View Full Version : Synapse Motorsport 3" downpipe

SynapseTurbo
07-08-2008, 01:39 PM
We just finished up our stainless steel 3" downpipe on our cobalt ss/tc. We cnc'd both flanges in house for precise fitment with the stock components. It also features a flex section to allow for engine movement and daily abuse. The downpipe removes the restrictive factory catalytic converters.

Morgan will be putting the car on the dyno later today, look for those results here.

features:

-direct replacement no modifications required
-removes catalytic converters
-made in the USA
-madrel bent for free flow
-simple to install
-dyno results soon to follow

Introductory Special $299 shipped for cobaltss.net members.

notes:
*due to the removal of the catalytic converter, this downpipe is for off road use only, and not legal for use on US roadways.*

tuning is still verrrrrryyyy limited....HP Tuners is working on the next update to be able to tune the TC tho which should allow the rear O2 sensor to be disabled.

Look closely at the pictures, the rear O2 bung is extended to avoid setting off the CEL associated with the cat.

correct me if I'm wrong but the PPC handheld tuner isnt a user adjustable tuning solution, it simply flashes a preprogrammed map. we would need something we can tune for our exact kit.

quoted from Hahn

"It's plug and go, with one highly developed program. End-user tuning is not supported at this time. The Bosch DI controller is a very exotic and hugely sensitive system that's not yet equipped with end-user friendly options. So, we take all the stumbling and guesswork out of it."

Here is the comparison graph from the stock downpipe to our downpipe still maintaining the stock catback exhaust/intake. As you can see there were consistant gains above 3500. With tuning I'm sure there are even more substantial gains to be had. We still have not had any check engine lights on the stock ECU for the secondary o2 sensor.

We do have some video footage i will try to get up later of the pulls and how the exhaust sounds(much better). Thanks for your interest in the downpipe. We will be selling these for an introductory special of $299 shipped. PM me for more information about downpipes with catalytic converters as i see many have shown interest in these.

Keep in mind the stock exhaust is not that restrictive. It is mandrel bent and has a straight through muffler design. The body of the muffler is large and has lots of packing to absorb sound and make the car quiet. That combined with the resonator and two cats make it really quiet. With our downpipe there is more sound but its not annoying or excessive.

why does it sound like that at the end theres like no rev limiter it just sounds weird braaaaaahhh

SynapseTurbo
07-18-2008, 10:51 AM
the engine doesnt actually hit rev limiter, the dyno stops the engine dead in its track at whatever rpm you give it for a range. if you set the upper limits beyond the redline then the motor will hit the rev limiter and the dyno will still try to read, so you would end up with a chart that looks like this. the dyno is still trying to read the decel looks like the dyno was waiting to reach 8600rpm, and the rev limiter kicked in at 8588.

Installed mine today, install was a bitch on jackstands. And the three bolt flange is also a pain in the ass. Love the sound too, It's LOUD when you get on it above 3500. But at idle, under 3500, and downshifting are all a tiny bit louder then stock, which is perfect and it has a nice quiet burble to it.

No need for a catback in all honesty, It's plenty loud for the cops to look at you the wrong way, but only if you let them see it.

And i also have a CEL, but i'm going to try an O2 simulator and see if that solves the problem.

Since the DP are throwing an o2 code on most that have been ordered, we are going to send all those who have already purchased one of our downpipes and those who do in the future with an o2 simulator in the kit.

I hope this helps everyone out, its a great part as far as sound, and performance and we would all like to see everyone as happy as possible with our products.

This one was one of the reasons i didn't order one, and was just going to wait until someone sold theirs used. Then i would make a trip to radio shack and make my own simulator.

They cost about $5.. its an extender. Cool that the vendor offers it free. Should have been included in the first place, tho.

i dont think there talking about an extender they specifically said O2 simulator it's a resistor you install to fool the computer into thinking the cat is.....

1. there
2. functioning properly
3. no more cel

yes it cost about 5 dollars to make it if you know how many hz you need and know how to solder,

but it's a little more reliable then thee old extender (sparkplug defouler)

so yes great vendor to offer that which they sell for around $20 on ebay, but good old GM decides to make there run off a different hz frequency so the ones on ebay wont work... been there tried that...

I dont see there being room for a turbo upgrade and fighting the ECM monsters to make it run reliably.

GM really put this car together so no one could tamper with it or do aftermarket upgrades other than themselves. Talk about cornering the market. Any how, this DP is supposedly good for 15\15 at the wheels? That's about 20\20 at the brake\ crank, That should be power you'll feel and see on the speedo\tach, but most have said it's just a sound change. 50 hp is the comon incriment used to calculate drops\quicker 0-60 mph and quarter times. I don't mean to deviate so much, but on my 2006 GTO they had the LS2 from the vett with 400\400. I threw some bolt-ons in and the power went to 448\440 my quarter mi dropped by half a sec and my 0-60 mph also went from about 4.9 sec to 4.5 sec. Same can be said about the SS\TC. the HPT and PPC add about 40-50 hp and people are runing half a sec faster if not more and 3-5 mph faster than stock as compared to the mags tests. Lots of people are telling me that a DP will make a noticable improvement in power from the mid and upper ends of the rpms. What do the rest of you think? I'm not adding exhausat as it's perfectly good till 360+ hp so I'm told. Feel free to add to this Synapse.

My dash hawk says I went from stock 0-60 in 5.68 sec with PPC it's 5.1 sec. with spinning tires, so say about 4.9 sec with some grip. This is huge. Keedp the goodies coming Synapse.

Keedp the goodies coming Synapse.

there are solstices and sky's running around with big turbo swaps and 400 + whp... hell theres a kit that brings it to 390 whp

^^^^^Now that would be nice!!! I know Synapse and Hahn are working on some goodies to that effect but? we'll see how they do. 400 whp with sticky tires in a sky\solst!!!!? that's = 2008 C6 Z06 level acceleration in a car that's about 190 lbs lighter than the Z0.

I may not be getting my car till very end September/early October. Just ordered it yesterday. Guess I'll order this now for the good price and leave it uninstalled until about 1000 miles lol.

synapse,

do you think your DP with an E-cutout welded in at the end will clear the underbody?

The tunnel on our cars aren't super wide, so it may, but would be very tight.
