Does Amsoil even make a filter for our cars? Their website mentions a Wix part number for the Cobalt.

Fram everytime i've ever changed the oil on any car i've ever owned.

I will use what came on the car... GM= AC Delco. If I have a FFFFFFFord (I can't even SAY that word!), I'de use Motorcraft etc... Any Chrysler product,, I would not change it. The investment in a filter would be more than the car is worth.

i worked at jiffy lube, the only diffrence in filters is the name, i go with fram for the easy grip removal, weve used penzoil, fram, acdelco, and amsoil if you want the jacked up price, the only diffrence really is if you put a diffrent size on you car, a ford taurus can use a pz-09 or pz-42, filters are filters

I use AC Delco PF457G purchased from my friendly neighborhood SATURN dealer and inside the box is the same OEM Hengst ENERGETIC (http://www.hengst.de/conpresso/_rubric/index.php?rubric=Automotive_Aftermarket__Quality_E N) filter as used when our cars were built by the factory. I've noticed that not all AC Delco PF457G boxes have these. Visually, these filters look very well made and I prefer them to those brands made in Bulgaria or Taiwan.

Made in the U.S.A. :usa: Buy American!

I've heard a lot of people say that. Fram filters are junk (the regular ones anyway) and I would never risk an engine by running one.

Wix and Amsoil are in kahoots in putting filters together for Amsoil. But, if its not an Amsoil part#, it's a wix part only.

How do you know what is actually IN the AC-Delco box until you open and examine the filter? Is the outside of the box (writing) any different? Or do you physically have to open the box and look inside? Thanks!!

I use Puralator cause they are Free. I have a friend that works for them and she says that Puraltor makes damn near everyone's filters. Fram makes AC Delco and K&N. Puralator's are made in the USA in NC. Fram has a plant in NV.

That's my point; the dude recommends Amsoil filters on a car forum where there is no Amsoil part number for our car. Its Wix (an excellent filter BTW).

Your friend is probably thinking of Champion Labs. They make filters for many, many different brands, but not for Purolator.

I run Purolator Pure One if I change the oil. AC Delco if I'm lazy and have the dealer change the oil. I stay away from FRAM, my buddy had a FRAM on his 200SX and it sucked that thing flat and starved it for oil. Can you POP goes the motor!

I posted a picture of a AC delco filter and fram filter side by side . They are noticably different. The plastic nub on an the bottom of the fram filter is shorter than the AC , and with the fram in my car , it ticked alot longer on cold startup.

Yep. If I were at an Autozone or someplace I'd pop it open and look. Saturn dealer has the Hengst filters in an AC DELCO box. Saturn part # 12605566. They use to package in a Saturn box so I guess they save some coin using the AC DELCO box. List price $4.80 each. Can't beat the price for the quality. Saturn sells the more generic version in bulk wrap so make sure you check the box for the Hengst product before you pay!

I am at a Pontiac dealer, and I have yet to finad anything other than an American Hengst product in a PF457G box..... You shouldnt have to go to saturn dealer. Any ACDelco PF457G should be American at this point

AMSOIL doesn't make a filter for the SS/SC.

Are you referring to WIX?

I'm sorry...filter doesn't do anything special regardless of brand. If metal shavings are that much of an issue just get a magnetic drain plug.

Here are the Pure One and the AC Delco filters side by side.

If I understand it correctly, the O-ring on the nipple keeps the filter (and housing) full of oil while the engine is off, to prevent dry starts. Unscrewing the filter and cap far enough "pops the cork" so to speak and allows the oil contained in the filter to drain back into the block. Exactly how far that nipple extends into the casting shouldn't matter as much as the diameter of the O-ring; a too-small O-ring will allow the oil to drain and cause dry starts. GM issued a TSB asking techs to check for O-ring distortion or missing O-rings if customers complain of noise at startup.

Always lube the O-ring with oil before installing a new filter to prevent distorting it (does the how-to on this site mention that?). The O-ring fits pretty snugly and could become damaged or dislodged if installed dry.

Here's the pic from awhile ago. there are alot of differences, the fram is on the left and of course is used . I'm talking about changes in the plastic frame.

Do you have any pics of the interior of the PF457G? I noticed the Wix and AC filters have smaller plastic frames and much larger interior openings. I returned my Fram because I didn't want the engine starved of oil.
