Frozen Struts on my SS/SC? or maybe lower control arm bushing?
Frozen Struts on my SS/SC? or maybe lower control arm bushing?
I am currently driving my 06 SS/SC this winter.....(i didnt want to,but dont worry i had her undercoated and a new set of steelys and winter treads)
Anyways, around January i noticed a kind of clunk noise in my front suspension when hitting abrubt bumps at speed and when driving slowly over deeper pots holes, in a rough gravel drive way for example.. The noises havent really gotten any worse but deffinitly hasnt gone away. It sounds very similar to having bad struts, but the car does not have the bounce when hitting bumps associated with bad struts. The car still handles great and is smoooth, it just makes a clunky noise when hitting bumps like having bad struts. I jacked the car up and inspected everything, struts, strut mounts, wheel bearings, ball jionts, sway bar links/bushings everything seems to be tihgt and in good working order exept posibly the large round bushing located at the rear of the lower control arm. This bushing had more play then the front bushing(which had little to no play when pryed on with a 16" bar) but the amount of play did not seem excessive it was just more then the front one. But due to the shape and design of that bushing it appears to me that it should have more play then the front bushing.
I was told to check these bushings by a GM tech but he didnt say how much play i should expect and in which bushing. The other thing i was told, not by a GM tech but an auto mechanic is that sometimes the gas and such inside the strut( especially in high pefromance cars) can freeze in cold weather. Which almost makes sence as if i start the car and allow it to warm up for 10, 15 minutes before driving the clunk is not as noticable, i noticed the same if the car is left inside a garage over night. The car is not subjected to extreme cold average temp for winter here between -15 and 0 degrees celcius.
Has anyone had a similar problem with there car? Any info greatly appreciated!
Thanks;
Jeff

ya mine was making the sound almost constantly and of course when i bring the car to my dealership i drop it off for an oil change get the tires rotated i tell them about it and i go for a ride with the tech and i try hitting all kinds of bumps and it doesnt make the noise....
ya i have this clunk, when its cold i can rock the steering back and forth and here it pop or clunk at both the front end. But once warm wont do it. Ive been taking bumps or driveways sideways now to avoid that annoying sound. Everything feels tight when i checked out the suspension. I could just replace the common culprits (sway bar endlinks / control arm bushings/ intermediate shaft) but dont want to spend more then i need. let me know if you find out anything.
there is also multiple TSB's out for front end clunk. find em
