In more unfortunate news, the Chevrolet Cruze, set to debut in Paris and sold in Europe next year, won't be replacing the Cobalt in the U.S. anytime soon. Lutz maintains that the current Cobalt is "no where near the end of its life-cycle" and that it's "finally coming into its own" in the U.S. market. When the Cruze does debut, expect an interior that's a cross between the Cobalt and the Malibu, and powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-pot that will get 40+ mpg.

The Cobalt does not have a next generation planned. Once they stop making it, you only have the Cruze.

Despite not offering the Beat in America, Lutz made some great points (i.e. about the Saturn brand)

Glad to see the Cobalt is sticking around. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade from my base model before GM does away with it.

Cruze is slated for 2011 MY with a mid-2010CY production date, and remember he said REPLACE. Meaning more than likely the Cobalt will be sold aside the Cruze as a cheap alternative.

The release article for the Chevy Cruise was worded in a way that indicated it would not replace the Cobalt, and simply be offered along side it. But, the internet exploded with miss-information and the whole deal went out of wack.

Oh well... gotta say those new Cruze pictures are shaping up to be a keeper... and I'm a little disapointed the Cobalt won't see a refresh for "quite some time". Don't get me wrong, I love the exterior of this car, but the interior is just a complete mess...

I figured it wouldn't replace the Balt. For one: the cruze wouldn't be that popular anyways. Although Americans hate seeing the prices at the pump, they are NOT ready to en masse to make their cars small as hell. There is a reason why there are not huge amounts of Smart Cars and Priuses completely clogging the road.

What I think will happen is that the Aveo will go back to Korea and the Cruze will take its place in order to hopefully gain more success than the Aveo did.

That's not even just GM that does it. All automotive brands (american) have been replacing their model designs within 6 years for a while now. It's part of their attempt to draw away from the imports. Unfortunately for them, the imports have followed suit.

Come to think of it.. GM has really done visual refreshes on all their cars in the last 3-4 years.

True, Cobalts are wicked on the outside, but most people that get into mine comment on the interior :thumbsdow

The Cruze is a neat concept, I hope it works out for them. Most of the people around me are hypermiling lunatics, so if they market it right sales should do pretty well.

i dunno about the interior issues... because, honestly, EVERY car in the class i've sat in has parts of the interior that are cheap plastic. honda, toyota, nissan, ford, all of them.

Heh, yeah, I almost bought a base model Mustang, but the interior and an anti-Ford friend turned me away :lol: Personally, I like keeping it simple, cheaper to fix when the drunken screwball you're driving home drags his/her shoe across your door/interior.

The wheel and the shifter feel good and that's about all that really matters.

I gotta agree with Joe on this one. I was stuck in an '08 Lancer rental for a while when my car was in the shop back in Washington... and that had to be the crappiest interior I have ever seen on a "New" car.

Have you seen the interior on the Civics? Its got to be the ugliest thing Ive driven in awhile. I work at Honda and even they make fun of it. The outside isnt any better.

Having been to Japan and seen what they have there I think the Cruze would fit Asia much better than the US.
