Starting Crazy Project Race/Daily Driver
Thought I would post for you fellow sports car enthusiasts..my project build and document along the way, probably evolving into a website(non-commercial)..my plans to build an 06 Cobalt SS/SC into a variety car. 45+mpg daily driver(dd), land speed, 1/4 mile, time attack, scca/nasa competitive contender..ALL ON A BUDGET. Probably some mods you guys/gals have not thought of, but can afford and actually do.
Plans....weigh and dyno base-line of car that I am starting with.
update purchases and progress along the way.
post updates with new weights and dynos and race results along with mpg d.d.
Goals. 45+mpg daily driver
175 Land Speed Texas Mile, NC maybe some salt.
11.5 sec 1/4 mile
245 hp/2327 lbs(fits a NASA category) may exceed for events.
My background: Mediocre, OLDER, car/bike/truck builder(as a hobby). Fulltime search and rescue law enforcement type. Part time pro-race team crew, spare time wrench turner. I have crewed or spectated at the following tracks/events: Road Atlanta, Long Beach, Bahrain, Gainesville Drag Strip, Indy, St. Pete, Miami, Detroit.and a few I am too old to remember.
Base car: I HAVENT EVEN SEEN THE CAR I BOUGHT YET, F&^%$NG EBAY is an addiction...06 cobalt ss/sc, If you see the mods that I saw from the pictures in my vbgarage, I think I am starting with a Stage II. Opinions?
I posted a few pics of my team experience and the base car.
Over all plans include WEIGHT REDUCTION, the car weights what, 2850 new?, Stage II is 230-245 hp?..but will verify with my baseline measure of both.
Lots of Carbon Fiber/fiberglass/lexan/polycarbonite/titanium..all on a BUDGET! You just have to know where to look. Yes I will post all the details of my finds, sources and techniques.
Major eventual mods will probably be 6 speed tranny, lower geared transaxle, quite a few body mods.
1st Step...GO GET THE FRIGGIN CAR! lol...lower it, re route some intake air and close up some other intake holes, lose weight, belly pan, ect..
I am gone a lot for work, so I wont have a lot of time to post replies, but I will post my progress and eventually get this to a site. Thanks for looking!

I officially call BS. If you want 11.5 1/4 times with 245 HP.......you better reduce that weight another 1000lbs!
That sounded mean. Was not meant that way.....I just don't see it happening. If it does I'll drive my TC off a cliff!

I might have to work towards that extra 1000 lb weight loss just to see the TC go over a cliff!!!....Just kidding, any fast cobalt ss is friend vice foe. yea I might have lofty goals. Dont think I can get below 2200 lbs though and still have suspension. But, we shall see, the plasma and the cutting wheel are DYING to masacre the balt's *****. he hehe, that sounds cool, balt's *****.
Quaife has a 6 speed conversion kit available. It keeps your stock housing and replaces the internals. It's $$ though, most people don't find the price worth it.
As far as you goals. It would be much easier for you to go for higher power than that much weight reduction.

This is a really nice animation on the water flow of the EcoTec with InterCooler

Why flame him? That makes no sense. Let him figure out on his own what is and is not a feasible goal. I bet none of this is set in stone and his goals will change over time with his build.

sounds better than a 14..whatever.
and to the rbc..you are correct my friend, all goals are estimates and i get what i get. 1/4 mile time was lofty goal, but i have run plenty different machines down the track, have an idea what it takes. remember what horsepower is folks, distance weight time.
my biggest focus will be the weight/hp ratio due to NASA class rules...so we'll see how the aero mods go...also failry interested in the land speed gig, just gotta bite the bullet for the safety mods(roll cage, sealsunroof, fire sx), more weight, blast.
great feedback.
promise to keep ya posted regardless of the comments.
