Why blowing up your car can be cool.

This past Saturday i grenaded the transmission in my SS/SC. The case is cracked, fluid is coming from the bottom of the bell housing and from the diff housing. Looks like i blew up the diff first which then sent shrapnel into the rest of the tranny taking that out and binding up the whole transmission and clutch so the car would not start. There is a visible 1x3" whole in the diff housing where i can reach in a feel all kinds of little pieces of sheared gears and tranny housing. It sucks because i have to buy a new tranny and clutch kit. Oh well. Gotta pay to play, right?

Here is some pics of the carnage from the place i broke down at on Saturday night.

So, why is it sometimes cool to blow up your car? Well, when you work for a speed shop, there are certain fringe benifits to working at such a place. So, what kind of benifits do you ask? For starts, the boss wanting me to be able to show up to work everyday let me borrow a car. What kind of car do you ask? His 98 LS1 Vette.

wait....whats that in there....is that an intercooler?.....

wouldn't you know, looks like another intercooler!

And here it is! Turbo LS1 FTMFW!!!!

I have the best job ever. But i still need a new transmission!

You have no idea. There is no cats or mufflers. Just the turbo to keep the exhaust note down

So i tow the car down and leave it with him. They were going to try and be sneaky and he was going to say that the tranny blew up out of normal wear and tear and not abuse.

So he opens up a job ticket for the transmission and automatically GM flags it. There is a bulletin out about SS/SC differentials blowing up and a GM rep is automatically called out to inspect the car to determine if the car was damaged by abuse. Basically, i had no chance in hell. So before it got to the point where the rep was going to come out, my buddy canceled the ticket and told me to get my car. Its shitty i don't have a shot at a warranty, but if the GM rep said i beat the **** out of my car he would have flagged my car and killed the rest of my warranty.

It was a shot in the dark anyways.

Now back to the topic at hand: I'm driving a turbo Vette and you are not
It has a built auto trans, some kind of motor work, fully built suspension, and the turbo is pumping out 10psi. Boss said its good for around 550whp.

Well, it was either that or a 68 firebird, a 54 chevy truck with 18" lift, built BBC, and 40" tires on 22" rims.

I think i chose wisely.

There is also a shop S-10 pick up that is our parts runner. I would normally drive that but we are installing a smooth roll pan, smooth tail gate, and i just got done putting in a 4/6 drop on it.

I've still got a Transmission (or 2) for you.

Does your friend's dealership have the special tools to tear one apart?

My current one does. The 2 in my garage do not.

I have 2 other Transmissions. #1 has a bad synchronizer. #2 did the exploding Diff trick, just like the OP... only not quite that severe.

Tranny #1 is perfect other than the Synchro. I visually inspected it myself. And that synchro can be had from Trans #2. So, in a sense... I have a good transmission sitting in my garage... it just needs a little bit of labor.

Sorry man. For me, i'm looking for a complete good transmission that will require no work. I'm going to dump the car as soon as its all back together and running.

why would the dealer warranty your transmission? When you are trying to be sneaky and all. That's bullshit. My clutch warranty was voided on my BONE STOCK car from the dealer saying that the front tires were too worn down compared to the rear tires. Obviously if you are modded ALOT, you shouldn't really have a warranty at all. Except for maybe on your interior. lol.

I do understand what you are saying. I did realize all of this when i bought the car and modified it as such. Tell me, if you blew up your transmission and could have a chance at getting it replaced at no cost to you, would you do it? I knew i would have no chance in hell at getting this replaced to for me under warranty. I never thought about it twice until my friend said he would like to try. was i wrong for trying? maybe. Am i paying for it now? Absolutely. Can you say you wouldn't try the same thing?
