Well since noone else answered this one, i guess i'll give you my opinion. If you know what you are doing, have the tools and the time, building a custom turbo kit could be cheaper and very rewarding.
But even with a great deal of knowlege, tools and info on the subject, piecing a kit together will be a pain in the ass, and will take alot of time, trial and error.
The best thing about purchasing a kit is that hahn and garret have already got past all of the crap for us, so all you need is a weekend, some tools, and the ability to follow directions.
I am personally putting my own kit together right now and it's kind of a pain, the car has been apart for over a month now and i have ran into several "issues" along the way, lol.. But when all is said and done, i think the outcome will be worth it, although, the way things have been going, i might end up spending as much as i would if i would have just bought the kit... So you decide...

Garret turbo kit is now $2500? Id go with that then if you dont want to spend the time puting it together yourself.

We all have lives.. But somehow a lot of us seem to figure it out.. If you want a good read on it.. Buy this book. I have a copy of it and the best thing is it gives a lot of numbers and step by step sizes a turbo for a 2.0L engine..

well thanks for all your help. and i could for sure have a weekend didicated to this turbo project or even 2 or 3. but for the total price, would the garrett full turbo kit be cheaper or the custom peice by peice build be cheaper?

this includes everything like installation, etc.

and take a look at this. could i tune this to fit a 2.2?

I dont think they make a ebay kit with a turbo manifold. For the price of another turbo you might as well by the garrett kit. No matter how you add up the money you will most likely spend that much anyways.

well what abotu about an ebay turbo kit in general? people are like no way thats from ebay man its ****. they heard that from a friends friend whos roomates sisters brother told them. talk to the people who actually put them in. but what if i got the garrett essintials kit and found everything else myself?

and all of those turbo kits on garrett turbo. can i hook up the kit thats $1999 because i can get my own tune the only difference between the 2499 and the 1999 one is the engine control unit. my dad says if i can hook up the 1999 one he will get it for me.

This is me personally I dont know about anyone else. If I had an older civic or something that I was fixing up for fun at the track then I think I could do a ebay turbo kit. On a daily driver cobalt I wouldnt trust anything other than namebrand. You cant afford to have something break on a daily driver.

I know a ebay turbo kit would work, I have seen them. The question is how long will it work. It might look good at first but after a while it could all just fall a part. Like this guy..

Ive seen that before. I have seen some turbo tiburons pushing 300+ hp using ebay turbos for a year. I have also heard of people starting their cars and the turbos blowing as soon as they hit boost. Its a hit or miss. Is it really worth it finding out? You can buy used turbos and intercoolers for cheap. Like I said me personally I wouldnt buy anything for my daily driver that people have bad reviews on. If you end up buying an ebay turbo kit I hope you do not run into any problems. I know it just sucks blowing money and everything going wrong.

Also the money spent on installing (cut/welding), tuning, replacing junk parts you might as well have paid for the good kit that you could probably do everything yourself in your driveway.

If your just looking for 40-60hp then i wouldnt bother spending 3000...

Are you going to install this yourself? If not, look for about another grand for installation...

I would say that the garret kit would be your best bet! Just keep in mind you get what you pay for.
