SS Model?
Um no thats a joke. I guess you could to it but like I said it would probably be like 7,000 or more after all the mods. Its not worth it. Just buy a beater and practice driving a stick for about 3-6 months and then get an SS S/C. Trust me you dont want an auto in this kind of car. GM didnt offer one for a reason man.
I look at it like this, if you cant drive a stick shift you should not be driving a car that is this fast.
I drove the 2.4 auto and was not realy impresed with it my self. (But im a speed junky). The sales people at the dealer I got my car at had an SS 2.4, they said the raced it agenst a base 2.2L 5-speed and said that they where almost dead even.
Its up to you man but I would get the 5-speed car.

I have a orange 06 SS 2.4 Auto...I also have a 2003 Cavalier that has the 2.2 in it. It blows the cavalier away...but like someone said it doesn't have the force and power near as the Superchaged SS. I wanted a superchaged one, but one..I don't know how to drive stick. And 2, insurance is a killer! My auto 2.4 ss is 330 a month for full coverage..and thats with a 1,000 deductable. I could only think what the insurance on the SS S.C would run me...but I'm 19, male, and I've had about 7 tickets...sorry..but I love speed.....

I don't know why they haven't made the auto available with the SS/SC, I guess most people want the extra perfomance and gas mileage of the stick. But for bracket racing at the dragstrip the auto is better. GM even uses an auto behind the record setting turbo/nitrous sportcompact drag racing cobalt and sunfire eco cars at the dragstrip.
There's no SS/SC Automatic b/c Americans are stuck in this rut... they think that it's not a performance car unless it has a stick... There are really a lot of other transmissions out there... SMG... sport-tronic (tip-tronic) whatever you wanna call it... CVT... but GM is just stuck in manual or auto mode... that's all...

As for professional drag racing, thats a whole different ballgame. Those cars are so fast that the driver wouldn't even have time to shift before the engine hit redline and the next gear needed to be selected. The automatic shifts precisely and consistantly, which is what you want when you're running 1000+HP and 8 second 1/4 miles.
To the author of this post: Go with the manual trans, you won't regret it. Not only is it cheaper to buy in the first place, but its much more fun to drive compared to the auto. Its not that hard to learn, just ask a friend who has a car with a manual to give you some basic pointers/training. You'll have a car thats much more fun to drive, respods better to mods (if you ever want to add any), gets better fuel economy, and best of all its faster
I have a friend from Nepal (India region) and he cant understand why i want a manual tranny when i can have an auto. Its because i want complete controle over my tranny, it gets better gas milage and i already know how to drive a stick. I learned on a 94 silverado!
now thats fun to drive!
yeah if you want an auto consider the 2.2 over the 2.4. i test drove the auto 2.4 and it just felt bland, not much difference from the auto 2.2.

Personally I'm not a fan of the 2.4 version of the SS. Like others have said it feels flat to me, even with a manual tranny. Drive the 2.4 in the stick, if it's fast enough to suit your needs then go for it but don't be scared off by a manual. I love mine, it's a thousand times more fun to drive than an auto. I don't ever regret buying my car, even with all the times I stalled it in traffic while learning to drive. It's all part of the process and I think everyone should learn to drive both trannies, then you can drive anything!

What's the point in putting an expensive high performance auto tranny in a cheap car? It wouldn't sell. In addition it really does take away from the driving experience. If you want all that crappy computer stuff then buy a fancy car. Easier to drive is not better.
you dont want an auto in any 4cyl car its just too slow and I absolutly love the fact that gm didnt make the sc model in an auto. the one thing they did right. my wife has never driven a manual car until we got the ss/sc and now after 6 months she never stalls shifts damn near pefect and im bringing her to the track on sat.
i think if the ss/sc had an auto it would sell very good seeing as all the poepl want it with the auto, gm didnt put the auto in it since the auto would be at its limit with handling the s/c power and it would be a liability and gm was too lazy to make another tranny to handle that power available to the ss, if they mated a 5 speed auto to the ss/sc the stick would only be slighlty faster
