Anyone went from much more powerful RWD cars to the Cobalt??

I've had some fairly quick cars, a high 11 second LS1 FBody, a 569 rwhp Mustang, a stock GTO, a few 13 second fox bodies, and my '02 Z28 that runs low 12s.

I daily drive an '02 Elantra w/ 126k on the clock mainly because it gets great gas mileage, its quiet etc. I don't drive my Camaro much at all, it doesn't handle very well, I don't like the noise etc. As gay as this is, when I had a supercharged Mustang that made 569 rwhp, I didn't drive that much either. It was a blast when I did, but it was very loud, also didn't handle very well, and I couldn't really enjoy it all that much. I was nervous about taking it to the track and breaking it.

This is what brings me to getting a Cobalt, quick for a daily driver, handling/braking, MPG, warranty etc. I can't say I'm in love with the styling but I think a sedan in white looks 'mature' enough to not draw any ricer attention. I'm 32, I'm not into the ricer thing at all.

But I'm just worried about getting one of these things and then getting bored with it. Has anyone else made a similair transition and do you regret it? I DO think it would be a fun car as I've never had anything that handled very well, the best handling car I had was the GTO & thats still 3700 lbs. I think with a tune & 280 fwd it would be fun in a 3000 lb car, I could try my hand at autocrossing etc as well. I'm just afraid after 6 months I'll have buyer's remorse and regret I ever spent $22k on one one. Thoughts??

as far as the SS goes. My boy loves that ****....he especially loves it that he can beat on it going to and from work and still get good gas mileage

I had a 96 Impala SS that had about 350-400hp approx. before I bought the SS/SC. Its a nice dd, good mpg, good power, handles good but I do regret the FWD. I miss RWD. The balt handles better than the Impala ever could just cause weight. But I am at a point now, where I don't want to mod it anymore cause the fwd sucks. Right now I am thinking about the new Camaro to get back to RWD. The balt might be a good scca car. I don't know, I just think the FWD limits the car.

I went from a slower 01 Camaro V6 5 speed to a Cobalt SS and haven't looked back.

In my opnion the Cobalt SS is a great daily driver!!! I agree if it was rwd drive it would be orgasmic. Its quick, handles well, afordable, decent on gas, and pretty safe. I agree it doesn't look the best but what looks good these days??? I would prefer a GTO but it would end up be more expensive in the long run. I like the new Camaro, on the base side(which has a lot of standard options) which is still afordible however they will be hard to get for a while and they are heavy 3700 lb and get poor fuel economy.

Affordible cars haven't had style since the 60s.
That is why my fun car is a 1970 chevelle that I will drive on the nice days in the summer.

Went from a 88 Fiero GT to the SS/SC. I know, I know, the Fiero was never very powerful, but it was still rwd. The switch to fwd did take a little time to get adjusted to.

I have a 10 second mustang and a new cobalt. With the power output of your previous cars id say you would get bored with any car thats making less then 400hp lol. The Cobalt is a great daily driver and its a blast to drive...but I could see in 6 months that you'd want more then just a tune.

If you have the money to dump into the car id say go for it. With a tune, exhaust, clutch, tires, and possibly a bigger turbo it might fit what you want. You could buy a beat up fox/lt1/ls1 car as your toy and have the cobalt as the nice daily car???

I went the opposite direction. I went from a fast SS/SC to a 425hp/445tq GTO, then to a 510hp/660tq Mustang.

I'm not going back, but I miss the MPG(28 average vs.my current 20 average), and that's about it. For the same payment and insurance why not drive something that wakes the neighbors and scares other people?

well I still have an f-body and all I can say is the Balt handles real nice unlike the rail I am used too... But 600 RWHP will probably make almost any car nuts.

Damn those SS/SC cars sure got some great mileage!!!! It seems like the Stage 2 people get better milage than the stock ones. Hopefully the stages TCs will improve on fuel economy.

Ive had more than a few F-bodies that way exceed the bolt on stage I had my SS/SC for 3.5 years and 87K miles as a daily driver/winter beater before it got wrecked in august . I never regretted one bit buying and I never got bored with it . For the money , and especially so for the 08-09's , more so than the SC version , aaaand if u can understand its a Chevy compact car and not a BMW where the interior is concerned , you get a pretty rounded car thats fun drive everyday and will get out of its own way I woulda replaced my wrecked 05 with a new 09 in a heartbeat but the circumstances of the accident are gonna keep out of a new car for a couple years ( dont ask )

I wouldnt say Id exactly want a SS as my only car , but its a great compliment if u already have sum better toys to play
with If I was in ur shoes and was looking for a only car that was more on the "mature" side , Im sure theres some deals to be had on a G8 GT both new and used . Ive seen some pretty impressive gains with these things with some very minor mods . It really sucks GM chose not to offer the 6-speed manual with the L76 engine though ...damn dod .

I sold my 03 Elantra as my daily driver to get my ss/tc, it's definately a big step up but i haven't lost much MPG and the ride offers alot of thrills over the Elantra. It's also really stable on the road and easy to drive which make it the ultimate daily driver.

Sounds like we are in the same boat right now, Kenny. I am seriously considering a white sedan for the exact reasons you mentioned. I'm not sure if I qualify as "mature" even though I am 71.

I've got a Mazda Miata for handling the twisties and a GTO that runs mid-elevens at the track. It seems to me that the SS/TC would be a good gap vehicle to combine some of the fun aspects from both of my current cars...even more so if GM really offers a Stage 1 kit that will raise HP to 315.

I don't street race; and the GTO has reached the limits for the track. I can't make it quicker without installing a roll bar; and I'm not willing to hack up the insides to do that. I see no sense in adding other mods that will get me kicked off the track after the first pass under 11.5 seconds.

I know I could enjoy the Cobalt for awhile; but, like you, I worry that the honeymoon might not last more than a few months.

500+ rwhp Camaro owner here. Got the 'balt for my DD. Very happy with the decision. So far, I've tuned it and added a K&N drop-in. Now this thing traps faster than my first LS1 Camaro ever did and has traction issues in 2nd.

I say go for it. Just make sure you get what you want/like in it. After all, you'll be spending the most time in this car if it's your DD.

Oh, and I'm turning 29 next month...
