All automatic cobalts please post you 1/4 mile times and mods when you ran those times. I will not be able to post mine until april 8th when my local track opens, but i think this will be a useful thread for us to refer to since most times you hear of are for the 5 speeds. :cssNET:

wow, so if you used 93 octane, 1/4 tank of gas, and you are probably around the same elevation as me that could mean low 15's huh?

definitely low 15's. automatics are supposed to run 15.2 while manuals are supposed to run 15 flat.....i am no longer stock (all i have is a SRI as you know) so the track opends up Feb. 25th here and I will be running on March 1st so we shall see

15.8 sounds waaaay to fast for an auto. I'm not doubting though. I just wish we lived closer so I could race ya ;)

i am surprised how well gm mated the auto to the 2.4 it seems to be pretty effective as far as autos go and u gotta love intermediate mode

the first run i left it in "D" and just floored it off the line (15.92) and the second run I when i put it in "L" to disengage the t/c and once again floored it off the line and shifted manually into "D" and got the (15.81) also take note that not once did i "heat up my tires" by doing burn outs or going through the water pit...just rolled up to the tree and went

when you say u went from L to D does that mean you skipped over I? If so that may be a reason why you didnt go faster becasue I is supposed to be a better gear to leave it in for 2nd and 3rd since it shifts harder and goes closer to redline.

actually on my 3rd run i did go into "I" and ran another 15.9 so i'm not too sure about that but who know's only have had 3 runs with her so i guess she'll be a track whore this year to do some experimenting with things and we'll find out...i'm thinking that these transmissions today are so advanced that i'm sure they make up for certain things....i might just try all the different ways tonight see which "feels" better

celicacobalt

ok so on your best run you launch and redlined it in L, then skipped over I into D? is this right? and did the trany seem to have any problem skipping I to go into D?

when in "L" it actually shifts one more time...so i let it shift and waited until red line and then shifted it up to "D"....and the tranny seemed to take it like a champ...meaning i felt no problems when doing it

wait now im confused, L is gear 1 and 2? i thought L was only 1st then you had to shift to I or D, so then is I 3 gears?

honestly i haven't messed with it enough to really know (only those 3 runs at the track) but when you start off in "L"...it gets to red line and then shifts and once that goes to redline i usually just push it to "D" so definitely gonna do some experimenting tonight hopefully and let ya' know what goes on exactly with all those damn letters and numbers....lol

Not everyone has that option available to them, Hutch for example has a blown left knee so a manual isn't practical. celicacobalt had to buy an auto because his wife wouldn't go for a manual.

Personally I will never own another automatic. I despise them, I drove one for 7 years and hated it, but I had no say in buying that car so I took what I was given and didn't complain. When I got the SS/SC I was paying for it myself so I got what I wanted above the bitching from my grandparents about how impractical it was for me to own it and how miserable driving a manual is. But I love it, it was easy to learn, and most important it's MY car and it's what I want. To each their own.

if i would have been allowed to get a manual trust me i would have but being married we have to make comprimises but im still happy none the less since i belive gm mated this auto well with the 2.4

I would have gotten a manual myself, as my last car was a 5 spd Alero. But it just wasn't practicall for me at the time.

i would have loved to get a manual... my job however involves multi=tasking while driving, so it wouldn't be practical

Cobalt443

the goat is a manual and the cobalt is the grocery getter of the driveway so it wasn't really needed and i like the auto

an auto is nothing to hate a car over, its slower most of the time, but not a reason to hate

the automatic GTO is actually quicker than the stick......the fastest transmission in the world is on an automatic BMW.......with today's technology owning an automatic is no laughing matter except when we pull up to someone in a manual whom doesn't know how to drive and run faster than them because of it

In a 4-cyl it was!!!!!!! I loved everything about my Cavalier except the tranny. I even had the "top-of-the-line" 4-speed auto and it still sucked. So I guess I really didn't hate the car overall, but the auto really hurt the fun factor.

damn that still doesn't help us much though....well the market is still new so i'm sure much will be developed over the span of the car

ahh things always get changed around in topics...especially since not many people have had their 2.4's to the track...oh yea i forgot to tell you.....the best my base 2.2 ever ran was a 16.5 bone stock with a 1/2 tank of 87......

celicacobalt
02-03-2006, 04:39 PM
so there is about a 1 second difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 then i guess, also yeah it still is a 1/4 mile thread i guess until we can make a better more organized one when times are widely available lol

when I race from the line I put it into "L" then I go, and at 5500rpm I shift into "I" for 2nd and 3rd and by then the race is usually over.

no, you dont have t/c on 5 speed you would know cuz when you launch it kills your engine power

OK I went to the dealer and told them about it, and they basically explained to me what the abs does and that with the light on what can happen. I fell asleep when he was telling me this, and he said they can check it for 30 bucks. I was like thats ok I'll just take it to school and me and my friend can put it on the computer there.

my best time was 16.5 in my stock 2.2. now with my 2.4 hmm im very curious on what it will do. currently i have a injen CAI, and a good hptuners tune. next step will be ss/sc injectors and wideband to tune a/f. then my exhaust will go underway and mounts for the car.
