View Full Version : ZZP Flex Pipe Breaking Info!!!
Werewolf SS 07-11-2008, 03:30 PM I just noticed another thread was deleted I assume for vendor bashing but since what I'm posting is actuall info on the subject for people I don't see this as a violation. If so then I will delete this thread or the mods.
The ZZP flex pipe breaking is starting to show up alot now and I have jsut gotten off the phone with ZZP as to this issue.
Here is info stratight from thier site:
**Due to the movement of the engine on WOT shifts, 1 or more solid engine/trans mounts will be required. If they are not used, then the flex sections warranty is voided.
I was told by ZZP they will warranty the downpipe if the flex pipe breaks on stock mounts once. Afterwards you have to have aftermarket mounts to be warrantied.
ZZP Recomends the Rear tranny mount above all else.
Enjoy! and please no bashing I don't want this thread locked or deleted.
ecotecon18s 07-11-2008, 03:52 PM Good to know bro...thats for the info...guess i know what the next mod will be
Werewolf SS 07-11-2008, 03:54 PM Yep!
I have my mounts filled I wonder if that counts as aftermarket?
Either way they're solid.
ecotecon18s 07-11-2008, 04:00 PM TTR was talking about a group buy for motor mounts...guess a bunch of the ZZP GB guys need to get on that to help keep their stuff in one piece...
RedBaseBolt 07-11-2008, 04:31 PM It's not our fault that the motors rock a lot...
Isn't the point of R&D to figure this kinda shit out BEFORE shipping a product?

i agree
elecblue06 07-11-2008, 04:46 PM this has nothing to do with zzp actually
the saturn motor sports midlength combo also has the issue.. it seems to be an issue with flex pipes/ midlegth combos... when i called saturn to get my combo installed initially they said the same thing zzp is saying now.. so far i've been fine but i'm getting tranny mounts now .. as i increase power more issues will arrive
Mr_Slobalt 07-13-2008, 10:07 PM that was my plan anyway
we used to have issues with the ZZP 3" DP on w-bodies hitting the front anti-swaybar and/or the firewall with stock mounts and sometimes even solid motor mounts.....this would damage the dp of course....the solution was to buy both solid lower motor mounts or flip the anti-swaybar
stock flexpipes on these cars break all the time from shifting hard and I'm surprised mine hasn't cracked with the stock mounts
ItalianJoe1 07-13-2008, 10:11 PM I've broken a couple flex pipes on aftermarket DPs, with full mounts. It happens.
Mr_Slobalt 07-13-2008, 10:13 PM yep, beating on a car will break shit whether it's aftermarket or OEM
just the way things work

I keep melting them
REIGN SS 07-13-2008, 10:15 PM IMO this "requirement" should apply to DP sold AFTER this announcement.
BostonBoy 07-13-2008, 10:20 PM So the stock one from GM has this issue too???
I know if I buy a new car & the downpipe fucks up they are changing it for free. This would come as bad design. Let them try to prove I beat on it with a perfect driving record for 7+ yrs.
Mr_Slobalt 07-13-2008, 10:28 PM I keep melting them  hmm yes I've seen your videos....lots of flameage

Yeah, the nitrous might have something to do with it as well. I didn't have this problem until I started spraying the car. The original flex on my C/A 3" was starting to leak when I added the nitrous, but it had completely blown out in short order after that. I've since blown out another Vibrant one, and a cheapo one used by some exhaust shop to replace that one. I've spent almost as much replacing flex pipes as I did on the original DP itself
BooSSted 07-13-2008, 10:44 PM **Due to the movement of the engine on WOT shifts, 1 or more solid engine/trans mounts will be required. If they are not used, then the flex sections warranty is voided.**
Well that is absolutely bullshit!! The whole reason you put the god damn flex pipe in is because the engine moves. How can they say that they are going to void the warranty when you are using their product on the engine that it was MADE for??? I am really beginning to regret going with ZZP for my Header/DP. So far it has been the worst online buying experience I have had in the last 5 years. BTW, it has now been 15 days since I sent them my money and I have still heard nothing in return.
Sythen1678 07-14-2008, 03:18 AM HAHA i have a both solid engine, tranny mounts and ingals engine dampner and mine busted up. ive gone through 3 ZZP Dp's and still waiting on everything to ship!!! 3 months my car is out of service!!!!!!!!!!!!

i did that too, but, honestly, i'm so glad that i eventually coughed up for the TTR ones.
Zooomer 07-16-2008, 05:34 PM The flex issue happens a lot because we sell a lot of downpipes. Initially we didn't know why it was happening but then discovered a lot of breakages even on stock downpipes. Any time you add power to a car, it can cause issues that have to be worked around. Add a lot of power, axles have to be changed, change the axles, the clutch needs to be upgraded. Similar here. Add power and you need mounts.

So what about when you have solid tranny and engine mounts and engine dampener and still bust your dp?
07blackg5 07-20-2008, 04:15 PM is this so much of a problem on 2.2's. i know the engine still rocks a lot, but its definatly not the power of a modded 2.0.

Cases like this have to be taken on a case by case basis. Most likely a defective part that has to be waranted.

It happens with the gm "accordion" flex pipe as well but wasn't related to power but vibration (so the mounts are probably the cause); happened BEFORE I got stage 2 and was stock...I haven't had a problem with vibrants mesh type flex unit...may want to talk to them about this.
Stouffer 07-20-2008, 06:00 PM OK mine still borke with an Ingalls and both tranny mounts. They should design knowing how much the engine moves.

I'm not sure what design is possible to prevent breaking...if they make the dp solid you're going to have a ton of problems with the flanges at the head/dp and dp/cat back.
Zooomer 07-31-2008, 04:41 PM My guys found a flaw in the manufacturing process of the mid length downpipe that was corrected. I don't know when it was implimented but here is the situation.
http://www.zzperformance.com/miscftp/IMG_6840.jpg
We were welding the flexes to the flange and this meant that only the red portion was welded to the flange. Failures could then occur when the ring broke off of the flex. Now we weld them to pipe so that the blue and red portions get welded and then weld the pipe to the flange.
We are changing our warranty on this product to 2 years for people that already bought it, we will pay for return shipping of pipes that break and for people that had to pay shipping already, we will issue you a coupon code to our site. I apologize for the potential issue, for the people that have experienced failures and appreciate the chance to continue serving the community with improved products.
springerdesigner 07-31-2008, 04:44 PM so the warranty is good for two years from the time we purchased it correct..?
Werewolf SS 07-31-2008, 04:50 PM Zooom your the best!
Mine was shipped out the 25th of July, was the new process implemented for this batch?
And is thier a way to check?
Thanks!
Zooomer 07-31-2008, 05:07 PM The old ones have the flex right to the flange, the new ones have 2" of pipe in between. 2 year warranty on the ones with flex to the flange from date of purchase.
