drmotorhead 07-23-2008, 12:42 AM Within a couple of days I am buying either a Cobalt SS or a GTI with DSG. I can chip the GTI and get around 255hp and 300 tq. The GTI is nicer inside but the Cobalt is a better performer. For me, hp make all the difference, as either way this will be the slowest car I have owned in 10 years. Anyone know what we can expect from the LNF with the basic upgrade of chip/intake/catback?

I love the GTI's... but what you have to consider is that a Cobalt is gonna weigh in around 3000lbs w/ driver and a full tank, while the GTI will be around 3200lbs.

csementuh 07-23-2008, 10:45 AM Yes to get back on topic... My vote is the SS/TC... I am biased towards Chevy and have always disliked VW's. IMO they are way too small inside. I drove one a couple times and was just horribly unimpressed. I say go with the SS because it is brand new and the aftermarket (what tiny one there is) is already starting to look impressive. If I had to do it all over again though, I would have bought a G35 before my SS/SC...

EVO X > Cobalt SS/TC but it also costs 10k more... So if you can afford it, definitely go for it... But the discussion was for a GTI or a Cobalt SS/TC
I like both cars....
which car will perform better.. That's hard to tell. Base performance the Cobalt SS/TC has more HP and more torque... But all you have to do is spend 400-600 on an APR tune or whatever and you will get the GTI in and over stock Cobalt SS/TC territory... But I believe once the mods really start coming out since the Cobalt SS/TC has more stock HP (which always doesn't mean anything) so in the end I see it being the better performer...
Also on autocross/auto X, track days, HPDE events, the Cobalt SS/TC > GTI
Now weight, yeah Cobalt SS/TC weighs in just under 3k lbs w out driver, the GTI weighs over 3000lbs...
Interior? Hmm I'd go with the GTI, although I hate those cloth seats... Go with leather...
Cost? well compare the base prices Cobalt SS/TC, $22,995 with it fully loaded, sun roof, high rise spoiler, LSD, you are looking high 23's low 24's... For a VW it can get up in the mid to high 20's
Also factor depreciation and cost to maintain if you are buying it for the long run... the Cobalt will depreciate faster.. But the parts on a VW being foreign will be more expensive and both cars don't have the best reputation for quality...
So it's all based on your tastes... Which will be the better performer? Well depends on how much you want to do to it... You could swap out the turbo and go bigger eventually on both cars and you're looking at some good HP. Go with what you want.
Oh I forgot that you said you were getting a DSG in the GTI, that alone would make it stock more expensive then a Cobalt SS/TC (I think)... That also sorta changes things... You'll get quicker times with the DSG compared to a stick... but where's the fun in driving that to gain a couple tenths of a second?

agreed. Then where I would take it is, there is always more power to be had. Usually upgrading power isnt to costly especially when you are set up for forced induction already. The interior on the other hand and how comfortable a car is isnt that easy to change in most cases, also not very cheap
rocco11189 07-23-2008, 02:07 PM Go over to the vortex forums and go into the 2.0T section and look at the power some of these guys are making just by chipping their cars. I would rather have a new cobalt but the aftermarket for the vdubs is really good and you can out down some strong numbers.

Also, after driving my SS/TC and then driving the GTI, I felt like I wasn't going anywhere in the GTI :(. Good luck on your choice and enjoy your new car!

Unless GM SERIOUSLY FUDGES the staged kits for the cobalt ss/tc we should be seeing 300whp within 1-2 years max from GMPP and WITHIN WARRENTY........tell me again why you think the GTI is going to be faster?? Oh, and.......slowest car owned in 10 years.......so u've only owned 9second cars huh?? U just wait till GMPP drops their stage kits for the cobalt ss/tc, add the enhanced handling and I think this cobalt ss/tc will be greatly changing your mind about how it's the "slowest car you've owned in 10 years"

Aftermarket support is huge for the GTI but big turbo kits run up to 4K and up. The EVO should not even be mentioned, it should be compared to STI's and 335i.

Interior is so much nicer it's not even funny. The pedal placement in the Cobalt SUCKS, its perfect in the GTI, but your considering DSG so that is kind of a non-issue. The steering wheel in the GTI is so nice, SS wheel is too thin, cheap pleather too. The HID lights are very bright, Cobalt lights FTL.
Overall GTI is much more refined, SS will have a slight performance edge. SS depreciation is aweful, exact opposite in the GTI. Over 4-5 years, GTI will cost you less IMO. 09 GTIs come with 3 years free maintenance. The NAV in 09 GTIs is awesome, on par with the system in the Cadillac CTS!
End of the day, if you want to race around all the time, get the SS, if you prefer more refinement and luxury get the GTI.
