Turbo lag??????

I have the new 09 turbo ss. if you start of in 2nd gear around 3000 rpms its extremely slow, then once around 4-4500 rpms it puts you right back in your seat. any reason why the car seems to have this lag???

Yup. Even N/A the car wouldn't have power there. Take off higher in the rpm range.

lol i dont think he's talking about from a stop here. It certainly reads that way though. I think he just means steeping on it in 2nd gear at 3k

maybe i wasnt clear here! what im getting at is there seems to be a hesitation while accelerating. The car I had b4 was a 07 VW gti. when i sold the car is was stage 2, but even when the car was bone stock, there was no hesitation, or the sense of a lag. the car would build boost at about 1800 rpms and pull to redline. Now i know these are 2 different cars here, but still, the cobalt isnt a big turbo car, so the stock turbo, shouldnt hesitate at all. even in 2nd when i floor the car it builds boost right away, it just seems to almost kick and jerk then feeling the boost. the boost feels most noticeable when in the higher rpms rather than low. with these cars, we should feel boost all the way through..........Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problems?????

you know what i mean, Im just trying to make a point. its not that kinda of issue. there is just no easy way to explain it unless you drive it.....i guess. the way it feels is that there is no low end torque or power. There should be some sense or feel of my turbo. It is just totally different than, my previous cars, bmw 325i, 02 ford f150 harley supercharged, and my 07 vw gti. It has a drivability issue! the power just isnt there until 4200 rpms or so, and b4 that is feels sloppy. just imagine that while accelerating you let your foot off the gas a few times b4 you get to 4200 rpms and then hold it there. that is kinda of what it feels like.

That hesitation happened on my car, but it was because I had the BPV upgrade spring in. When I uninstalled it, it went away.

What mods do you have on your car? How many miles? There's a possibility that you're still experiencing "break-in" that many of us encountered that was similar to what you describe.

My car lags really bad in 2nd gear if I'm trying to punch it at like 1000 rpm. Once it gets to 2 grand it starts to pull like hell. That's where you need to know your gears. Just takes time. This car was a little bit difficult for me to get used to as far as clutch and gearing.

Your still in it's break in period I believe. It will limit torque ad power until a certain mileage. IDK excatly what it is, I think 2500.

Its not like im racing there, its kinda of like everyday driving around town. when I run the car hard is runs better, but when i shift it hesitates a little. are you starting to understand where i am coming from????? Im sorry to be so vague, I just cant seem to explain it so you will understand.

I do thankyou for all your help!

I think there are 3 factors to look at for "lag."

1. There is SOME turbo lag in this car, depends on RPMS mainly...

2. Variable Valve timing, I believe the LNF still utilizes this, although I don't know at which point it switches from economy to power, whether RPM or oil pressure based...either way that will affect the power and make it feel laggy.

3. Torque Management - I believe there is torque management in first and second gear, if you're flooring it at 3000, it may be limiting your torque to alleviate wheelspin, and letting it free aroun 4000 rpm.

These are only my guesses based on other cars. I'm not 100% sure how the engine is tuned on this car as far as those specifics.

My workaround was a slighty slower gas pedal push. When I gunned it suddenly, it would do that, but if I greased it on a tad slower, the turbo spooled and off I went. This was when I had the spring though and some during the break-in period. The only thing I could have thought it could have been was that if you did it suddenly at low RPM, then the engine was expecting more airflow from the turbo that didn't spool quite yet due do the low RPM and went into an overly rich state until the turbo caught up and then it was fine again.

This may be a break-in thing though. Many of us experienced "break-in". One day it seemed like it had less power and the next day it was fine again, and then maybe something like what you described would happen for a few key cycles/miles/days, and then it would go away again. There's a point where it stops though, and that's what we're not quite sure of; where it is.

One thing I might suggest is resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a while. It will then begin learning from a blank slate again and may clear what's going on if it's ECU related.

At 3000rpm in 2nd gear you should have instant spool, i'd tighten your hose clamps and check for any loose vacuum hoses.
