Ok a 215-50-17 would be closer to the right size for you.

215-50-17 The 50 part means a taller tire right? 40 would mean a lower profile tire right?

yes.^215 is 215 mm and 50 means the sidewall height is 50 percent of the width of the tires if i'm not mistaken, then the 17 of course regards the rim height.

yes 215/45/17 will fit

by the tire size I'm guessing your friend has a Honda...thats really what that tire size is for (205/40/17)...really its too small and nothing special on your car. Not to mention it will leave you with a retarded wheel gap unless you slam the car.

If you want the wheels get them and grab some 215/45/17's...

I JUST bought a set of rims for my car used, they came with some bald 205/40s on here. This is how the car looks with them (sorry for quality, camera phone.)

Definitally want a slightly bigger tire to fill the wheel well a bit. Tirerack, along with a few other people already, have recommended a 215/45 for it. Not a bad place to start. I'm considering a 225/45 or something, I don't mind having a slightly taller tire to help with highway gearing and filling just that much more of the fender well.

Has anyone tried a 225 or 235 tread width tire on a 17x7 40mm offset rim on a Cobalt before? It should fit from the looks of it but it would be nice to know if someone else has ran it before. I'm used to rubbing from the 35s on my Jeep for a DD it would be nice to avoid it.
