little lip under rad.. necessary..?

Hey guys,

So, I was wondering yesterday if the little lip coming off the rad necessary to be there? My friend ripped his off after he lowered his LS and it scraped alot.. I know it does something with cooling or something, but I don't know exactly how necessary it really is.. Any input?

Thanks!

I actually prefer it. It's like a warning for me.

pretty sure its suppose to direct air upwards in the direction of the factory h/e and radiator. correct me if i'm worng though. but i'm pretty sure thats why JBP made an aluminum one, so it wouldn't flex like the stock plastic one

I figured it was something like that because cars became "bottom breathers" and took air from under the car.. But on the SS, it has a big ass lower grille.. I figure quite a bit of air comes through there.. lol

did not know that. Good info.

I thought it was to warn us that we were about to actually scrap the bottom.

The correct way is the way it came from the factory.

Sounds like most of the people who took it off have other cooling apparati down there to catch the air. It SHOULD stay on the car unless there's something else compensating for it.

Mine didn't come with one. If I am not mistaken none of the 08-09 SS's did.

So it's simply a way of sending cool air to the radiator area then? That makes sense.. But then why wouldn't the new ones have anything..??

Guess that means no CAI, catback, header, tune, lowering..........God forbid someone should put a blower on a 2.4

j/k btw, I know you meant the chin deflector....and I think you are right. Stock 2.2 / 2.4 might get away without it but keep an eye on the coolant temp. Boosted car is going to need the extra airflow through the he to keep the charge temps down.

While moving I'm at 185-ish.. Sitting still, it can go to 220 before the fan comes on, but normally it doesn't go above 200 sitting for a few..

Yeah, because after dropping it, my floor jack always gets caught on it.. lol. So if that's all it's for, it's not helping me out too much anymore.. I know I've already hit the "you're too low" stage for the car.. lol.
