my shifter on the LS is realllll nice but please if anyone knows how to remove the shifter to replace for an aftermarket one, do tell. i noticed the boot slides off from the shifter but it doesnt seem to budge on coming off....much thanks appreciated.

check for a pin in the side of the handle. If there is no pin try to spin it off. These are the typical installs of shift knobs for GM

no they got 4 pins overlapping the stick. i dont know if i bend them outward or what, i do not want to break any so i didnt bother to try until someone let me know on if they knew. that would be kinda hard to pull all four pins and try screwing it off...prettty damn weird. ill have to check it out tomorrow.

i take it its an Auto? If so any give when u try to jerk up on the knob? the cavaliers and Grand Prixs (Automatics) all had a pin on the lower front side of the knob. I can now say I've never seen that set up.

I would have to look at mine.... But from what I know about stuff like this.... Some times there is a grub screw and you need an allen key to loosen it up, and the knob comes off.. Or you can just unscrew the knob off!....

Have you figured out how to take the shifter knob off yet?? I am thinking of changing mine too on my LS 5 speed. What knob are you planning to replace on your Cobalt. Any pics??

I just bought a 2006 Cobalt LS and I would like to remove the shift knob. Has anyone figured out how to do this that does not involve me drilling the knob out. Let me know

If it is anything similar to the Ion you'll have to pull the top of the knob off and drill down until you see a screw...a friend of mine showed me what he had to do to his and I'm not sure I'm all about doing that :lol:. This might not be the case on the Cobalt (I haven't really tried too hard on my LS 'cause I'm leaving it for now) so don't start drilling away because of me :-D.

This is some crap. I do not want to drill - its a lease. I think if I just push down on the boot it should show the connection point. Has anyone tried this to see if it removes. If so what do I replace it will since I dont think there is a screw to attach a new knob. :lol:

i found out already how to remove it. u simply pull the boot down and you will see these plastic prongs attached to the stick, just bend those outward just a little bit, not to much or it will break off and yank the shifter right off, the shifter is actually really light and feels cheesy and cheap when its off. no offense.

If it's that easy maybe I can look into ordering the short shift that is in the SS and make the modifications myself rather than paying for labour. My biggest fear was having to replace the boot after I payed for the leather as part of the sports package, but it look like I might be able to keep it after all. Anyone have thoughts on this?

And thanks for the help yellow balt...I'm sure a number of us want to change the shifter in one way or another on our coupes. I'd considered going with a short shifter and leaving the knob as is but I don't think it would feel right especially considering the SS version shortens the shifts by something like 4 inches.

I'm not sure if these are direct bolt-ons or not, but these are the only knobs I've found thus far for the Cobalts.

If I find any more I'll let you know...maybe someone here has more part numbers somewhere, do a search for "short shifters" and see if anything turns up that way. For now I think we're almost stuck with the one that came with the car which I happen to like but I'm sure a lot of people don't :).

I got an email from TWM about the shift knobs for a Cobalt Coupe LS. there are no aftermarket knobs made due to the funny way GM hooked it up. However in order to change the knob it looks like you have to change to a short throw in order to pick a knob that works for the style. Sucks I know :mad: but that is the sorry
