High RPM Shifting seems to be neutral

Hello, I have always been reviewing these forumns but have now become a member. I have an imperial Blue Cobalt SS/TC, first in Omaha, got it June 6. I have taken it out to a road course track in IOWA (Mid America Motoplex) and the car handles unbelievable. Something happened last friday, was not shifting very hard, but all of a sudden when I shift up in gears at or above 5000 rpm and I release the clutch it seems like I am in neutral, if I let the RPM go down more the gears engage and I can go, mainly 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (of course I have not tested 5th). Anybody have any thoughts on this or know of this situation.

is the No Lift Shift Feature waiting for you to shift? That's what it sounds like

pop the shifter boot off and see if your shifter cables are out of the brackets

This does it on any mode, I have tried the NO lift Shift, which I used sucessfully before, but it still does it but only when the RPMs are higher the 5000 when I shift. I asked someone that I knew, and he said the clutch is probably a diaphram clutch and sometime it happens with race cars that the RPMs are to high and will not allow the clutch to engage.

Are you scared to goto the service side of your dealership or something?? The car comes with warrenty for a very good reason, and this happens to be one of them.

It sounds like you may have glazed your clutch and just need to recondition it with some regular and aggressive trans braking.

Well I did a little more testing on my drive home from work and it is only in 2nd and 4th, I thought I tried 3rd before, but it worked. Basically I am over 5000 rpms and shift to 2nd and then Its like neutral, I let the RPM down to 2000 and still nothing until I put the clutch back in and release it, then it takes.

I dont think the dealer would cover that anyway. Its a clutch thats a wear item. And thats exactly what they would say.

And for the OP yea i have the same problem to, but thats only when i tried to bang 2nd gear really fast, if i shift semi-slow or at a decent speed it will take

If its only 2nd/4th, its either in the shifter or trans. I'd see if the cable is tweaked or something, it might have been stretched if you were banging on it while racing, just need to readjust it if thats the case.

Its definetly not clutch wear, that is for sure, it grabs just fine off the line and if I let it get into 2nd or 4th and punch it, it goes like normal, no slipping. I have been driving manuals for 18 years of my life, I did not glaze the clutch. I probably will check the linkage, but I definetly do not want to take things apart if they void the warranty.

Ive driven standards for years, but never actually owned one, so Im new to the terms. What exactly clutch glaze? When you ride out the clutch or something?

I am about to go put a down payment on an 08 SS/TC this thursday. This scares me a bit. I am sure most new SS/TC owners get on the throttle more then a bit once the engine and car is broken in. Is the clutch/tranny system on this car Fed up or what? Recall?

You should realize that for every one person on this site complaining about issues, there are 100 out there who have not had any issues.

Why would people start a thread that says "My car is running perfectly! I have not ruined the clutch and have full boost!"

Found out what happened, the connection point at the transmission for the cable was busted, its going to take 5 days to get in, covered under warranty, but will not be covered if it happens again. The bad thing is the tech messed with it more and now I have no 2nd, 4th, or even reverse until tuesday/wednesday. I should have got a rental car, but I decided for right now to skip shift for now. Found out an interesting little fuel saver though, in 5th gear, a little under 50mph, I was actually getting 45mpg on flat road.
