered another one... same options minus the Limited Slip...(of course).

Guess which one showed up today?

They're trying to talk me into taking the one that they have in stock. Who in their right mind would want one of these cars WITHOUT a limited slip?

Anyway, I'm gonna go test drive this thing and drive the hell out of it. Call it my warm up. Then I'm gonna tell them NO and demand that they tint my windows and install the carbon fiber trim kit for my patience.

man, shit happens, I wouldn't go around demanding this and that, its really not the dealerships fault the car isn't here, they are used to a few weeks for a car to arrive, not months

be patient or find a car that you want thats there now, don't go abusing something that someone on the board might end up buying, its just immature

I wouldn't go an fuck with someone else's brand new car just because you're pissed.

The other stuff...sure...but no need to abuse a car someone else will buy.

That's not the point. He's already begun hassling me about how unimportant that limited slip is. And I know that no amount of talking is going to convince him.

Too late for that man. Already a done deal. we've got close to 2k miles on it at this point. BTW, if anyone else ever gets a 5.3L Burb or Tahoe, get the HPTuners VCM suite. I found out last week that the Active Fuel Management will only engage below 6% TPS but with HPTuners you can adjust this to what ever variable you want. At 10% we're averaging almost 24mpg hwy. Not bad for a 5700lb beast.

Well, I went to the dealership yesterday and they actually had two in... a black one without the LSD and a Yellow one with it. I took the Yellow one out for about 15-20 minutes then came back and picked up my salesman to go for a ride. Then we came back and took the black one for a drive.

First impression. By far the most noticeable aspect of the car is the handling. It is very tight. I love the no-lift shift but am a bit concerned as there was severe bang into the next gear. I'm sure that some of this is simply getting a feel for the system and determining the best shift point. I was shifting just before hitting the rev-limiter. It was very fast. Not smooth, but fast.

Launch control was neat, but useless. I couldn't figure out a way to use launch control while disabling traction control. And with traction control engaged, dumping the clutch on launch control immediately results in excessive wheelspin which shuts the system down. The first time I did it I thought the car had stalled.

Using launch control in the car without the LSD was very much the same but, as expected, there was some noticeable torque steer.

I made a huge mistake before driving this car. I let my brother, who just purchased an EVO X, take me for a ride. I didn't think that it would have been that big of an issue, but he has already installed a cat back which was supposedly good for 30+hp. That car pulls hard. Amazingly so. The Cobalt doesn't feel nearly as fast, but I'm going to chalk it up to vehicle dynamics.

What I love about this car: Driving the Evo is much the standard fare. You learn the car, get a feel for its nuances and come to understand its characteristics... much as you would with any other car. Certainly it's fast and handles extremely well. But as with any other sports car you have a sense that you are piloting a vehicle. The Cobalt is much different. It weighs so much less. The first thing I realized when driving the Cobalt was that it didn't really feel like I was driving, but more like I had put on a suit. It really felt like I was wearing it and it became an extension of my body. I wasn't along for the ride, I was the ride. Big props to GM for this... they did an amazing job with the feel of this car.

BTW... the sales guy now has a clear understanding as to why the LSD is so important. He was the one who placed the order for these and he said that from here on out all of their cars would have the LSD.

If anyone is in the Kansas City area and is in the market for a SS/TC, Heartland Chevrolet in Liberty has a loaded Yellow one on the lot right now.

You're in the KC area? What part man? Hopefully things unfold nicely in the next couple of months so my SS/TC will be in my driveway before long. School is kicking my ass currently, but after things settle down, SS/TC it will be! I hate driving my shitty explorer around compared to my old SS lol
