Waterford Hills Track day 10/12/08

Waterford Hills had an open track day October th and i took my stock 2008 2.4 cobalt sport to its and my first open track day ever. Ive done some auto x before but never have i been on a true race track and let me say it was a ball. they ran 5 groups for 15 min sessions. My group was labeled no experience and i was paired with some interesting/fast cars including a HP mustang, a mazdaspeed miata, 08 porche 911.

The cobalt preformed falsely allowing me to pass the 500 hp mustang, as well as the mazdaspeed miata along with many other cars in my heat. i even had a few people track me down in the padox to ask if my cobalt was either turbocharged or supercharged they were surprised when it was only the 2.4 and a stock one at that.

I was going to go to this event, but my buddy couldn't make it, so we went the week before with the shelby club. There were 43 cars for the day, and no more than 15 cars on the track at a time. They wouldn't let us pass anywhere but the back straightaway. I got mine sideways between the esses, and when I say sideways, I mean facing the grass. It was my first track day, and now I am hooked.

Waterford hills rocks! Went to two this year. Broke the car both times. I never see other Cobalt's or Ion's out there from what I can remember. Maybe I will see some of you out next summer.

This is kind of a regional question but does anyone know of a road course around the Killeen or Austin TX area that's open to public? Cost? Race License required like some places? etc....

I am not surprised at how well the 2.4L holds up on a track, i was watching about a year ago on SpeedTV a stock class circuit race and one driver had a 2.4L Cobalt, the rest were Mazda 3's,VW Jetta's, and i think some Ford Focuses, the Cobalt took that race, even put the damn car up on 2 wheels by accident lol he was lucky to recover from that one.

Down fall is the stock brakes = horrible...

I took my 2.4 to the track probably 3-4 sessions 10 mins each and the brakes are warped and were fading like crazy after one lap.

TC on order... 2.4 is now the girlfriends car. and sold my mustang.

at the end of one of the 15 min session the front brakes were at about 500 F, after a cool down lap, didn't warp or have the pedal go soft on me so I'm fine with them.

Toward the end of my last session, I started to experience some fade coming out of the back straight (I found my *****). But I was braking much harder, trying to get some more speed on the straight.

Open diff. But I had smoke pouring out of my inside wheel on more than one occasion. It's still fun.
