View Full Version : new garrett turbo kit info
celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 02:08 PM i just received this from garrett after asking some questions.
my question:
how is the cobalt turbo kit project going? any specific eta on when i can purchase it? any preliminary numbers? will it be for the 2.2 and the 2.4 engines? thanks.
garrett response:
Thank you for your interest in the Cobalt turbo kit! I wish that I could give you specifics on all of your questions, but I can only answer a couple of them. I cannot give a specific ETA for the kit, but I can assure you that we are hard at work and ensuring that the same quality that goes into each Garrett Turbocharger is going into the turbo kit.
The kit is being designed for the 2.2 L Ecotec engine. I have included a pdf of the flyer that was distributed at SEMA with the specifications that we are, at this time, releasing to the public. Sorry I can’t be any more detailed at this time.

celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 02:15 PM thanks for merging the threads
celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 02:16 PM so im hoping the 2.4 will be able to use this as well but we will have to see
HackAbuse 03-01-2006, 02:48 PM Anyone wanna lend me a couple thousand bucks? :twothumbs
celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 03:39 PM just keep saving up, so far i have saved up $2500 at this point
DC52NV 03-01-2006, 04:33 PM merged the other thread to this one.
r@z0r 03-01-2006, 06:14 PM DROOL! I wonder if they are going to have different stage kits, or just the one above... It would also be nice to know what kinda of boost range they are going to be capable of...
I've got a lot of work to do to be ready for this one....
importkiller 03-01-2006, 06:23 PM the "disco potato" turbo itself is capable of producing 350 hp, so what you will need to do is spend some money on the internals and get a new boost controler hopefully a nice electronic one that you can change on the fly. Then you will be cruzin with the srt4's!
celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 06:31 PM this kit is pretty damn nice but i dont think ill be able to take advantage of it.
r@z0r 03-01-2006, 06:52 PM Eh..I would prefer to EAT SRT'4's rather than cruise with them....
I'm not all too familiar with the process of prepping engine internals for large boosting applications...so if I were to look for some help on what I need to buy and such...would Jegg's be a possibility? or would that be a mistake hehe
celicacobalt 03-01-2006, 08:28 PM i dont think jegs would be able to help you, they cater more to muscle cars, if anyone can help you as far as a vendor goes i would contact turbotech racing. this kit will help you to eat them but only after internals and tranny and a boost controller to up the boost.
importkiller 03-02-2006, 01:38 PM Take a look at the GM build book for the cobalt. It has part numbers and venders for all the parts you will need to take your cobalt all the way to pro drag car! I am only interested in the up to 350 hp section though:)
celicacobalt 03-02-2006, 03:32 PM i dont remeber them hitting on how to tune the cobalt though since we have no aftermarket ecu, are we supposed to go to gm for a custom tune on the stock computer or what?
CobaltCowboy 03-02-2006, 03:39 PM this is gonna be my kit to get.
celicacobalt 03-02-2006, 03:47 PM looks real nice i just wish they had one for the 2.4 since we cant use this piggyback that comes with it since our computers are different

does any one kno a price range for the turbo?
celicacobalt 03-03-2006, 12:03 AM nope but im gonna guess in the ball park of $4000.00
r@z0r 03-03-2006, 06:35 AM yeh around $4k would be a good estimate...especially since it includes basically everything you would need...other than engine internals of course..
celicacobalt 03-03-2006, 03:52 PM yeah and the clutch upgrade for the manuals
Red2.4SS 03-05-2006, 02:25 PM If you build your own turbo kit as I am doing you could have a complete kit for less than $2500 and use the extra $1500 you'd save for other upgrades (clutch, motor mounts, etc.)
celicacobalt 03-06-2006, 11:48 AM well when you are done post some pics and a write up on how to do it then we can try it
lil_kano 03-07-2006, 11:59 PM i think ima get da garrett turbo kit. but whats the realease date?
celicacobalt 03-08-2006, 11:42 AM i think it will be releases late spring/early summer fi they wanna get their sales
kush421 04-03-2006, 08:22 AM since the Cobalt LT features a 2.2L engine it will be able to use this garret turbo kit too right?
Brian MP5T 04-03-2006, 09:30 AM As easy adn simple as it sounds to design and build your own, there is alot of room for trial and error. Design it stronger than it has to be. Use high wuality name brand components and you will reduce the chance of headaches..
riz906 04-04-2006, 12:59 AM theres a couple of peole around here who have that ... with nos of course.
its just the way that you modd the car diffrent set up s therse a couple options now
to do this . i ll let you know when iam there very soon.
So I dont mean to hijack this thred but after the comment from the gentlemen building his own kit for his 2.4... I am curious as to what is the hold up for us on these kits? I can do all of the fab work as I have done it before but I dont know anything about tuning. If I can get a turbo on this thing which wont be difficult (there is plenty of room) where would I go to get it tuned? I thoguht no one has built a kit cause the ecu could not be cracked.
JeRM82 04-16-2006, 12:15 PM I wonder if they might try and get it C.A.R.B approved for us california folks.....I know that they put out quality products, but I cant remember if thier VW kits are smog legal.....those are the only sport compact ones I know of...I know they have a Cummins kit of some kind...ANYWAYS.... I hope they decide to use a piggy back that we can reprogram at some point....I know that the SOHC honda guys have had ussues with Garrett's NEWER SOHC kits with the MOTOTRON piggy back because there hasnt been anyone who is able to make some kind of tuner to reprogram them......the older LINK style kits are the POO....you can reprogram the heck outa those......If anyone has any information or is thinking about e-mailing them try asking them about a C.A.R.B kit.... maybe if we get enough people asking we can get them to wonder if it would be worth all of the money they would have to pay to get the kit legal......its not just for cali people either.....think about the quality....california wont pass something thats a piece of crap.......hopefully they team up with EDELBROCK for this one....Edelbrock's new GSR turbo for hondas uses the disco potato too.....I guess we will have to wait and see...
davenportdesigns 04-20-2006, 01:43 AM so im hoping the 2.4 will be able to use this as well but we will have to see
no shit...i just hope that ANY good company comes out with a turbo for us
