Carbon fiber roof skin?

Has anyone done this. I'd think it would look kick ass on a car with a cf hood and trunk...

yeah it would look awesome. be ready for a lot of work. its almost like replacing the steel roof. biggest difference is you glue this one in instead of using a pro spot to put in spot welds like you would on a steal roof. if you ask me its overkill unless your racing and trying to save every possible pound. but if you have the money and want to do it, then do it.

i think he means just a cf overlay type thing not replacing the metal just having a cj mold and place it on the roof for the look

they look sick. unfortunately nobody makes one for the balt. They make several different styles for the 350z. It's just an overlay that mounts with some sweet epoxy. I think it'd be a good touch for the balt. Try to find a company that manufactures for the Z. Maybe with enough interest somebody would be willing to manufacture some.

eh seems kind of pointless to do an overlay..... yes easy but i mean fits not always going to be perfect also your just adding more weight to the car (if you care about it). it would definately be something kool to have though.

ok, we are talkin CF here. I wouldnt imagine a CF roof overlay would be very heavy. I could be wrong, but i'd say it's pretty light. As far as fitment goes, the ones for the 350z, as far as I've ever seen, none of them have ever been the least bit off. Could be done, and it would look sick.

well obviously its not going to be heavy.... im just saying an added weight on the roof + the stock roof for guys that are concerned about weight. me personally i would buy because its a daily driver and im not concerned about weight what so ever. im just extremely **** and it would have to be top notch and not wavy like almost all of these hoods you see these days.

I think it would look sick to just paint the roof of your car black (only work on colours other than black, looks best on silver though) Mercedes and other high end luxury vehicles have full glass roofs which look black and look good.

I would do the whole CF thing, but it would be for weight reasons only and it would be painted

Skinning the roof with cf is real cf. Only a fool would do fake vinyl cf on their roof. Skinning doesn't make it fake

For the roof, maybe an aluminum roof, make it a few pounds lighter.......making it a CF roof would take away the stability of the cars body, much like a convertible

But it doesn't make it lighter. Real carbon fiber is a lightweight metal wrapped with the fibers then baked. That's real carbon fiber. Saw them make it on prototype this.

LOL carbon fiber is a fabric. Either 2x2 twill or plain weave. Cf doesnt have any metal. CF also comes in different thickness.

How do you think they make cf hoods. It's fiberglass first then "skinned" with cf. I've never seen any baking done on cf. I've seen it bagged.

Ok. I remember. It's just baked to speed up the curing time. The cf fabric is coated with epoxy and hardener.

Still, I know its real carbon fiber but you are technically adding weight to your car by adding it on there. and the whole point of carbon fiber (the last time i checked) is to lighten up something while maintaining strength. carbon fiber overlay just seems like rice to me and is un-necassary unless you are really making the entire roof piece out of carbon fiber. I guess if you wanted to just go for looks you could do this, but its nothing meant to increase performance. plus, i think carbon fiber is kinda ugly. i only like it in small doses. having a cf hood is pushing it with me.

Carbon fibre isnt metal...its a "carbon fibre" impregrnated with resin/epoxy........wow cool how that works.

An overlay would be ghey and totally for looks. and yes would add a little weight, just total random ballpark of 9sq ft of roof, using 2mm carbon panel youre looking at like 6lbs or so.

A real carbon roof would get rid of weight up high which helps a lot, and I dont feel youd lose any noticeable rigidity, the roof panel isnt structural. The Time Attack car had a real carbon roof.............................................. ......................It cost $3500
