Before i get my ZZP Header/DP installed i wanted to make sure i didnt need to buy an extra header gasket since the combo doesnt come with one...Ive read that you could use the stock header gasket but im not sure how that would work, since wouldnt the stock header and my new 1.5" ZZP header be different sizes?

do you guys recommend just keeping the stock one on or buying a new one? How much would it cost from a dealership?

I bought another gasket just incase the other one is messed up, the gasket it 14 bucks from the gm dealership but honestly since i already have the headers installed i dont think ill ever install the new gasket. The part number is Gm#9230949 Have them check this just incase

i asked whether the new headers would fit with the stock header gasket since ZZP doesnt provide one and if it didnt, why would i wait until i get everything installed ot be told to go to the dealship and have to get a new gasket..Id like to be prepared.

And please dont call me a cheap noob...Im 17 years old and paying for everything that goes into my car, payments, insurance, and any mods i have including the ZZP header/DP which cost me $450, the cat back im buying in two weeks for $350.

okay... and like i said, instead of finding out i need a new gasket in the middle of installing the thing, and having to rush to the dealership, id like to be prepared for something i might need to buy extra before hand.

I really didnt care if i needed to buy a new gasket for it or not and whether it cost $10 or $75, i wouldve got it either way...No where in either of my posts did i say i wouldnt dish out the money for a gasket if someone recommended i got one which made me get a little po'd at your post. It was a simple question just so i knew i could goto the installation prepared and not have to worry about any confusion half way through it,

Just as a heads up, I always replaced gaskets, screws all that fun stuff. Just because stock stuff once removed seems like its crap, I mean its not always the case, but after so many mods and breaking stock bolts on friends cars, I started with always replacing new peices. My advice to you! and good luck with the install.

The stock exhaust mani gasket is MLS, and its 100% re-usable unless you damage it. They are excellent gaskets and work flawlessly as long as you torque the manifold down correctly, which is necessary for any flange gasket to seal.

They are cheap though, and having a spare just in case you do damage the stock one isn't the worst idea, but I don't think you will have a problem, I didn't.

The gasket is more than fine as far as port clearance on the header. If anything, the ports in the head are the smallest point.

the manifold gasket is not a cheap "paper" style gasket, it's made of copper (i think) and can be reused unless it's damaged.

Its not copper, its 'MLS' or Multi Layer Steel, made of a spring steel alloy, similar to a head gasket construction but more simple.

and btw, are you talking about that same mechanic that tells you that you need a new air filter? even though you just replaced it? or the one that says your new oil is dirty? or that you need new heater hoses? the ones that are pretty much trained to sell you crap you don't need? yea, thought so.

So do you assume that every GM mechanic has actual knowledge and experience with this area? I don't doubt that some do, but I have met several ASE cert'd GM techs that I wouldn't trust to change my oil, much less actually value thier opinion on parts.

I have torque sheets for all parts got them the day my friends snapped his exhaust bolts. And I use em anytime I ever mod. So I am well aware.

well now you're also aware that if the manifold gasket is not damaged, you don't have to replace it.

other gaskets in the exhaust i would def. replace though. like manifold to downpipe, and downpipe to catback

i've done 3 exhausts on my cobalts, and about 6-7 other headers and/or full exhaust on other peoples cars. and never once had a leak from the manifold, and also never once replaced the gasket.

i'll trust my experience, over someone who takes the car to the shop to "get what they want done"
